Abstract

A Call Alerting and Control System is provided in a communication environment to allow an Internet user (“user”) approximately real-time monitoring of information about an incoming call from a calling party while maintaining a connection with the Internet. The monitored information can include the calling party'"'"'s name and telephone number. The system could also allow the user to provide an answering machine-type message to the calling party and the user to listen to the calling party'"'"'s response to the message while still connected to the Internet. The system can further allow the user to reroute, answer or otherwise treat the incoming call while, at the user'"'"'s discretion, either maintaining or disconnecting a connection to the Internet.

29. A method for managing incoming calls from a calling party to a communication line of a user, where the user is connected to a packet-based data network, comprising:

receiving an incoming call from the calling party;

determining with a service control point how to handle the incoming call, including determining with information from a gateway system whether the user is connected to the packet-based data network;

providing instructions from the service control point to a service switching point to supply a busy or call waiting signal to the calling party if the user is not connected to the packet-based data network;

otherwise, forwarding the incoming call to the gateway system if the user is connected to the packet-based data network; and

establishing a one-way voice connection to allow a called party to listen to the calling party contemporaneous with the calling party leaving a message and while the called party maintains a connection with the packet-based data network, without answering the incoming call.

30. The method of claim 29 further comprising:

alerting the called party of the incoming call from the calling party;

prompting the called party to select the announcement from a choice of at least one announcement; and

playing the announcement chosen by the called party.

31. The method of claim 29 further comprising:

associating the announcement with a blacklisted calling party identification; and

automatically playing the announcement to the blacklisted calling party upon receiving an incoming call from the calling party.

32. The method of claim 29 further comprising:

recording the announcement;

storing the recorded announcement; and

identifying the stored announcement with a calling party identification.

33. The method of claim 29 wherein allowing a one-way voice connection to be established between the calling party to the called party-comprises setting up a packet switched telephony protocol connection between the calling party and the called party.

34. The method of claim 33 wherein the packet switched telephony protocol connection includes a Voice Over Internet Protocol connection.

35. The method of claim 29 further including establishing a two-way voice connection with the user if the user chooses to answer the incoming call.

36. The method of claim 29 further comprising automatically treating the incoming call in accordance with an identity of the calling party.

37. The method of claim 36 where treating the incoming call further includes disconnecting the incoming call.

38. The method of claim 29 further comprising answering the incoming call.

39. The method of claim 38 where answering the incoming call includes connecting the calling party to the user over the packet-based data network via a two-way Voice Over Internet Protocol.

40. The method of claim 29 where answering the incoming call further includes:

disconnecting the packet-based data network connection; and

connecting the calling party to the user via a switched voice connection.

41. The method of claim 29 further including automatically rerouting the incoming call to an alternate communication line in accordance with an identity of the calling party.

42. A method for managing incoming calls from a calling party to a communication line of a user, where the user is connected to a packet-based data network, the method comprising:

receiving an incoming call via a telephone network, wherein the telephone network includes a service control point, a service switching point and a gateway system;

determining with information from the service control point whether the user is connected to the packet-based data network;

if the user is connected to the packet-based data network, prompting the user to choose at least one call handling option, where the call handling option includes allowing a one-way voice connection to be established by the service switching point to the user to allow the user to listen to the calling party contemporaneous with the calling party leaving a message and while the user maintains a connection with the packet-based data network, without answering the incoming call.

43. The method of claim 42 where the call handling option includes automatically treating the incoming call in accordance with an identity of the calling party.

44. The method of claim 43 where treating the incoming call further includes sending the incoming call to a voice messaging server.

45. The method of claim 44 where treating the incoming call further includes disconnecting the incoming call.

46. The method of claim 42 where the call handling option includes answering the incoming call.

47. The method of claim 46 where answering the incoming call includes connecting the calling party to the user over the packet-based data network via a two-way Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

48. The method of claim 46 where answering the incoming call further includes:

disconnecting the packet-based data network connection; and

connecting the calling party to the user via a switched voice connection.

49. The method of claim 42 further including processing the incoming call before notifying the user.

50. The method of claim 49 where the processing includes automatically rerouting the incoming call to an alternate communication line in accordance with an identity of the calling party.

51. The method of claim 49 where the processing includes automatically connecting the incoming call to the user in accordance with an identity of the calling party.
