Abstract

Selectively applying graphical filtering to a portion of an object. One method described herein includes a method including accessing an object to be rendered. At least one characteristic of a portion of the object is determined. A filter is selected that has been pre-specified for the at least one determined characteristic. The filter is applied to the portion of the object, while not applying the filter to at least one other portion of the object.

Claims

1. In a computing environment, a method of selectively applying graphical filtering to a portion of an object,

a) accessing an object to be rendered;

b) determining at least one characteristic of a portion of the object;

c) selecting a filter that has been pre-specified for the at least one determined characteristic; and

d) applying the filter to the portion of the object, while not applying the filter to at least one other portion of the object.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the object is a character.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying the portion of an object to determine characteristics of the portion of the object.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein identifying the portion of an object comprises identifying features of the object.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein identifying features comprises identifying a typographical entity.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein identifying features comprises identifying at least one of a geometrical entity or characteristic.

7. The method of claim 4, wherein identifying features comprises identifying a relation between entities.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the relation defines a distance between strokes.

9. The method of claim 3, wherein identifying the portion of an object comprises receiving a user selection defining the portion of the object.

10. The method of claim 3, wherein identifying the portion of an object comprises identifying a zone of the object.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein filters are pre-selected by human determination.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein filters are pre-specified in a filter hinting language.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein filters within a hinting language are specified by human interaction

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising repeating acts b through d for other characteristics before displaying the object to a user.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the filters include parameters directed to models of human visual perception.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein the filters include parameters directed to human recognition specific to a class of objects being considered.

17. In a computing environment, a computer readable medium comprising computer executable instructions that when executed by a processor cause the following to be performed:

a) accessing an object to be rendered;

b) determining at least one characteristic of a portion of the object;

c) selecting a filter that has been pre-specified for the at least one determined characteristic; and

d) applying the filter to the portion of the object, while not applying the filter to at least one other portion of the object.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 17, wherein the object is a character.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 17, further comprising identifying the portion of an object to determine characteristics of the portion of the object.

20. A computing system comprising:

a processor;

a memory coupled to the processor, wherein the memory comprises computer executable instructions that when executed by the processor cause the following to be performed;

a) accessing an object to be rendered;

b) determining at least one characteristic of a portion of the object;

c) selecting a filter that has been pre-specified for the at least one determined characteristic; and

d) applying the filter to the portion of the object, while not applying the filter to at least one other portion of the object.
