Abstract

Medical devices and related methods are disclosed. In some embodiments, a method of manufacturing a medical device or a medical device component includes contacting a non-fluid first member and a second member, the first member comprising a first polymer and an alignable material different from the first polymer; aligning the alignable material; and bonding the first and second members together.

Claims

1. A method of manufacturing a medical device comprising:

contacting a non-fluid first member and a second member, the first member comprising a first polymer and an alignable material different from the first polymer;

aligning the alignable material; and

bonding the first and second members together.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the alignable material is aligned after contacting the first member and the second member.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the alignable material is aligned magnetically.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the alignable material comprises carbon.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the alignable material comprises a carbon nanotube or a carbon fiber.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first member comprises from about 2 to about 50 percent by weight of the alignable material.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second members are held in contact by a heat shrink material.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second members are bonded by heating at least one of the members.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second members are bonded using a laser.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the second member comprises a second polymer and a second alignable material.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second members are components of a balloon catheter.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the first member comprises from about 2 to about 60 percent by weight of the alignable material.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the first member is solidified to form a component of a balloon catheter.

14. A method of manufacturing a medical device or a medical device component, the method comprising:

introducing a first composition comprising a first polymer and an alignable material into a cavity;

aligning the alignable material; and

solidifying the first composition in the cavity.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the alignable material is aligned magnetically.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the alignable material comprises carbon.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the alignable material comprises a carbon nanotube or a carbon fiber.

18. An endoprosthesis, comprising:

a metallic tubular structure; and

a first composition on the tubular structure, the first composition comprising a polymer and an alignable material comprising a carbon nanotube or a carbon fiber aligned along a selected direction.

19. The endoprosthesis of claim 18, wherein the first composition further comprises a drug.

20. The endoprosthesis of claim 18, wherein the first composition comprises from about 2 to about 50 percent by weight of the alignable material.
