Abstract

A stem cell which is obtainable from the non-embryonic tissue isolated from the dental follicle of tooth or wisdom tooth which are able to differentiate into a periodontal ligament like membrane structure.

32. A stem cell obtainable from the non-embryonic tissue isolated from the dental follicle of a tooth or wisdom tooth and capable of self-renewal and differentiating in vitro.

33. The stem cell of claim 32 capable of differentiating into cells of endodermal, ectodermal, or mesodermal lineages.

34. The stem cell according to claim 32 capable of differentiating into a periodontal ligament structure.

35. The stem cell according to claim 32 capable of differentiating into a mineralised tissue structure.

36. A mesenchymal stem cell obtainable from the stem cell of claim 32.

37. A culture comprising:

a) stem cells according to claim 32 and

b)₁ a medium capable of supporting the proliferation of the stem cells or

b)₂ a medium capable of supporting the differentiation of the stem cells into cells building a biological membrane with blood vessel or other vascular vessels.

38. The culture of claim 37, further comprising a proliferation factor or lineage commitment factor.

39. A method of isolating a stem cell according to claim 32, comprising the steps of obtaining cells from a dental sac (dental follicle) and culturing the cells

40. A pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of cellular debilitation, derangement and/or dysfunction in mammals, comprising:

a therapeutically effective amount of stem cells according to claim 32, or cells or tissues derived therefrom; and

a pharmaceutically acceptable medium or carrier.

41. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 40 further comprising a proliferation factor or lineage-commitment factor.

42. A stem cell obtainable from the non-embryonic tissue isolated from the dental follicle surrounding the epithelial enamel organ of a tooth or wisdom tooth and capable of self-renewal and differentiatiaion in vitro.
