Abstract

Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate identifying peers based upon encoded signals during peer discovery in a peer to peer network. For example, direct signaling that partitions a time-frequency resource into a number of segments can be utilized to communicate an identifier within a peer discovery interval; thus, a particular segment selected for transmission can signal a portion of the identifier, while a remainder can be signaled based upon tones communicated within the selected segment. Moreover, a subset of symbols within the resource can be reserved (e.g., unused) to enable identifying and/or correcting timing offset. Further, signaling can be effectuated over a plurality of peer discovery intervals such that partial identifiers communicated during each of the peer discovery intervals can be linked (e.g., based upon overlapping bits and/or bloom filter information).

Claims

1. A method that facilitates directly signaling an identifier during peer discovery, comprising:

generating a time varying coded identifier;

selecting a segment from a plurality of segments within a peer discovery resource for transmission based upon a portion of the coded identifier; and

signaling a remainder of the coded identifier during the selected segment.

2. The method of claim 1, generating the time varying coded identifier further comprises adding time varying bits to a raw identifier.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein 13 time varying bits are added to a 32 bit raw identifier to yield the time varying coded identifier.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising partitioning the coded identifier into a group related to the selected segment and a plurality of groups related to tones transmitted during the selected segment.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the group related to the selected segment is a 3 bit group and the plurality of groups related to the tones includes seven 6 bit groups.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising transmitting a tone upon seven symbols in the selected segment respectively based upon the seven 6 bit groups.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the peer discovery resource is partitioned into the plurality of segments, which includes eight segments.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the selected segment varies during differing peer discovery intervals as a function of the time varying coded identifier.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one symbol in the selected segment is a reserved symbol.

10. A wireless communications apparatus, comprising:

a memory that retains instructions related to generating a time varying coded identifier, selecting a segment from a plurality of segments within a peer discovery resource for transmission based upon a portion of the coded identifier, and signaling a remainder of the coded identifier during the selected segment; and

a processor, coupled to the memory, configured to execute the instructions retained in the memory.

11. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 10, wherein the memory further retains instructions for generating the time varying coded identifier further comprises adding time varying bits to a raw identifier.

12. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 11, wherein 13 time varying bits are added to a 32 bit raw identifier to yield the time varying coded identifier.

13. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 10, wherein the memory further retains instructions for partitioning the coded identifier into a group related to the selected segment and a plurality of groups related to tones transmitted during the selected segment.

14. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 13, wherein the group related to the selected segment is a 3 bit group and the plurality of groups related to the tones includes seven 6 bit groups.

15. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 14, wherein the memory further retains instructions for transmitting a tone upon seven symbols in the selected segment respectively based upon the seven 6 bit groups.

16. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 10, wherein the peer discovery resource is partitioned into the plurality of segments, which includes eight segments.

17. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 10, wherein the selected segment varies during differing peer discovery intervals as a function of the time varying coded identifier.

18. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 10, wherein at least one symbol in the selected segment is a reserved symbol.

19. A wireless communications apparatus that enables directly signaling an identifier during peer discovery, comprising:

means for generating a time varying coded identifier;

means for selecting a segment from a plurality of segments within a peer discovery resource for transmission based upon a portion of the coded identifier; and

means for signaling a remainder of the coded identifier during the selected segment.

20. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 19, further comprising means for generating the time varying coded identifier further comprises adding time varying bits to a raw identifier.

21. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 20, wherein 13 time varying bits are added to a 32 bit raw identifier to yield the time varying coded identifier.

22. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 19, further comprising means for partitioning the coded identifier into a group related to the selected segment and a plurality of groups related to tones transmitted during the selected segment.

23. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 22, wherein the group related to the selected segment is a 3 bit group and the plurality of groups related to the tones includes seven 6 bit groups.

24. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 23, further comprising means for transmitting a tone upon seven symbols in the selected segment respectively based upon the seven 6 bit groups.

25. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 19, wherein the peer discovery resource is partitioned into the plurality of segments, which includes eight segments.

26. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 19, wherein the selected segment varies during differing peer discovery intervals as a function of the time varying coded identifier.

27. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 19, wherein at least one symbol in the selected segment is a reserved symbol.

28. A machine-readable medium having stored thereon machine-executable instructions for:

generating a time varying coded identifier;

selecting a segment from a plurality of segments within a peer discovery resource for transmission based upon a portion of the coded identifier; and

signaling a remainder of the coded identifier during the selected segment.

29. The machine-readable medium of claim 28, the machine-executable instructions further comprise generating the time varying coded identifier further comprises adding time varying bits to a raw identifier.

30. The machine-readable medium of claim 29, wherein 13 time varying bits are added to a 32 bit raw identifier to yield the time varying coded identifier.

31. The machine-readable medium of claim 28, the machine-executable instructions further comprise partitioning the coded identifier into a group related to the selected segment and a plurality of groups related to tones transmitted during the selected segment.

32. The machine-readable medium of claim 31, wherein the group related to the selected segment is a 3 bit group and the plurality of groups related to the tones includes seven 6 bit groups.

33. The machine-readable medium of claim 32, the machine-executable instructions further comprise transmitting a tone upon seven symbols in the selected segment respectively based upon the seven 6 bit groups.

34. The machine-readable medium of claim 28, wherein the peer discovery resource is partitioned into the plurality of segments, which includes eight segments.

35. The machine-readable medium of claim 28, wherein the selected segment varies during differing peer discovery intervals as a function of the time varying coded identifier.

