Cylinder Charge Temperature Control for an Internal Combustion Engine
First Claim
1. A method of operating an engine including at least a first cylinder and a second cylinder, the method comprising:
- operating the first cylinder of the engine to provide a net flow of gases from an intake manifold to an exhaust manifold while combusting a mixture including said gases in said first cylinder during each cycle of the first cylinder; and
during said operation of the first cylinder, operating the second cylinder of the engine to provide a net flow of gases from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold, wherein said net flow of gases from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold includes at least a portion of said combusted mixture by the first cylinder.

Abstract
A method of operating an engine including at least a first cylinder and a second cylinder, the method comprising operating the first cylinder of the engine to provide a net flow of gases from an intake manifold to an exhaust manifold while combusting a mixture including said gases in said first cylinder during each cycle of the first cylinder; and during said operation of the first cylinder, operating the second cylinder of the engine to provide a net flow of gases from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold, wherein said net flow of gases from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold includes at least a portion of said combusted mixture by the first cylinder.

12. An engine system, comprising:
-
a first cylinder; a second cylinder; an intake manifold coupled to the first and second cylinders; an exhaust manifold coupled to the first and second cylinders; and a control system configured to; operate the first cylinder to provide a net flow of gases from the intake manifold to the exhaust manifold over a cycle of the first cylinder while performing combustion of a mixture including intake air and exhaust gases in said first cylinder; during said operation of the first cylinder, operate the second cylinder of the engine to provide a net flow of gases for each cycle of the second cylinder from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold; and adjust an operating parameter of the second cylinder to vary a condition of said gases that are provided to the intake manifold by the second cylinder. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16, 17)

18. A method of operating an engine including at least a first and a second cylinder, comprising:
-
operating the first cylinder to combust a first mixture of fuel and gases, wherein said gases of the first mixture are received from an intake manifold; operating the second cylinder to combust a second mixture of fuel and gases, and providing a first portion of said combusted second mixture to the intake manifold and a second portion of said combusted second mixture to the exhaust manifold; and adjusting an amount of said first portion relative to an amount of said second portion to control a temperature of the first mixture, wherein the first portion is greater than the second portion. - View Dependent Claims (19, 20)
