Abstract

Methods and apparatus for resource provisioning and planning in a communication network. In an aspect, a method includes generating resource entities that represent resource requirements of targeted services, wherein the resource entities are modeled from at least one of transport network (TN) dependent information and TN independent information, and determining whether the resource entities can be supported by one or more transport networks. An apparatus includes input logic to receive at least one of TN dependent information and TN independent information, and processing logic to generate resource entities that represent resource requirements of targeted services, wherein the resource entities are modeled from at least one of the TN dependent information and the TN independent information, and to determine whether the resource entities can be supported by one or more transport networks.

Claims

1. A method for resource planning in a communication network, the method comprising:

generating one or more resource entities that represent resource requirements of one or more targeted services, respectively, wherein the resource entities are modeled from at least one of transport network dependent information and transport network independent information; and

determining whether the one or more resource entities can be supported by one or more transport networks.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said generating comprises using a transport network protocol stack overhead to convert between application layer quality of service requirements associated with the one or more targeted services and usage requirements associated with the one or more transport networks.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said generating comprises using a statistical model to estimate aggregated traffic characteristics of variable bit-rate traffic associated with a selected targeted service to generate an associated resource entity.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

assigning priorities to the one or more resource entities; and

determining whether each resource entity can be supported by the one or more transport networks based on its respective priority.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining an amount of resource associated with the one or more transport networks that can be used for non real-time traffic.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein said determining comprises scheduling at least a portion of the one or more resource entities based on a recurring template.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating a service association that assigns the one or more resource entities to carry the one or more targeted services in the one or more transport networks.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising distributing the one or more resource entities and the service association to at least one of the one or more transport networks and one or more receiving devices.

9. An apparatus for resource planning in a communication network, the apparatus comprising:

input logic configured to receive at least one of transport network dependent information and transport network independent information; and

processing logic configured to generate one or more resource entities that represent resource requirements of one or more targeted services, respectively, wherein the resource entities are modeled from at least one of the transport network dependent information and the transport network independent information; and

wherein said processing logic is configured to determine whether the one or more resource entities can be supported by one or more transport networks.

The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said processing logic is configured to use a transport network protocol stack overhead to convert between application layer quality of service requirements associated with the one or more targeted services and usage requirements associated with the one or more transport networks.

11. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said processing logic is configured to use a statistical model to estimate aggregated traffic characteristics of variable bit-rate traffic associated with a selected targeted service to generate an associated resource entity.

12. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said processing logic is configured to:

assign priorities to the one or more resource entities; and

determine whether each resource entity can be supported by the one or more transport networks based on its respective priority.

13. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said processing logic is configured to determine an amount of resource associated with the one or more transport networks that can be used for non real-time traffic.

14. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said processing logic is configured to schedule at least a portion of the one or more resource entities based on a recurring template.

15. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said processing logic is configured to generate a service association that assigns the one or more resource entities to carry the one or more targeted services in the one or more transport networks.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, said processing logic is configured to distribute the one or more resource entities and the service association to at least one of the one or more transport networks and one or more receiving devices.

17. An apparatus for resource planning in a communication network, the apparatus comprising:

means for generating one or more resource entities that represent resource requirements of one or more targeted services, respectively, wherein the resource entities are modeled from at least one of transport network dependent information and transport network independent information; and

means for determining whether the one or more resource entities can be supported by one or more transport networks.

The apparatus of claim 17, wherein said means for generating comprises means for using a transport network protocol stack overhead to convert between application layer quality of service requirements associated with the one or more targeted services and usage requirements associated with the one or more transport networks.

19. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein said means for generating comprises means for using a statistical model to estimate aggregated traffic characteristics of variable bit-rate traffic associated with a selected targeted service to generate an associated resource entity.

20. The apparatus of claim 17, further comprising:

means for assigning priorities to the one or more resource entities; and

means for determining whether each resource entity can be supported by the one or more transport networks based on its respective priority.

21. The apparatus of claim 17, further comprising means for determining an amount of resource associated with the one or more transport networks that can be used for non real-time traffic.

22. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein said means for determining comprises means for scheduling at least a portion of the one or more resource entities based on a recurring template.

23. The apparatus of claim 17, further comprising means for generating a service association that assigns the one or more resource entities to carry the one or more targeted services in the one or more transport networks.

24. The apparatus of claim 23, further comprising means for distributing the one or more resource entities and the service association to at least one of the one or more transport networks and one or more receiving devices.

25. A computer program product for resource planning in a communication network, comprising:

a machine-readable medium embodying;

a first set of codes for causing a computer to generate one or more resource entities that represent resource requirements of one or more targeted services, respectively, wherein the resource entities are modeled from at least one of transport network dependent information and transport network independent information; and

a second set of codes for causing the computer to determine whether the one or more resource entities can be supported by one or more transport networks.

The machine-readable medium of claim 25, wherein said first set of codes are configured to cause the computer to use a transport network protocol stack overhead to convert between application layer quality of service requirements associated with the one or more targeted services and usage requirements associated with the one or more transport networks.

The machine-readable medium of claim 25, wherein said first set of codes are configured to cause the computer to use a statistical model to estimate aggregated traffic characteristics of variable bit-rate traffic associated with a selected targeted service to generate an associated resource entity.

28. The machine-readable medium of claim 25, wherein said first set of codes are configured to cause the computer to:

assign priorities to the one or more resource entities; and

determine whether each resource entity can be supported by the one or more transport networks based on its respective priority.

29. The machine-readable medium of claim 25, wherein said first set of codes is configured to cause the computer to generate a service association that assigns the one or more resource entities to carry the one or more targeted services in the one or more transport networks.

30. The machine-readable medium of claim 29, wherein said first set of codes is configured to cause the computer to distribute the one or more resource entities and the service association to at least one of the one or more transport networks and one or more receiving devices.

31. At least one integrated circuit configured to provide resource planning in a communication network, the at least one integrated circuit comprising:

a first module for generating one or more resource entities that represent resource requirements of one or more targeted services, respectively, wherein the resource entities are modeled from at least one of transport network dependent information and transport network independent information; and

a second module for determining whether the one or more resource entities can be supported by one or more transport networks.

The at least one integrated circuit of claim 31, wherein said first module is configured to use a transport network protocol stack overhead to convert between application layer quality of service requirements associated with the one or more targeted services and usage requirements associated with the one or more transport networks.

33. The at least one integrated circuit of claim 31, wherein said first module is configured to:

assign priorities to the one or more resource entities; and

determine whether each resource entity can be supported by the one or more transport networks based on its respective priority.

34. The at least one integrated circuit of claim 31, wherein said first module is configured for generating a service association that assigns the one or more resource entities to carry the one or more targeted services in the one or more transport networks.

35. The at least one integrated circuit of claim 34, wherein said first module is configured for distributing the one or more resource entities and the service association to at least one of the one or more transport networks and one or more receiving devices.
