Abstract

A method for providing targeted content-messages on a wireless access terminal (W-AT) includes receiving metadata concerning a pool of content-messages from a remote apparatus, filtering the metadata based on a user profile on the W-AT to select at least one specific content-message, and receiving the at least one specific content-message from the pool of content-messages.

Claims

1. A method for providing targeted content-messages on a wireless access terminal (W-AT), the method comprising:

receiving metadata concerning a pool of content-messages from a remote apparatus;

filtering the metadata based on a user profile on the W-AT to select at least one specific content-message; and

receiving the at least one specific content-message from the pool of content-messages.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising sending an initial request to the remote apparatus for content-messages, wherein the initial request includes a content-message selection qualifier.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the initial request includes a content-message selection qualifier.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising sending a request to the remote apparatus for a selected specific content-message.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the metadata includes specific metadata for content-messages responsive to the selection qualifier.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

sending an initial request to the remote apparatus for the content-messages, wherein the initial request includes a content-message selection qualifier, and wherein the received metadata includes specific metadata for content-messages responsive to the selection qualifier.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

identifying the content-message based on user activity; and

presenting the content-message to the user in response to the user activity and based on the metadata, wherein the user activity includes a predetermined use of the W-AT associated with a metadata component of the content-message.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the user activity includes a content-message telescoping request.

9. The method of claim 7, further comprising retaining the content-messages in a cache on the W-AT.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising retaining the content-messages based on a cache policy, the cache policy including at least one rule selected from:

age of the content-message,

number of instances of presentation of the content-message,

total time of display of the content-message,

content-message selection by the user,

telescoping selection by the user, and

the use of services on the W-AT associated with content-message delivery.

11. The method of claim 7, further comprising retaining the content-messages in a cache on the W-AT in accordance with rules provided in metadata associated with the content-messages.

12. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

using context information in order to discriminate whether or not a user should receive content-messages and to determine whether and when to present the content-messages to the user, wherein the context information describes context profile of the W-AT and the operation of the W-AT.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the context information includes a subscription profile and preferences of the user of the W-AT.

14. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

using context information in order to discriminate whether or not a user should receive content-messages, the context information being used as a policy to allow or deny or change content-message delivery.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the context information includes a subscription profile and preferences of the user of the W-AT.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising requesting at least one content-message based on the user profile.

17. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving the content-message based on the user profile.

18. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving content-message metadata corresponding to a content-message;

selecting the content-message in accordance with the user profile and the received content-message metadata;

requesting the selected content-message.

19. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using usage-related rules on a wireless access terminal (W-AT) to generate a content-message-related profile;

generating the content-message-related profile in response to one or more basic rules, where the basic rules include at least one pre-scheduled event;

receiving content-message metadata corresponding to a content-message;

selecting the content-message in accordance with the user profile and the received content-message metadata; and

requesting the selected content-message.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising generating the content-message-related profile in response to one or more qualified rules, wherein the qualified rules include at least one condition relating to at least one of physical status information and operational status information.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein

the pool of content-messages includes a plurality of advertisements;

and

filtering the metadata based on a user profile on the W-AT includes selection of advertisements.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

identifying the content-message with user activity; and

presenting the content-message to the user in response to the user activity and based on the metadata, wherein wherein the user activity includes an advertisement telescoping request.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising retaining the advertisements in a cache on the W-AT.

24. The method of claim 23, further comprising retaining the advertisements based on a cache policy, the cache policy including a plurality of rules with at least one rule selected from:

age of the advertisement,

number of instances of presentation of the advertisement,

total time of display of the advertisement,

advertisement selection by the user,

telescoping selection by the user, and

the use of services on the W-AT associated with advertisement delivery.

25. The method of claim 22, further comprising retaining the advertisements in a cache on the W-AT in accordance with rules provided in metadata associated with the advertisements.

26. The method of claim 22, further comprising:

using context information in order to discriminate whether or not a user should receive advertisements and to determine whether and when to present the advertisements to the user, wherein the context information describes context profile of the W-AT and the operation of the W-AT.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the context information includes the subscription profile and preferences of the user of the W-AT.

