Abstract

A self-configuring mobile telecommunication base station is disclosed. A communication interface is configured to connect to an access network other than a mobile telecommunication network with which the base station is associated. A processor coupled to the communication interface is configured to establish a connection, at least in part via the access network, to an element associated with the mobile telecommunication network; receive via the access network an initialization data; and use the initialization data to configure the base station to provide access to mobile telecommunication services at least in part using a resource determined based at least in part on the initialization data.

Claims

1. A mobile telecommunication base station, comprising:

a communication interface configured to connect to an access network other than a mobile telecommunication network with which the base station is associated; and

a processor coupled to the communication interface and configured to;

establish a connection, at least in part via the access network, to an element associated with the mobile telecommunication network;

receive via the access network an initialization data; and

use the initialization data to configure the base station to provide access to mobile telecommunication services at least in part using a resource determined based at least in part on the initialization data.

2. The mobile telecommunication base station of claim 1, wherein the resource comprises one or more of the following:

a radio frequency;

a radio channel;

a code group;

a scrambling code;

a location area code (LAC);

a cell identifier (CI); and

a base station identifier code (BSIC).

3. The mobile telecommunication base station of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to send to the element a unique identifier associated uniquely with the base station.

4. The mobile telecommunication base station of claim 3, wherein the mobile telecommunication network element, or another node associated with the element, is configured to select the initialization data based at least in part on the unique identifier.

5. The mobile telecommunication base station of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to auto-discover the element associated with the mobile telecommunication network.

6. The mobile telecommunication base station of claim 1, wherein the resource comprises a code group and the processor is further configured to selecting a scrambling code included in the code group at least in part by performing an operational test using the scrambling code.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein assigning the resource includes mapping the identifier to a routing zone and using the routing zone to select the resource.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising updating the base station configuration data store to associate the resource with the identifier.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising gathering, at a point of sale at which the base station is sold or otherwise provided to an end user, one or more of a customer premises address;

a customer identifier usable to determine a customer premises address; and

for each of one or more authorized users of the base station an identifier usable to provide access to use of the base station by that authorized user.

7. A method for configuring a mobile telecommunication base station, comprising:

establishing a connection, at least in part via an access network other than a mobile telecommunication network with which the base station is associated, to an element associated with the mobile telecommunication network;

receiving via the access network an initialization data; and

using the initialization data to configure the base station to provide access to mobile telecommunication services at least in part using a resource determined based at least in part on the initialization data.

8. A computer program product for configuring a mobile telecommunication base station, the computer program product being embodied in a computer readable storage medium and comprising computer instructions for:

establishing a connection, at least in part via an access network other than a mobile telecommunication network with which the base station is associated, to an element associated with the mobile telecommunication network;

receiving via the access network an initialization data; and

using the initialization data to configure the base station to provide access to mobile telecommunication services at least in part using a resource determined based at least in part on the initialization data.

9. A method for configuring a mobile telecommunication base station, comprising:

bulk configuring a base station configuration data store that includes one or more sets each including one or more mobile telecommunication resources available to be assigned to requesting mobile telecommunication base stations;

receiving from a mobile telecommunication base station an identifier associated with the mobile telecommunication base station; and

associating with the mobile telecommunication base station a resource determined, based at least in part on the bulk configured base station configuration data store and the identifier, to be available and suitable for use by the mobile telecommunication base station.

13. A system for configuring a mobile telecommunication base station, comprising:

a communication interface configured to communicate with the mobile telecommunication base station via an access network other than a mobile telecommunication network with which the base station is associated; and

a processor configured to;

receive from the base station via the communication interface a mobile telecommunication base station an identifier associated with the base station; and

associate with the base station a resource determined, based at least in part on a bulk configured base station configuration data store and the identifier, to be available and suitable for use by the mobile telecommunication base station;

wherein the bulk configured base station configuration data store includes one or more sets each including one or more mobile telecommunication resources available to be assigned to requesting mobile telecommunication base stations.

14. A computer program product for configuring a mobile telecommunication base station, the computer program product being embodied in a computer readable storage medium and comprising computer instructions for:

receiving from a mobile telecommunication base station an identifier associated with the mobile telecommunication base station; and

associating with the mobile telecommunication base station a resource determined, based at least in part on the bulk configured base station configuration data store and the identifier, to be available and suitable for use by the mobile telecommunication base station;

wherein the bulk configured base station configuration data store includes one or more sets each including one or more mobile telecommunication resources available to be assigned to requesting mobile telecommunication base stations.
