Abstract

An interactive system for playing audio. The system comprises an article having a position-coding pattern and a plurality of different print elements printed thereon; an optical sensor for reading a portion of the position-coding pattern; a processor coupled to the optical sensor for determining a position using the read portion of the position-coding pattern; a computer system configured for identifying an audio data file using the position determined by the processor; and an audio output device for playing an audio output corresponding to the identified audio data file.

Claims

1. An interactive system comprising:

an article having a position-coding pattern and a plurality of different print elements printed thereon, each print element corresponding to a different audio output;

an optical sensor for reading a portion of the position-coding pattern;

a processor coupled to the optical sensor for determining a position using the read portion of the position-coding pattern;

a computer system configured for identifying an audio data file using the position determined by the processor, said computer system having a memory storing audio data files for respective audio outputs, each audio data file being indexed with at least one position; and

an audio output device for playing an audio output corresponding to the identified audio data file.

2. The interactive system of claim 1 wherein the article comprises one or more sheets of paper.

3. The interactive system of claim 1 wherein the position-coding pattern comprises a plurality of dots.

4. The interactive system of claim 1, wherein said position-coding pattern is infrared-absorptive.

5. The interactive system of claim 1, wherein the position-coding pattern identifies a plurality of positions on the article.

6. The interactive system of claim 1, wherein the position-coding pattern identifies an identity of the article.

7. The interactive system of claim 1 wherein the different audio outputs comprise different music outputs associated with the print elements.

8. The interactive system of claim 1, further comprising an actuator to enable a user to activate the optical sensor.

9. The interactive system of claim 1, wherein said actuator is configured to actuate the optical sensor when a nib is operatively contacted with said article.

10. The interactive system of claim 9 wherein the actuator is selected from the group comprising:

a button, a switch, and a force sensor.

11. The interactive system of claim 1, where at least said optical sensor, said processor and said audio output device are contained in a handheld device.

12. The interactive system of claim 11, wherein said handheld device has the form of a pen.

13. The interactive system of claim 1, wherein at least one print element is a visual representation of the corresponding audio output.
