Abstract

A method a system for automatically controlling an adaptive interleaver involves monitoring performance parameters of a transmission system and controlling the adaptive interleaver in response to the performance parameters. The SNR and the data rate of the transmission system are preferably determined. The data rate is analyzed and the adaptive interleaver is adjusted in response to the data rate and the SNR. Alternatively, the BER and the data rate of the transmission system are determined. The data rate is analyzed and the adaptive interleaver is adjusted in response to the data rate and the BER. Alternatively, any one of the SNR, BER or data rate can alone be monitored and used to the adaptive interleaver. The system provides a effective system for adjusting an adaptive interleaver in response to performance parameters of a transmission system.

Claims

1. A controller for an adaptive interleaver comprising:

a processor that is operative to;

analyze a bit error rate of a transmission channel,

analyze a data rate of the transmission channel, and

generate a control signal based on the analysis of the bit error rate and the data rate of the transmission channel.

2. The controller of claim 1, where in the processor is further operative to:

determine the bit error rate of the transmission channel.

3. The controller of claim 1, wherein the processor is further operative to:

determine the data rate of the transmission channel.

4. The controller of claim 1, wherein the control signal is an analog signal.

5. The controller of claim 1, wherein the control signal is a digital signal.

6. The controller of claim 1, wherein the signal controls an interleave depth.

7. The controller of claim 1, wherein the processor is further operative to determine a signal power based on a maximum amplitude deviation and a maximum phase of data received via the transmission channel.

8. The controller of claim 1, wherein the processor is further operative to determine a noise power based on an amplitude distance and a phase difference between adjacent points in a modulation constellation.

9. The controller of claim 1, wherein the processor is further operative to determine whether the bit error rate exceeds a threshold.

10. The controller of claim 1, wherein the processor is further operative to determine whether the data rate exceeds a threshold.

11. The controller of claim 1, wherein the processor is coupled with an adaptive interleaver operative to receive the control signal and to alter an interleaved signal based on the control signal.

12. The controller of claim 1, wherein the processor is coupled with an adaptive interleaver operative to receive the control signal and to alter an interleave depth based on the control signal.

13. A computer-readable storage medium comprising a set of instructions for controlling an adaptive interleaver, the set of instructions to direct a processor to perform acts of:

analyzing a bit error rate of a transmission channel;

analyzing a data rate of the transmission channel; and

generating a control signal based on the analysis of the bit error rate and the data rate of the transmission channel.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, further comprising a set of instructions to direct a processor to perform acts of:

detecting the bit error rate of the transmission channel.

15. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, further comprising a set of instructions to direct a processor to perform acts of:

detecting the data rate of the transmission channel.

16. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the control signal controls an interleave depth.

17. A method for controlling an adaptive interleaver, the method comprising:

analyzing a bit error rate of a transmission channel;

analyzing a data rate of the transmission channel; and

generating a control signal based on the analysis of the bit error rate and the data rate of the transmission channel.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

detecting the bit error rate of the transmission channel.

19. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

detecting the data rate of the transmission channel.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein the control signal controls an interleave depth.
