Distal wire stop having adjustable handle
First Claim
1. An elongate engagement member for use with an elongate medical device comprising a tubular member having a coupling region configured to couple with a wire guide, the coupling region being disposed near a distal end of the tubular member, the elongate engagement member comprising:
- an elongate shaft having a distal end configured to frictionally engage an exterior surface of the wire guide and an inner wall of a passageway within the tubular member; and
a handle assembly adjustably connected to a proximal portion of the elongate shaft, the handle assembly comprising a hub connector configured for engagement with a proximal port of the elongate medical device, the handle assembly further comprising a handle portion movably connected to the hub connector, wherein the elongate engagement member is configured to engage and releasably secure a wire guide coupled with the elongate medical device and prevent relative movement between the wire guide and the elongate medical device; and
wherein movement of the handle portion relative to the hub connector is configured to cause relative longitudinal movement between the elongate shaft and the elongate medical device.

Abstract
A method and apparatus for releasably securing a wire guide to an elongate medical device for introduction into a work site with the bodily lumen of a patient. An elongate engagement member is configured to engage the wire guide while it is coupled to the elongate medical device and is configured so as to prevent relative movement between the wire guide and the elongate medical device. The elongate engagement member includes an adjustable handle assembly for adjusting the relative position of the distal end of the elongate engagement member relative to the elongate medical device.

12. A system for introducing multiple medical devices into a work site within a bodily lumen of a patient comprising:
-
an elongate medical device comprising a tubular shaft extending between a distal end and a proximal end, a lumen extending through at least a portion of the tubular shaft, the lumen comprising a coupling region extending between a distal opening and a proximal opening; a wire guide comprising a shaft extending between a distal end and a proximal end, the shaft configure to slidably extend through the lumen of the elongate medical device; and an elongate engagement member comprising a distal end configured to frictionally engage the shaft of the wire guide and the lumen of the elongate medical device, the elongate engagement member further comprising an adjustable handle assembly for connecting to the elongate medical device, wherein the wire guide is movable from a coupled position to an uncoupled position, the wire guide extending through the coupling region of the elongated medical device when in the coupled position, the wire guide not extending through the coupling region of the elongated medical device when in the uncoupled position, wherein the elongate engagement member is configured to engage and releasably secure the wire guide in the coupled position and prevent relative movement between the wire guide and the elongate medical device, and wherein the adjustable handle assembly is configured to adjust the longitudinal position of the distal end of the elongate engagement member relative to the elongate medical device. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16, 17)

18. A method of introducing multiple medical devices into a work site within a bodily lumen of a patient, comprising the steps of:
-
a) providing an elongate medical device comprising a tubular shaft having a distal portion, a proximal portion, and a lumen extending therethrough, the distal portion comprising a coupling region; b) providing a wire guide comprising a wire guide shaft extending between a distal end and a proximal end; c) providing an elongate engagement member having a distal end portion and proximal end portion, the proximal end portion being attached to an adjustable handle assembly; d) releasably coupling the wire guide to the elongate medical device by engaging the wire guide with the coupling region of the elongate medical device; e) advancing the elongate engagement member through the lumen of the elongate medical device and engaging the handle assembly with a proximal port of the elongate medical device; f) adjusting the handle assembly to advance the distal end portion of the elongate engagement member into engagement with wire guide so as to releasably secure the wire guide in the coupled position and prevent relative movement between the wire guide and the elongate medical device; g) advancing the elongate medical device, the wire guide, and the elongate engagement member to the work site. - View Dependent Claims (19, 20)
