Abstract

A surgical staple including a deformable member and a crown, where the deformable member can slide relative to the crown. In various embodiments, a staple cartridge can include a cavity and a deck, where the cavity can be configured to receive at least a portion of the deformable member and the crown can be positioned within an opening in the deck. In one various embodiment, the crowns of two or more adjacent surgical staples can be connected. In various embodiments, the connected crowns can apply a uniform pressure to soft tissue and increase the stiffness of the soft tissue after the surgical staples have been deployed therein.

Claims

1. A surgical staple assembly, comprising:

a first staple, comprising;

a first base;

a first deformable member extending from said first base; and

a first crown, wherein said first deformable member is slidable relative to said first crown; and

a second staple, comprising;

a second base;

a second deformable member extending from said second base; and

a second crown, wherein said second deformable member is slidable relative to said second crown, and wherein said first crown is connected to said second crown.

2. The surgical staple assembly of claim 1, wherein said first crown includes an aperture, and wherein said first deformable member is slidable relative to said first crown within said aperture.

3. The surgical staple assembly of claim 2, wherein said aperture defines an axis, and wherein said first deformable member is slidable along said axis.

4. The surgical staple assembly of claim 1, wherein said first crown includes a recess, and wherein said recess is configured to receive said first base.

5. The surgical staple assembly of claim 1, wherein said first crown is connected to said second crown by a bridge, and wherein said bridge is comprised of a bioabsorbable material.

6. The surgical staple assembly of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of said first crown is comprised of a bioabsorbable material.

7. The surgical staple assembly of claim 6, wherein said first crown is further comprised of a therapeutic drug, and wherein the absorption of said bioabsorbable material releases said therapeutic drug.

8. The surgical staple assembly of claim 1, wherein said first crown includes a tissue-contacting surface having a first width, wherein said first base has a second width, and wherein said first width is larger than said second width.

9. A staple cartridge for removably storing a first surgical staple and a second surgical staple, each surgical staple including a base, a deformable member extending from the base, and a crown, the staple cartridge comprising:

a deck having a top surface;

a first cavity configured to receive the deformable member of the first staple, said first cavity having an opening in said deck;

a first recess in said deck configured to receive the crown of the first staple;

a first driver configured to move the base and the deformable member of the first staple relative to the crown of the first staple;

a second cavity configured to receive the deformable member of the second staple, said second cavity having an opening in said deck;

a second recess in said deck configured to receive the crown of the second staple;

a second driver configured to move the base and the deformable member of the second staple relative to the crown of the second staple; and

an intermediate recess in said deck configured to receive a bridge connecting the crown of the first staple and the crown of the second staple.

10. The staple cartridge of claim 9, wherein the crown of the first staple is removably attached to said deck.

11. The staple cartridge of claim 10, wherein the crown of the first staple is integrally molded with said deck, and wherein said first driver is configured to force the base of the first staple against the crown of the first staple and dislodge the crown of the first staple from said deck.

12. The staple cartridge of claim 11, wherein the crown of the first staple includes a recess configured to receive the base of the first staple, and wherein said first driver is configured to position the base of the first staple within the recess of the first staple.

13. The staple cartridge of claim 9, wherein the crown of the first staple is press-fit within said first recess.

14. The staple cartridge of claim 9, wherein the crown of the first staple includes a top surface which is positioned below said top surface of said deck when the crown of the first staple is positioned within said first recess.

15. An assembly, comprising:

a first surgical staple comprising;

a first base;

a first deformable member extending from said first base; and

a first crown, wherein said first deformable member is slidable relative to said first crown;

a second surgical staple comprising;

a second deformable member; and

a second crown;

a bridge connecting said first crown and said second crown; and

a staple cartridge configured to removably store said first surgical staple and said second surgical staple, said staple cartridge comprising;

a deck having a top surface;

a first cavity configured to receive said first deformable member, said first cavity having an opening in said deck;

a first recess in said deck configured to receive said first crown;

a first driver configured to move said first base and said first deformable member relative to said first crown; and

an intermediate recess in said deck configured to receive said bridge.

16. The assembly of claim 15, wherein said first crown is removably attached to said deck.

17. The assembly of claim 16, wherein said first crown is integrally molded with said deck, and wherein said first driver is configured to force said first base of said first staple against said first crown and dislodge said first crown from said deck.

18. The assembly of claim 15, wherein said first crown includes a recess configured to receive said first base, and wherein said first driver is configured to position said first base within said recess of said first crown.

19. The assembly of claim 15, wherein said first crown is press-fit within said first recess.

20. The assembly of claim 15, wherein said first crown includes a top surface which is positioned below said top surface of said deck when said first crown is positioned within said first recess.
