Abstract

A system, method and various user interfaces provide an embedded web-based video player for navigating video playlists and playing video content. A website publisher can create and store a video player with customized parameters (e.g., player type, appearance, advertising options, etc.) and can associate the player with a playlist of selected videos. The stored video player is associated with a player ID in a player database and can be embedded in a website using an embed code referencing the player ID. A user interface for the embedded player provides controls for controlling video playback and for controlling the selection of a video from the playlist.

Claims

1. A method for creating a customized video player, the method comprising:

receiving from a requester at least one player parameter, each player parameter specifying a characteristic of a video player, and wherein one of the received player parameters identifies a playlist;

generating a player identifier, the player identifier associated with a video player having the characteristics specified by the received player parameters;

storing the player identifier and the received player parameters; and

providing to the requester the player identifier.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the player identifier forms part of a uniform resource locator.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the player identifier is included in an embed tag.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving from a second requester the player identifier;

providing, in response to the received player identifier, the player parameters associated with the player identifier.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein providing the player parameters further comprises providing content associated with the identified playlist.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the content associated with the identified playlist includes at least one video.

7. The method of claim 5 wherein the content associated with the identified playlist includes at least one audio file.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving from the requester the player identifier;

receiving from the requester a new player parameter; and

associating the new player parameter with the player identifier.

9. The method of claim 8 further comprising:

receiving from a second requester the player identifier; and

providing, in response to the received player identifier, the player parameters associated with the player identifier, the provided player parameters including the new player parameter.

10. The method of claim 8 wherein the new player parameter replaces a player parameter already associated with the player identifier.

11. The method of claim 8 wherein receiving from the requester the player identifier further comprises:

providing to the requester indicia of player identifiers generated based on player parameters provided by the requestor; and

receiving from the requester a selection of one of the provided indicia.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the received player parameters include a player name.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the received player parameters include a player description.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the received player parameters include a color theme.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the received player parameters specify a player type.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the player type is a standard player.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein the player type is a full-size player.

18. The method of claim 15 wherein the player type is a leaderboard player.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein a plurality of videos are associated with the requestor, and the playlist includes all of the videos associated with the requester.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein a plurality of videos are associated with the requestor, and the playlist includes a subset of the videos associated with the requester.

21. The method of claim 1 wherein the received player parameters include advertising preferences.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein the advertising preferences indicate a region of the video player for displaying advertisements.

23. A system for creating a customized video player, the system comprising:

a player creation module, adapted to receive from a publisher at least one player parameter specifying a characteristic of a video player, wherein one of the received player parameters identifies a playlist, and wherein the player creation module is further adapted to generate a player identifier associated with the received player parameters and to provide the generated player identifier to the publisher; and

a player database, coupled to the player creation module, adapted to store the generated player identifier and associated player parameters.

24. The system of claim 23 further comprising:

a publisher account database, coupled to the player creation module, adapted to store an association between the publisher and the player identifier.

25. The system of claim 23, wherein the player identifier forms part of a uniform resource locator.

26. The system of claim 23, wherein the player identifier is included in an embed tag.

27. The system of claim 23, further comprising a network interface adapted to receive the player parameters from the publisher, and to provide the player identifier to the publisher.

28. The system of claim 27 wherein the network interface is further adapted to receive the player identifier from a client, and to provide the player parameters associated with the player identifier to the client.

29. The system of claim 28, further comprising a video server coupled to the network interface, adapted to receive from the client a request for a video and to respond to the request by providing the video.

30. The system of claim 29 further comprising a video database coupled to the video server, and wherein the video server is adapted to provide the video to the client from the video database.

31. The system of claim 23 further comprising a playlist database, adapted to store a plurality of playlists and, for each playlist, a set of content associated with the playlist.

32. The system of claim 31 wherein the content is video content.

33. The system of claim 23, wherein the player creation module is further adapted to:

receive the player identifier and a new player parameter from the publisher, and to associate the new player parameter with the player identifier in the player database.

34. The system of claim 33, further comprising a network interface adapted to receive the player identifier from a client, and to provide the player parameters associated with the player, including the new player parameter, to the client.

35. The system of claim 33, wherein the new player parameter replaces a player parameter already associated with the player identifier.

36. The system of claim 23, wherein the received player parameters include a player name.

37. The system of claim 23 wherein the received player parameters include a player description.

38. The system of claim 23 wherein the received player parameters include a color theme.

39. The system of claim 23 wherein the received player parameters specify a player type.

40. The system of claim 39 wherein the player type is a standard player.

41. The system of claim 39 wherein the player type is a full-size player.

42. The system of claim 39 wherein the player type is a leaderboard player.

43. The system of claim 23 wherein the received player parameters include advertising preferences.

44. The method of claim 43 wherein the advertising preferences indicate a region of the video player for displaying advertisements.

45. A computer program product having a computer readable storage medium and including computer executable code for creating a customized video player, the code adapted to perform steps comprising:

receiving from a requester at least one player parameter, each player parameter specifying a characteristic of a video player, and wherein one of the received player parameters identifies a playlist;

generating a player identifier, the player identifier associated with a video player having the characteristics specified by the received player parameters;

storing the player identifier and the received player parameters; and

providing to the requester the player identifier.

46. The computer program product of claim 45, wherein the player identifier forms part of a uniform resource locator.

47. The computer program product of claim 45, wherein the player identifier is included in an embed tag.

48. The computer program product of claim 45, further comprising:

receiving from a second requester the player identifier;

providing, in response to the received player identifier, the player parameters associated with the player identifier.

49. The computer program product of claim 48 wherein providing the player parameters further comprises providing content associated with the identified playlist.

50. The computer program product of claim 49 wherein the content associated with the identified playlist includes at least one video.

51. The computer program product of claim 49 wherein the content associated with the identified playlist includes at least one audio file.

52. The computer program product of claim 45 further comprising:

receiving from the requester the player identifier;

receiving from the requester a new player parameter; and

associating the new player parameter with the player identifier.

53. The computer program product of claim 52 further comprising:

receiving from a second requester the player identifier; and

providing, in response to the received player identifier, the player parameters associated with the player identifier, the provided player parameters including the new player parameter.

54. The computer program product of claim 52 wherein the new player parameter replaces a player parameter already associated with the player identifier.

55. The computer program product of claim 52 wherein receiving from the requester the player identifier further comprises:

providing to the requester indicia of player identifiers generated based on player parameters provided by the requestor; and

receiving from the requester a selection of one of the provided indicia.

56. The computer program product of claim 45 wherein the received player parameters include a player name.

57. The computer program product of claim 45 wherein the received player parameters include a player description.

58. The computer program product of claim 45 wherein the received player parameters include a color theme.

64. The method of claim 45 wherein a plurality of videos are associated with the requestor, and the playlist includes a subset of the videos associated with the requestor.

66. The computer program product of claim 65 wherein the advertising preferences indicate a region of the video player for displaying advertisements.
