Abstract

Low cost semiconductor manufacturing techniques have provided consumers with a wide range of electronic devices supporting communications according to multiple standards. These electronic devices will be deployed within many operational jurisdictions, particularly with roaming features, such as Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America and North America. However, operational compliance requirements can vary substantially with these different jurisdictions. Current electronic devices are designed, manufactured, calibrated and operated according to a specification providing compliance with broad range of operational jurisdictions despite the performance limitations this applies in many of the operational jurisdictions. Accordingly, there is provided a method of dynamically configuring the electronic device based upon a geographically based determination of the operational jurisdiction from global navigation systems data received by the electronic device. Based upon the determined operational jurisdiction, the operational parameters of a device'"'"'s communication interfaces are adjusted for improving performance and efficiency of the device within these jurisdictions.

Claims

1. A method comprising;

providing a wireless circuit operating according to a first wireless standard, the wireless circuit comprising at least one of a transmitter and a receiver;

providing a wireless receiver for receiving a location signal, the wireless receiver co-located proximate to the wireless circuit and operating according to a second other wireless standard;

determining at least an indication of an operational jurisdiction of the wireless circuit in dependence upon at least the location signal; and

modifying at least an aspect of the wireless circuit in dependence upon at least the operational jurisdiction.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein,

providing a wireless circuit according to the first wireless standard comprises providing a wireless circuit according to at least one of IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.15, IEEE 802.16, IEEE 802.20, UMTS, GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, GPRS, ITU-R 5.138, ITU-R 5.150, ITU-R 5.280, and IMT-2000.

3. A method according to claim 1 wherein,

providing a wireless receiver according to the second wireless standard comprises providing a wireless receiver according to at least one of Global Navigation Satellite System, Global Positioning System, Galileo Positioning System, Beidou Navigation System, and Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System.

4. A method according to claim 1 wherein,

determining an operational jurisdiction comprises:

polling at least one of a plurality of base stations operating according to the first wireless standard; and

receiving from each base station at least an indication of operational jurisdiction.

5. A method according to claim 4 wherein,

determining the operational jurisdiction comprises selecting one of the plurality of indicated operational jurisdictions, the selected operational jurisdiction selected in dependence upon at least one of a user input, a predetermined aspect of receiving the indication, and a physical location, the physical location determined in dependence upon at least the location signal.

6. A method according to claim 1 wherein,

determining the operation jurisdiction comprises:

establishing a physical location, the physical location determined in dependence upon at least the location signal; and

accessing a look-up table in dependence upon the physical location to retrieve the operational jurisdiction, the look-up table comprising at least one of a plurality of operational jurisdictions, wherein each operational jurisdiction has associated with it data relating to a range of physical locations covered by the operational jurisdiction.

7. A method according to claim 6 wherein,

accessing a look-up table to retrieve the operational jurisdiction comprises:

retrieving at least two possible operational jurisdictions from the look-up table; and

selecting the operational jurisdiction by at least one of user input, stored personal data associated with the user of a device comprising the wireless circuit, and a predetermined aspect of wireless communications with each operational jurisdiction.

8. A method according to claim 7 wherein,

predetermined aspect of wireless communications with each operational jurisdiction comprises determining for each operational jurisdiction at least a measure of wireless communications with the wireless circuit and selecting the best measure.

9. A method according to claim 1 wherein,

modifying an aspect of the wireless circuit comprises modifying data coding of signaling at least one of provided to or received from the wireless circuit.

10. A method according to claim 1 wherein,

modifying an aspect of the wireless circuit comprises providing a tuner and adjusting a tuning range of the tuner.

11. A method according to claim 1 wherein,

modifying an aspect of the wireless circuit comprises providing a filter and adjusting a bandwidth of the filter.

12. A method according to claim 1 wherein,

modifying an aspect of the wireless circuit comprises providing at least an amplifier and adjusting at least one of a bias voltage provided to the amplifier and a bandwidth of the amplifier.

13. A method according to claim 1 wherein,

modifying an aspect of the wireless circuit comprises providing at least one amplifier of a plurality of amplifiers and switching in the at least one of the plurality of amplifiers in dependence upon the operational requirements of the jurisdiction.

14. A method according to claim 1 comprising;

providing another wireless circuit, the other wireless circuit operating according to a third wireless standard, the third wireless standard other than the first and second wireless standards, the wireless circuit comprising at least one of a transmitter and a receiver;

enabling at least one of the wireless circuits in dependence upon the operational requirements of the jurisdiction; and

,

modifying at least an aspect of the enabled at least one of the wireless circuits in dependence upon at least the operational requirements of the jurisdiction.

15. A method according to claim 14 wherein,

enabling comprises enabling one of the wireless circuits and disabling the other wireless circuit.

16. A method according to claim 14 wherein,

providing a wireless circuit according to the third wireless standard comprises providing a wireless circuit according to at least one of IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.15, IEEE 802.16, IEEE 802.20, UMTS, GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, GPRS, ITU-R 5.138, ITU-R 5.150, ITU-R 5.280, and IMT-2000.

