Abstract

A wireless mobile communication (WMC) device may be determine a quality of service (QOS) required to communicate data. The WMC device may utilize a plurality of physical layers available in the WMC device to retain the QOS throughout the data communication. The physical layers may comprise a plurality of wireless technologies and/or a plurality of transmission power levels within each wireless technology. Selection of physical layers that may be utilized may comprise determination of available QOS through the physical layers, available power in the WMC device, and/or power requirement for communicating data via the physical layers. Data encoding may also be utilized to alter size of communicated data while retaining the required QOS. Data encoding may comprise utilizing encoding schemes, data compression, and/or redundancy bits. A set of deadlines may be utilized to enable switching between available physical layers to ensure maintaining and/or achieving required QOS.

Claims

1. A method for improving wireless devices, the method comprising:

determining via a wireless mobile communication device, a required quality of service (QOS) for communicating data; and

selecting via said wireless mobile communication device, based on availability of resources and/or capabilities in said wireless mobile communication device, at least one of a plurality of available physical layers to achieve said required quality of service.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said plurality of available physical layers comprise cellular, Bluetooth, ZigBee, WLAN, and/or WiMAX.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein said plurality of available physical layers comprises a plurality of transmission power levels.

4. The method according to claim 1, wherein said resources and/or capabilities in said wireless mobile communication device comprise power availability in said wireless mobile communication device.

5. The method according to claim 1, comprising dynamically re-selecting at least one of said plurality of available physical layers during said communication of data to achieve and/or maintain said required quality of service.

6. The method according to claim 1, comprising selecting deadlines that enable switching among said plurality of available physical layers to achieve and/or maintain said quality of service during said communication of data.

7. The method according to claim 6, comprising switching between transmission power levels after expiration of one of said deadlines, wherein the new transmission power level utilized after the expiration of said one of said deadlines is higher than the transmission power level utilized prior to the expiration of said one of said deadlines.

8. The method according to claim 6, comprising switching between wireless technologies after expiration of a one of said deadlines, wherein the wireless technology utilized after the expiration of said one of said deadlines enables improved reliability and/or performance than the wireless technology utilized prior to the expiration of said one of said deadlines.

9. The method according to claim 1, comprising altering a size of said data prior to said communication to achieve said required quality of service.

10. The method according to claim 9, comprising reducing or increasing a size of said data prior to communication to achieve said required quality of service.

11. The method according to claim 9, comprising utilizing one or more encoding schemes to achieve said reduction of size of said data prior to said communication.

12. The method according to claim 11, comprising dynamically re-encoding said encoded data with a new encoding scheme to achieve said reduction of size of said data prior to said communication.

13. The method according to claim 1, comprising selecting at least one of said plurality of available physical layers based on content and/or type of said data.

14. A system for improving wireless devices, the system comprising:

at least one processor utilized in a wireless mobile communication device that enables determining via a wireless mobile communication device, a required quality of service (QOS) for communicating data; and

said at least one processor enables selecting via said wireless mobile communication device, based on availability of resources and/or capabilities in said wireless mobile communication device, at least one of a plurality of available physical layers to achieve said required quality of service.

15. The system according to claim 14, wherein said plurality of available physical layers comprise cellular, Bluetooth, ZigBee, WLAN, and/or WiMAX.

16. The system according to claim 14, wherein said plurality of available physical layers comprises a plurality of transmission power levels.

17. The system according to claim 14, wherein said resources and/or capabilities in said wireless mobile communication device comprise power availability in said wireless mobile communication device.

18. The system according to claim 14, wherein said at least one processor enables dynamically re-selecting at least one of said plurality of available physical layers during said communication of data to achieve and/or maintain said required quality of service.

19. The system according to claim 14, wherein said at least one processor enables selecting deadlines that enable switching among said plurality of available physical layers to achieve and/or maintain said quality of service during said communication of data.

The system according to claim 19, wherein said at least one processor enables switching between transmission power levels after expiration of one of said deadlines, wherein the new transmission power level utilized after the expiration of said one of said deadlines is higher than the transmission power level utilized prior to the expiration of said one of said deadlines.

21. The system according to claim 19, wherein said at least one processor enables switching between wireless technologies after expiration of one of said deadlines, wherein the wireless technology utilized after the expiration of said one of said deadlines enables improved reliability and/or performance than the wireless technology utilized prior to the expiration of said one of said deadlines.

22. The system according to claim 14, wherein said at least one processor enables altering a size of said data prior to said communication to achieve said required quality of service.

23. The system according to claim 22, wherein said at least one processor enables reducing or increasing a size of said data prior to communication to achieve said required quality of service.

24. The system according to claim 22, wherein said at least one processor enables utilizing one or more encoding schemes to achieve said reduction of size of said data prior to said communication.

25. The system according to claim 24, wherein said at least one processor enables dynamically re-encoding said encoded data with a new encoding scheme to achieve said reduction of size of said data prior to said communication.

26. The system according to claim 14, wherein said at least one processor enables selecting at least one of said plurality of available physical layers based on content and/or type of said data.
