Abstract

A multi-layered wound dressing includes a moisture-retaining portion for enhancing the healing of a wound. The wound dressing includes an intermediate layer that has both water soluble and water insoluble fibers. An apparatus that includes a cutting tool and a reservoir of liquid to pre-moisten a portion of the dressing may be used to manufacture the dressings.

Claims

28. A customized wound dressing, comprising:

first and second layers disposed one above the other and adapted for treatment-wise engaging with a pre-identified wound, wherein the first layer has a first thickness and is formed of a liquid absorbing material that is at least partially hydrophilic; and

a water repellant barrier extending between adjacent first and second portions of the first layer, and extending through at least the first thickness of the first layer so as to block water or an aqueous solution from passing between the adjacent first and second portions of the first layer.

29. The wound dressing of claim 28, wherein the water repellant barrier circumscribes the second portion.

30. The wound dressing of claim 29, wherein the second portion contains an absorbed liquid.

31. The wound dressing of claim 29, wherein the second portion is configured to absorb an exudate of the pre-identified wound.

32. The wound dressing of claim 29, wherein the circumscribed second portion aligns with a non-peripheral area of the pre-identified wound.

33. The wound dressing of claim 32, further comprising an adhesive disposed on the first portion where the first portion is dimensioned to align with a peripheral skin area of the pre-identified wound.

34. The wound dressing of claim 28, wherein the water repellant barrier is comprised of an oil-based substance.

35. The wound dressing of claim 28, wherein the water repellant barrier is comprised of a mineral oil.

36. The wound dressing of claim 28, wherein the water repellant barrier is comprised of a hydrophobic solution, gel, or paste.

37. The wound dressing of claim 28, wherein the water repellant barrier extends into the second layer.

38. The wound dressing of claim 28, wherein the first portion is dimensioned for alignment with an area of skin surrounding the pre-identified wound.

39. The wound dressing of claim 28, further comprising an intermediate layer disposed between the first and second layers and formed of a first fibrous material that is water-soluble and a second fibrous material that is water-insoluble, wherein the water repellant barrier extends into the intermediate layer.

40. The wound dressing of claim 28, further comprising a moisturizing substance absorbed into at least one part of the first layer.

41. An apparatus for fabricating a wound dressing corresponding to a pre-identified wound, the apparatus comprising:

a first dispenser for dispensing a strip of material including wound dressing material; and

a second dispenser for selectively dispensing a first liquid including a water repellant substance onto a selected portion of the wound dressing material.

42. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the water repellant substance includes at least one of an oil-based substance such as mineral oil, a hydrophobic solution, a hydrophobic gel, and a hydrophobic paste.

43. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the second dispenser pours or injects the first liquid having the water repellent substance into a portion of the dispensed strip of material corresponding to an area of said defined wound.

44. The apparatus of claim 43, wherein the second dispenser is coupled to an x-y positioning mechanism that provides relative variable positioning between a liquid dispensing portion of the second dispenser and a portion of the dispensed strip of material.

45. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the second dispenser pours or injects the first liquid having the water repellant substance onto and through a portion of an inner layer and a portion of an intermediate layer of the wound dressing material.

46. The apparatus of claim 41, further comprising:

a third dispenser for selectively dispensing a moisturizing substance onto the wound dressing material.

47. The apparatus of claim 46, further comprising:

an x-y positioning mechanism that provides relative variable positioning between a liquid dispensing portion of the third dispenser and a portion of the dispensed strip of material so as to enable selective dispensing of the moisturizing substance within a moisture-retaining portion circumscribed by the water repellant substance.

48. The apparatus of claim 41, further comprising:

a third dispenser for selectively dispensing an adhesive onto a peripheral area outside an area circumscribed by the water repellant substance on a portion of the wound dressing material, the peripheral area being for alignment with skin surrounding a wound.

49. A method of manufacturing a custom wound dressing corresponding to a pre-identified wound, the method comprising:

dispensing a strip of material having a layer of wound dressing material; and

subdividing a portion of the dispensed strip of material into adjacent first and second portions of the layer by forming a water repellant barrier between the first and second portions so as to block water or an aqueous solution from passing therebetween.

50. The method of claim 49, wherein the water repellant barrier circumscribes the second portion.

51. The method of claim 50, further comprising providing a moisturizing substance within the second portion.

52. The method of claim 50, further comprising dispensing adhesive onto a peripheral area outside the second portion, the peripheral area for alignment with skin surrounding a wound.

53. The method of claim 49, wherein the water repellant barrier is poured or injected onto and through a portion of an inner layer of the wound dressing material.

54. The method of claim 49, wherein the water repellant barrier is poured or injected onto and through a portion of an inner layer and a portion of an intermediate layer of the wound dressing material.

55. A method of treating an identified wound with a custom wound dressing that is custom fabricated for the identified wound, the method comprising:

providing the wound dressing as including a first liquid absorbing layer formed of a material that is at least partially hydrophilic, and including a water repellant barrier that divides the first liquid absorbing layer into first and second adjacent regions such that water or another aqueous solution cannot pass from the first region to the second region;

aligning the wound dressing over the wound such that the water repellant barrier aligns with a predefined section of the wound; and

attaching the aligned wound dressing to the wound.

56. The method of claim 55 wherein said aligning includes aligning the water repellant barrier to be positioned between an exudating portion of the wound and skin surrounding the wound.

57. The method of claim 55 wherein said attaching includes adhering a dry portion of the wound dressing to dry skin.

58. The method of claim 55, further comprising:

providing a reference mark on an arm;

providing an alignment mark on the wound dressing; and

aligning the alignment mark to the reference mark to apply the wound dressing onto the arm.