17. A method according to claim 1 wherein,

modifying the at least an aspect of the wireless circuit results in at least one of a maximizing transmitted power from the wireless circuit, maximizing the range of communications with the wireless circuit, and maximizing a data rate of communications using the wireless circuit.

18. A method according to claim 1 wherein,

modifying the at least an aspect of the wireless circuit results in at least one of reducing interference, reducing a channel search time, and increasing a measure of efficiency of the wireless circuit.

19. A method according to claim 1 wherein,

modifying the at least an aspect of the wireless circuit comprises adjusting at least one of a bandwidth of a tunable filter, a center frequency of a tunable filter, the rejection qualities of the filter, the loss of the filter, an output power of an amplifier, the magnitude of out-of-band emissions from the amplifier, a bias control voltage applied to an amplifier, the susceptibility of the amplifier to saturation, the robustness of the amplifier to overload conditions, the linearity of the amplifier, the noise figure of the amplifier, the linearity of the down conversion mixer, the input dynamic range of the analog to digital converter, the spurious dynamic range of the analog to digital converter, the gain of the amplifier, the correlation gain of the receiver, the number of correlation fingers processing the signal, and the distribution between hardware and software correlation.

20. A method comprising;

providing a circuit supporting data communications according to a communications standard;

providing a wireless receiver for receiving a location signal, the wireless receiver proximate to the circuit and operating according to a first wireless standard;

determining at least an indication of an operational jurisdiction of the circuit in dependence upon at least the location signal; and

configuring an aspect of the data communications of the circuit in dependence upon at least the operational jurisdiction.

21. A method according to claim 20 wherein,

providing a wireless receiver according to the wireless standard comprises providing a wireless receiver according to at least one of Global Navigation Satellite System, Global Positioning System, Galileo Positioning System, Beidou Navigation System, and Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System.

22. A method according to claim 20 wherein,

providing a circuit according to a communications standard comprises providing a circuit according to at least one of POTS, IEEE 802.3, DSL, ADSL, SONET, Internet Protocol, IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.15, IEEE 802.16, IEEE 802.20, UMTS, GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, GPRS, ITU-R 5.138, ITU-R 5.150, ITU-R 5.280, and IMT-2000.

23. A method according to claim 20 wherein,

determining an operational jurisdiction comprises:

polling at least one of a plurality of communication interfaces operating according to the communication standard, each of the plurality of communication interfaces at least one of electrically and wirelessly connected to the circuit; and

receiving from each communications interface at least an indication of operational jurisdiction.

24. A method according to claim 23 wherein,

determining the operational jurisdiction comprises selecting one of the plurality of indicated operational jurisdictions, the selected operational jurisdiction selected in dependence upon at least one of a user input, a predetermined aspect of receiving the indication, and a physical location, the physical location determined in dependence upon at least the location signal.

25. A method according to claim 20 wherein,

determining an operation jurisdiction comprises:

establishing a physical location, the physical location determined in dependence upon at least the location signal; and

accessing a look-up table in dependence upon the physical location to retrieve the operational jurisdiction, the look-up table comprising at least one of a plurality of operational jurisdictions, wherein each operational jurisdiction has associated with it data relating to a range of physical locations covered by the operational jurisdiction.

26. A method according to claim 25 wherein,

accessing a look-up table to retrieve the operational jurisdiction comprises:

retrieving at least two possible operational jurisdictions from the look-up table; and

selecting the operational jurisdiction by at least one of user input, stored personal data associated with the user of a device comprising the wireless circuit, an operating mode of a device comprising the wireless circuit, and a predetermined aspect of data communications with each operational jurisdiction.

27. A method according to claim 26 wherein,

a predetermined aspect of data communications with each operational jurisdiction comprises determining for each operational jurisdiction at least a measure of data communications with the circuit and selecting the best measure.

28. A method according to claim 20 wherein,

modifying an aspect of the circuit comprises modifying data coding of signaling at least one of provided to or received from the circuit.

29. A method according to claim 20 wherein,

modifying an aspect of the circuit comprises providing at least one of a tuner and adjusting a tuning range of the tuner, providing a filter and adjusting a bandwidth of the filter, providing an amplifier and adjusting at least one of a bias voltage provided to the amplifier and a bandwidth of the amplifier, and providing at least one driver of a plurality of drivers and switching in the at least one of the plurality of drivers in dependence upon the configuration jurisdiction.

30. A method according to claim 20 wherein,

modifying the at least an aspect of the circuit results in at least one of a maximizing transmitted power, maximizing the range of data communications, maximizing a datarate of data communications, reducing potential interference from other transmitters, reducing an acquisition time, reducing power consumption of the circuit, and increasing a measure of efficiency of the circuit.

31. A method according to claim 20 further comprising;

destroying the contents of a memory within the circuit when the operational jurisdiction satisfies predetermined criterion.