28. The method of claim 22, further comprising:

using context information in order to discriminate whether or not a user should receive advertisements; and

the context information used as a policy to allow or deny or change advertisement delivery.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein

the context information includes the subscription profile and preferences of the user of the W-AT.

30. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

receiving advertisement metadata corresponding to an advertisement;

selecting the advertisement in accordance with the user profile and the received advertisement metadata; and

requesting the selected advertisement.

31. A method for providing targeted content-message to a wireless access terminal (W-AT), the method comprising:

providing the W-AT with metadata concerning a pool of content-messages, the metadata including user profile criteria;

receiving a response from the W-AT concerning a content-message selection corresponding to the metadata; and

providing at least one specific content-message from the pool of content-messages to the W-AT.

32. The method of claim 31, further comprising:

identifying the content-message with a category of user activity; and

presenting the content-message to the user in response to the user activity according to the metadata, wherein the user activity includes a predetermined use of the W-AT associated with a metadata component of the content-message.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein the user activity includes a content-message telescoping request.

34. The method of claim 32, further comprising:

using context information in order to discriminate whether or not a user should receive content-messages and to determine whether and when to present the content-messages to the user, wherein the context information describes context profile of the W-AT and the operation of the W-AT.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein the context information includes a subscription profile and preferences of the user of the W-AT.

36. The method of claim 35, further comprising:

identifying the content-message with a user activity; and

providing the content-message to the W-AT, wherein the user activity includes a predetermined use of the W-AT associated with a metadata component of the content-message, and wherein the user activity includes an advertisement telescoping request.

37. The method of claim 31, further comprising:

using context information in order to discriminate whether or not a user should receive advertisements and to provide the W-AT with rules to determine whether and when to present the advertisements to the user, wherein the context information describes context profile of the W-AT and at least one operation of the W-AT.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein the context information includes a subscription profile and preferences of the user of the W-AT.

39. A method for providing targeted content-message for presentation to a user of a wireless access terminal (W-AT), the method comprising:

providing a user profile on the W-AT;

receiving at least one content-message on the W-AT;

presenting the content-message to the user by the W-AT based on the user profile.

40. The method of claim 39, further comprising:

receiving metadata concerning a pool of content-messages from a remote apparatus;

filtering the metadata on the W-AT based on the user profile to select at least one specific content-message; and

receiving the specific content-message from a pool of content-messages.

41. The method of claim 40, further comprising presenting the received content-message to the user in response to the user activity and based on the metadata, wherein the user activity includes a predetermined use of the W-AT associated with a metadata component of the content-message.

42. The method of claim 41, wherein the user activity includes a content-message telescoping request.

43. The method of claim 39, further comprising:

using context information in order to discriminate whether or not a user should receive content-messages, and to determine whether and when to present the content-messages to the user.

44. The method of claim 39, further comprising caching content-messages for delayed presentation to the user.

45. A wireless access terminal (W-AT) capable of providing targeted content-message, the AT comprising:

a circuit capable of receiving metadata concerning a pool of content-messages from a remote apparatus;

a circuit capable of receiving at least one content-message;

a processor capable of filtering the received metadata based on a user profile on the W-AT to select at least one specific content-message, and selecting at least one specific content-message from the pool of content-messages.

46. The W-AT of claim 45, wherein the processor capable is of receiving metadata on the W-AT regarding a pool of content-messages, filtering the metadata and sending a further request to the remote apparatus for obtaining selected content-messages from the pool of content-messages.

47. The W-AT of claim 45, wherein:

the targeted content-messages include a plurality of advertisements; and

the processor filters the metadata based on a user profile on the W-AT and uses the filtered metadata to select one or more of the advertisements.

48. A wireless access terminal (W-AT) capable of providing targeted content-message, the AT comprising:

means for receiving metadata concerning a pool of content-messages from a remote apparatus;

means for filtering the metadata based on a user profile on the W-AT to select at least one specific content-message; and

means for receiving at least one specific content-message from the pool of content-messages.

49. The W-AT of claim 48, further comprising:

means for identifying the content-message with user activity; and

means for presenting the content-message to the user in response to the user activity and based on the metadata, wherein the user activity includes a combination of a predetermined use of the W-AT associated with a metadata component of the content-message.

