Abstract

A surgical staple including a deformable member and a crown, where the deformable member can slide relative to the crown. In at least one embodiment, a staple cartridge can include a cavity and a deck, where the cavity can be configured to receive at least a portion of the deformable member and the crown can be positioned within an opening in the deck. In various embodiments, when soft tissue is captured between an anvil and the staple cartridge, the crown can apply a compressive force or pressure to the soft tissue even before the deformable member is deployed toward the anvil.

Claims

1. A surgical staple, comprising:

a base;

a deformable member extending from said base; and

a crown, wherein said deformable member is slidable relative to said crown.

2. The surgical staple of claim 1, wherein said crown includes an aperture, and wherein said deformable member is slidable relative to said crown within said aperture.

3. The surgical staple of claim 2, wherein said aperture defines an axis, and wherein said deformable member is slidable along said axis.

4. The surgical staple of claim 1, wherein said crown includes a recess, and wherein said recess is configured to receive said base.

5. The surgical staple of claim 1, further comprising a second deformable member extending from said base, wherein said second deformable member is slidable relative to said crown.

6. The surgical staple of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of said crown is comprised of a bioabsorbable material.

7. The surgical staple of claim 6, wherein said crown is further comprised of a therapeutic drug, and wherein the absorption of said bioabsorbable material releases said therapeutic drug.

8. The surgical staple of claim 1, wherein said crown includes a tissue-contacting surface having a first width, wherein said base has a second width, and wherein said first width is larger than said second width.

9. A staple cartridge for removably storing a surgical staple, the surgical staple including a base, a deformable member extending from the base, and a crown, the staple cartridge comprising:

a deck having a top surface;

a cavity configured to receive the deformable member, said cavity having an opening in said deck;

a recess in said deck configured to receive the crown; and

a driver configured to move the base and the deformable member relative to the crown.

10. The staple cartridge of claim 9, wherein the crown is removably attached to said deck.

11. The staple cartridge of claim 10, wherein the crown is integrally molded with said deck, and wherein said driver is configured to force the base of the staple against the crown and dislodge the crown from said deck.

12. The staple cartridge of claim 11, wherein the crown includes a recess configured to receive the base, and wherein said driver is configured to position the base within said recess.

13. The staple cartridge of claim 9, wherein the crown is press-fit within said recess.

14. The staple cartridge of claim 9, wherein the crown includes a top surface which is positioned below said top surface of said deck when the crown is positioned within said recess.

15. An assembly, comprising:

a surgical staple comprising;

a base;

a deformable member extending from said base; and

a crown, wherein said deformable member is slidable relative to said crown; and

a staple cartridge configured to removably store said surgical staple, said staple cartridge comprising;

a deck having a top surface;

a cavity configured to receive said deformable member, said cavity having an opening in said deck;

a recess in said deck configured to receive said crown; and

a driver configured to move said base and said deformable member relative to said crown.

16. The assembly of claim 15, wherein said crown is removably attached to said deck.

17. The assembly of claim 16, wherein said crown is integrally molded with said deck, and wherein said driver is configured to force said base of said staple against said crown and dislodge said crown from said deck.

18. The assembly of claim 15, wherein said crown includes a recess configured to receive said base, and wherein said driver is configured to position said base within said recess.

19. The assembly of claim 15, wherein said crown is press-fit within said recess.

20. The assembly of claim 15, wherein said crown includes a top surface which is positioned below said top surface of said staple cartridge when said crown is positioned within said recess.
