1. A receiver, comprising:
- a convolutional decoder configured to receive a stream of trellis symbols assigned to a plurality of tones, the convolutional decoder further configured to decode a plurality of interleaved data bits from the stream of trellis symbols; and
a bit orderer configured to receive the plurality of interleaved data bits, the bit orderer further configured to assign the plurality of interleaved data bits to at least a first plurality of ordered data bits and a second plurality of ordered data bits.

Abstract
A tone ordered discrete multitone interleaver system and method, including a tone ordered interleaver and deinterleaver, are provided for efficiently communicating data despite noise affecting a Discrete Multitone modulation (DMT) system. The tone ordered discrete multitone interleaver forces interleaving of trellis encoded information by assigning a different number of bits to adjacent tones or adjacent tone pairs.

9. A receiver, comprising:
-
means for convolutionally decoding a plurality of trellis symbols to produce a first plurality of bits associated with at least a first tone specified in an ordered bit table and a second plurality of bits associated with at least a second tone specified in the ordered bit table; and means for ordering the first plurality of bits and the second plurality of bits based upon the ordered bit table, the second tone separated in the ordered bit table by M tones from the first tone, where M is greater than 1. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15)