50. The W-AT of claim 48, further comprising means for retaining the content-messages in a cache on the W-AT in accordance with rules provided in metadata associated with the content-messages.

51. The W-AT of claim 48, further comprising:

means for using context information in order to discriminate whether or not a user should receive content-messages, and

means for determining whether and when to present the content-messages to the user, wherein the context information describes context profile of the W-AT and the operation of the W-AT.

52. A computer program product, comprising:

a computer-readable medium comprising;

a first set of instructions for receiving metadata concerning a pool of content-messages from a remote apparatus;

a second set of instructions for filtering the metadata based on a user profile on the W-AT to select at least one specific content-message; and

a third set of instructions for receiving at least one specific content-message from the pool of content-messages.

53. The computer program product of claim 52, further comprising:

a fourth set of instructions for using usage-related rules on a wireless access terminal (W-AT) to generate a content-message-related profile;

a fifth set of instructions for using the rules to generate the content-message-related profile in response to basic rules and qualified rules;

a sixth set of instructions for receiving content-message metadata corresponding to a content-message;

a seventh set of instructions for selecting the content-message in accordance with the user profile and the received content-message metadata; and

an eighth set of instructions for requesting the selected content-message.

54. A wireless access terminal (W-AT) comprising:

means for receiving metadata concerning a pool of content-messages from a remote apparatus;

means for filtering the metadata based on a user profile on the W-AT to select at least one specific content-message; and

means for receiving at least one specific content-message from the pool of content-messages.

55. The W-AT of claim 54, further comprising:

means for sending an initial request to the remote apparatus for the content-messages, wherein the initial request includes a content-message selection qualifier, and wherein the metadata received includes specific metadata for content-messages responsive to the selection qualifier.

56. The W-AT of claim 54, further comprising:

means for receiving content-message metadata corresponding to a content-message;

means for selecting the content-message in accordance with the user profile and the received content-message metadata; and

means for requesting the selected content-message.

57. The W-AT of claim 54, further comprising:

means for using usage-related rules on a wireless access terminal (W-AT) to generate a content-message-related profile;

means for using the rules to generate the content-message-related profile in response to basic rules and qualified rules, where the basic rules include pre-scheduled events, and the qualified rules include at least one condition and event, wherein a condition relates to at least one of physical status information and operational status information;

means for receiving content-message metadata corresponding to a content-message;

means for selecting the content-message in accordance with the user profile and the received content-message metadata; and

means for requesting the selected content-message.

58. The W-AT of claim 54, further comprising means for caching content-messages for delayed presentation to the user.

59. The W-AT of claim 54, wherein:

the pool of content-messages includes a plurality of advertisements; and

filtering the metadata based on a user profile on the W-AT includes selection of advertisements.

60. The W-AT of claim 59, further comprising:

means for identifying the content-message with a user activity; and

means for presenting the content-message to the user in response to the user activity according to the metadata, wherein the user activity includes a predetermined use of the W-AT associated with a metadata component of the content-message, wherein the user activity includes an advertisement telescoping request.

61. The W-AT of claim 60, further comprising:

means for using context information in order to discriminate whether or not a user should receive advertisements, and to determine whether and when to present the advertisements to the user, wherein the context information describes context profile of the W-AT and the operation of the W-AT.

62. The W-AT of claim 54, further comprising:

means for receiving advertisement metadata corresponding to an advertisement;

means for selecting the advertisement in accordance with the user profile and the received advertisement metadata;

means for requesting the selected advertisement.

63. A chipset including at least one semiconductor integrated circuit chip, for use in a wireless communication device (WCD), the chipset comprising:

a circuit capable of receiving metadata concerning a pool of content-messages from a remote apparatus;

a circuit capable of filtering the metadata based on a user profile on the W-AT to select at least one specific content-message; and

a circuit capable of receiving at least one specific content-message from the pool of content-messages.

64. The chipset of claim 63, wherein:

the pool of content-messages includes a plurality of advertisements; and

the circuit capable of filtering filters the metadata based on a user profile on the W-AT is capable of selection of advertisements.
