Abstract

A method and apparatus for measurement reporting and event-triggered periodic measurement reporting in an evolved universal terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN) are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) monitors cell-specific reference signals from a serving cell and neighbor cells to detect a reporting event defined for the E-UTRAN. Once a reporting event is detected, the WTRU sends a measurement report to the network. The measurement quantity may be a reference signal received quality (RSRQ). After detection of the reporting event, the WTRU may send event-triggered measurement reports periodically. The WTRU may send a scheduling request to the network for the event-triggered periodic measurement reports. The WTRU may send a termination indication if the event-triggered periodic measurement reports are terminated before a configured number of times. The WTRU may send an extension request if a specified number of periodic reporting has been sent but more reports still need to be sent.

Claims

1. A method of measurement reporting for supporting wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) mobility in an evolved universal terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN), the method comprising:

monitoring cell-specific reference signals from a serving cell and a neighbor cell;

detecting a reporting event defined for the E-UTRAN; and

sending a measurement report upon detection of the reporting event.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the reporting event is at least one of a measurement quantity on a non-serving cell becomes better than a measurement quantity on a serving cell by a pre-configured margin;

a best neighbor cell is measured above a serving cell threshold by a pre-defined margin;

a measurement quantity on the serving cell becomes better than an absolute threshold;

a measurement quantity on the serving cell becomes worse than the absolute threshold; and

a measurement quantity of all intra-frequency neighbor cells is below a neighbor cell threshold and a measurement quantity on the serving cell is below the serving cell threshold.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the measurement quantity is a reference signal received quality (RSRQ).

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the reporting event is at least one of an estimated quality of a currently used frequency is below a first threshold and an estimated quality of a non-used frequency is above a second threshold;

and a neighbor cell measurement quantity in an unused frequency band is the best among its peers and is above a third threshold.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the reporting event is that an estimated quality of a currently used frequency is below a first threshold and an estimated quality of the other system is above a second threshold.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein a hysteresis and a timer is applied to trigger measurement and send the measurement report.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the measurement report includes reference signal received quality (RSRQ) measurements on an unused frequency band on a measurement cell set and total received wideband power from all sources on the unused frequency band.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein RSRQ measurements on the measurement cell set are summed for evaluating a quality of the unused frequency band.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

sending event-triggered periodic measurement reports periodically.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising:

sending a scheduling request for the event-triggered periodic measurement reports; and

receiving a resource allocation, wherein the event-triggered periodic measurement reports are sent using the received resource allocation.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the scheduling request includes a needed amount of resources and number of reports that need to be sent.

12. The method of claim 9 further comprising:

sending a termination indication if the event-triggered periodic measurement reports are terminated before a configured number of times.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the event-triggered periodic measurement reports are terminated if there is no cell that satisfies a reporting criteria, if a candidate set has been updated, or if a maximum number of measurement reports have been sent.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the termination indication is sent along with a last measurement report.

15. The method of claim 9 further comprising:

sending an extension request if a specified number of periodic reporting has been sent but more reports still need to be sent.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein a new number of reports that need to be sent is indicated in the extension request.

17. The method of claim 9 wherein the scheduling request requests resources for all events triggered.

18. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) configured to perform measurement reporting for supporting WTRU mobility in an evolved universal terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN), the WTRU comprising:

a measurement unit adapted to measure a measurement quantity on cell-specific reference signals from a serving cell and a neighbor cell; and

a controller adapted to detect a reporting event defined for the E-UTRAN and send a measurement report upon detection of the reporting event.

19. The WTRU of claim 18 wherein the reporting event is at least one of a measurement quantity on a non-serving cell becomes better than a measurement quantity on a serving cell by a pre-configured margin;

a best neighbor cell is measured above a serving cell threshold by a pre-defined margin;

a measurement quantity on the serving cell becomes better than an absolute threshold;

that a measurement quantity on the serving cell becomes worse than the absolute threshold; and

a measurement quantity of all intra-frequency neighbor cells is below a neighbor cell threshold and a measurement quantity on the serving cell is below the serving cell threshold.

20. The WTRU of claim 19 wherein the measurement quantity is a reference signal received quality (RSRQ).

The WTRU of claim 18 wherein the reporting event is at least one of an estimated quality of a currently used frequency is below a first threshold and an estimated quality of a non-used frequency is above a second threshold, and neighbor cell measurement quantity in an unused frequency band is best among its peers and is above a third threshold.

22. The WTRU of claim 18 wherein the reporting event is that an estimated quality of a currently used frequency is below a first threshold and an estimated quality of the other system is above a second threshold.

23. The WTRU of claim 18 wherein the controller applies at least one of a hysteresis and a timer to trigger measurement and send the measurement report.

24. The WTRU of claim 18 wherein the measurement unit measures reference signal received quality (RSRQ) measurements on an unused frequency band on a measurement cell set and total received wideband power from all sources on the unused frequency band, and the controller includes the RSRQ measurements and the total received wideband power in the measurement report.

25. The WTRU of claim 24 wherein RSRQ measurements on the measurement cell set are summed for evaluating a quality of the unused frequency band.

26. The WTRU of claim 18 wherein the controller is adapted to send event-triggered periodic measurement reports periodically.

27. The WTRU of claim 26 wherein the controller is adapted to send a scheduling request for the event-triggered periodic measurement reports and receive a resource allocation, wherein the event-triggered periodic measurement reports are sent using the received resource allocation.

28. The WTRU of claim 27 wherein the scheduling request includes a needed amount of resources and number of reports that need to be sent.

29. The WTRU of claim 26 wherein the controller is adapted to send a termination indication if the event-triggered periodic measurement reports are terminated before configured number of times.

30. The WTRU of claim 29 wherein the event-triggered periodic measurement reports are terminated if there is no cell that satisfies reporting criteria, if a candidate set has been updated, or if a maximum number of measurement reports have been sent.

31. The WTRU of claim 29 wherein the termination indication is sent along with a last measurement report.

32. The WTRU of claim 26 wherein the controller is adapted to send an extension request if a specified number of periodic reporting has been sent but more reports still need to be sent.

33. The WTRU of claim 32 wherein a new number of reports that need to be sent is indicated in the extension request.

34. The WTRU of claim 26 wherein the scheduling request requests resources for all events triggered.