36. The machine-readable medium of claim 28, wherein at least one symbol in the selected segment is a reserved symbol.

37. In a wireless communications system, an apparatus comprising:

a processor configured to;

generate a time varying coded identifier;

select a segment from a plurality of segments within a peer discovery resource for transmission based upon a portion of the coded identifier; and

signal a remainder of the coded identifier during the selected segment.

38. A method that facilitates decoding a directly signaled identifier during peer discovery, comprising:

receiving tones upon symbols in a segment of a peer discovery resource;

correlating a particular tone from each of the symbols based upon power level similarity to determine a sequence of tones obtained from a common transmitting wireless terminal; and

determining an identifier of the transmitting wireless terminal based upon the segment and the sequence of tones.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein the segment includes eight symbols.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein at least one of the eight symbols is an unused symbol.

41. The method of claim 38, further comprising forming the sequence with tones from each of the symbols with a highest energy level.

42. The method of claim 38, further comprising removing a tone with a substantially different energy level from other tones in the sequence.

43. The method of claim 38, further comprising forming a plurality of sequences of tones with correlated power levels and determining identifiers of a plurality of transmitting wireless terminals.

44. The method of claim 38, further comprising determining a portion of the identifier based upon an identity of the segment out of a plurality of segments in the peer discovery resource.

45. The method of claim 44, further comprising decoding the sequence of tones to yield a remainder of the identifier.

46. The method of claim 38, further comprising evaluating parity check information incorporated in the identifier to determine whether to add a raw identifier corresponding to the identifier to a peer list.

47. A wireless communications apparatus, comprising:

a memory that retains instructions for receiving tones upon symbols in a segment of a peer discovery resource, correlating a particular tone from each of the symbols based upon power level similarity to determine a sequence of tones obtained from a common transmitting wireless terminal, and determining an identifier of the transmitting wireless terminal based upon the segment and the sequence of tones; and

a processor, coupled to the memory, configured to execute the instructions retained in the memory.

48. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 47, wherein the segment includes eight symbols and at least one of the eight symbols is an unused symbol.

49. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 47, wherein the memory further retains instructions for forming the sequence with tones from each of the symbols with a highest energy level.

50. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 47, wherein the memory further retains instructions for removing a tone with a substantially different energy level from other tones in the sequence.

51. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 47, wherein the memory further retains instructions for forming a plurality of sequences of tones with correlated power levels and determining identifiers of a plurality of transmitting wireless terminals.

52. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 47, wherein the memory further retains instructions for decoding the sequence of tones to yield a remainder of the identifier.

53. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 47, wherein the memory further retains instructions for evaluating parity check information incorporated in the identifier to determine whether to add a raw identifier corresponding to the identifier to a peer list.

54. A wireless communications apparatus that enables decoding a directly signaled identifier during peer discovery, comprising:

means for receiving tones upon symbols in a segment of a peer discovery resource;

means for correlating a particular tone from each of the symbols based upon power level similarity to determine a sequence of tones obtained from a common transmitting wireless terminal; and

means for determining an identifier of the transmitting wireless terminal based upon the segment and the sequence of tones.

55. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 54, wherein the segment includes eight symbols and at least one of the eight symbols is an unused symbol.

56. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 54, further comprising means for forming the sequence with tones from each of the symbols with a highest energy level.

57. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 54, further comprising means for removing a tone with a substantially different energy level from other tones in the sequence.

58. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 54, further comprising means for forming a plurality of sequences of tones with correlated power levels and determining identifiers of a plurality of transmitting wireless terminals.

59. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 54, further comprising means for determining a portion of the identifier based upon an identity of the segment out of a plurality of segments in the peer discovery resource.

60. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 54, further comprising means for decoding the sequence of tones to yield a remainder of the identifier.

61. The wireless communications apparatus of claim 54, further comprising means for evaluating parity check information incorporated in the identifier to determine whether to add a raw identifier corresponding to the identifier to a peer list.

62. A machine-readable medium having stored thereon machine-executable instructions for:

receiving tones upon symbols in a segment of a peer discovery resource;

correlating a particular tone from each of the symbols based upon power level similarity to determine a sequence of tones obtained from a common transmitting wireless terminal; and

determining an identifier of the transmitting wireless terminal based upon the segment and the sequence of tones.

63. The machine-readable medium of claim 62, wherein the segment includes eight symbols and at least one of the eight symbols is an unused symbol.

64. The machine-readable medium of claim 62, the machine-executable instructions further comprise forming the sequence with tones from each of the symbols with a highest energy level.

65. The machine-readable medium of claim 62, the machine-executable instructions further comprise removing a tone with a substantially different energy level from other tones in the sequence.

66. The machine-readable medium of claim 62, the machine-executable instructions further comprise forming a plurality of sequences of tones with correlated power levels and determining identifiers of a plurality of transmitting wireless terminals.

67. The machine-readable medium of claim 62, the machine-executable instructions further comprise determining a portion of the identifier based upon an identity of the segment out of a plurality of segments in the peer discovery resource.

68. The machine-readable medium of claim 62, the machine-executable instructions further comprise decoding the sequence of tones to yield a remainder of the identifier.

69. The machine-readable medium of claim 62, the machine-executable instructions further comprise evaluating parity check information incorporated in the identifier to determine whether to add a raw identifier corresponding to the identifier to a peer list.

70. In a wireless communication system, an apparatus comprising:

a processor configured to;

receive tones upon symbols in a segment of a peer discovery resource;

correlate a particular tone from each of the symbols based upon power level similarity to determine a sequence of tones obtained from a common transmitting wireless terminal; and

determine an identifier of the transmitting wireless terminal based upon the segment and the sequence of tones.
