Abstract

A dialysis fluid heating system includes a dialysis fluid heater; a heating portion of a dialysis fluid carrying set, the heating portion configured to be placed in contact with a surface of the dialysis fluid heater to heat a dialysis fluid; a pneumatic source connected to the dialysis fluid heater; and a logic implementer configured to cause the pneumatic source to apply a negative pressure between the heating portion and the surface of the dialysis fluid heater.

Claims

1. A dialysis fluid heating system comprising:

a dialysis fluid heater;

a heating portion of a dialysis fluid carrying set, the heating portion configured to be placed in contact with a surface of the dialysis fluid heater to heat a dialysis fluid;

a pneumatic source connected to the dialysis fluid heater; and

a logic implementer configured to cause the pneumatic source to apply a negative pressure between the heating portion and the surface of the dialysis fluid heater.

2. The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 1, wherein the heating portion of the dialysis fluid carrying set is one of:

(i) a disposable heating pathway disposed separately from a disposable cassette of the set;

(ii) part of the disposable cassette; and

(iii) a warmer bag.

The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 1, the surface a first surface and wherein the heating portion is configured to be placed in contact with a second surface of the dialysis fluid heater, the pneumatic source configured to apply the negative pressure between the first and second surfaces of the heater and the heating portion.

4. The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 1, wherein the logic implementer is configured to apply the negative pressure when the heater is powered to heat the dialysis fluid.

5. The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 1, wherein the logic implementer is configured to apply or increase the negative pressure when a negative pressure is applied to the dialysis fluid within the heating portion.

6. The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 1, the heating portion including at least one seal between first and second sheets of film of the heating portion, the at least one seal (i) defining a fluid heating pathway;

and (ii) positioned with respect to the pneumatic source to help the negative pressure spread from the pneumatic source.

7. The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 1, the heating portion including a frame, the frame sealed between portions of the dialysis fluid heater to facilitate the application of the negative pressure.

8. The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 7, wherein the frame is at least substantially rigid.

9. The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 1, the pneumatic source further configured to apply a positive pressure between the heating portion and the surface of the dialysis fluid heater.

10. The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 9, the logic implementer configured to cause the pneumatic source to apply the positive pressure to purge the heating portion.

11. The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 10, which includes at least one of a temperature sensor and a flow sensor, the logic implementer configured to purge the heating portion upon at least one of (i) a signal indicative of a dialysis fluid over-temperature condition from the temperature sensor;

and (ii) a signal indicative of a dialysis fluid no flow or low flow condition from the flow sensor.

The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 10, the dialysis fluid a first type of dialysis fluid, and which includes a second type of dialysis fluid, the logic implementer configured to purge the heating portion when switching from the first type of dialysis fluid to the second type of dialysis fluid.

13. The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 10, which includes an air sensor, the logic implementer configured to purge the heating portion upon a signal indicative of air present in the fluid carrying set from the air sensor.

14. The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 10, wherein an inner surface of the heating portion of the fluid carrying set is textured to aid in the purging of the heating portion.

15. The dialysis fluid heating system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the surface of the heater and an outer surface of the heating portion of the fluid carrying set is textured to help the negative pressure to reach more of the outer surface of the heater portion.

16. A dialysis fluid heating method comprising:

applying a negative pressure to an outside surface of a dialysis fluid heating element to maintain a differential pressure between the outside surface and a dialysis fluid located inside the heating element so as to be able to maintain flow of the dialysis fluid through the heating element.

17. The dialysis fluid heating method of claim 16, including applying the negative pressure to counter an effect of a negative head height on the heating element.

18. The dialysis fluid heating method of claim 16, including applying the negative pressure to counter an effect of a pump located downstream of the heating element.

19. A dialysis fluid heating method comprising:

applying a negative pressure to an outside surface of a dialysis fluid heating element to pull the surface toward a heating surface of a heater to increase a contact area between the surfaces.

20. A dialysis fluid heating method comprising:

applying a positive pressure to an outside surface of a dialysis fluid heating element in response to at least one condition selected from the group consisting of;

(i) a low/no flow condition of a dialysis fluid in the heating element;

(ii) overheating of the dialysis fluid in the heating element; and

(iii) air detected in the heating element or elsewhere in a disposable fluid set to which the heating element is connected.
