Abstract

Piggybacked acknowledgement/non-acknowledgement (PAN) bits in unreliable bit positions of a modulated symbol are swapped with data bits located in more reliable bit positions. In addition, a power offset value may be applied to the symbols containing the PAN bits.

Claims

1. A method of transmitting a radio block comprising piggybacked acknowledgement/non-acknowledgement (PAN) bits in a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), the method comprising:

receiving a stream of bits for transmission, the stream of bits including data bits and PAN bits;

interleaving the stream of bits to create an interleaved stream of bits; and

modulating the stream of bits to create a plurality of symbols, each symbol representing a plurality of bits and having a least significant bit (LSB) position;

wherein no PAN bits are present in the LSB position of each of the plurality of symbols.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the modulating the stream of bits is performed using eight phase shift keying (8PSK) modulation.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the modulating the stream of bits is performed using sixteen quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM).

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the modulating the stream of bits is performed using thirty two quadrature amplitude modulation (32-QAM).

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the PAN bits are located proximate to a training sequence.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the interleaving and modulating results in PAN bits representing a most significant bit of a symbol.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

applying a power offset value to a transmission power associated with each bit of the stream of bits.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the stream of bits further includes header bits, stealing flags, training sequence bits, and uplink state flag bits.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the applied power offset value is based on a type of bit of the bit stream.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the power offset value is calculated by the WTRU.

11. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

receiving a message containing the power offset value from a base station.

12. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) for transmitting a radio block comprising piggybacked acknowledgement/non-acknowledgement (PAN) bits, the WTRU comprising:

a processor configured to generate a bit stream for transmission, the stream of bits including data bits and PAN bits;

an interleaver configured to interleave the stream of bits to create an interleaved stream of bits;

a modulator configured to modulate the interleaved stream of bits to create a plurality of symbols, each symbol representing a plurality of bits and having a least significant bit (LSB) position;

wherein no PAN bits are present in the LSB position of each of the plurality of symbols.

13. The WTRU of claim 12, wherein the modulator is further configured to modulate the stream of bits using eight phase shift keying (8PSK) modulation.

14. The WTRU of claim 12, wherein the modulator is further configured to modulate the stream of bits using sixteen quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM).

15. The WTRU of claim 12, wherein the modulator is further configured to modulate the stream of bits using thirty two quadrature amplitude modulation (32-QAM).

16. The WTRU of claim 12, wherein the PAN bits are located proximate to a training sequence.

17. The WTRU of claim 12, wherein PAN bits are present in a most significant bit position of a symbol.

18. The WTRU of claim 12, further comprising:

a transmitter configured to apply a power offset value to a transmission power associated with each bit of the stream of bits.

19. The WTRU of claim 18, wherein the stream of bits further includes header bits, stealing flags, training sequence bits, and uplink state flag bits.

20. The WTRU of claim 19, wherein the applied power offset value is based on a type of bit of the bit stream.

21. The WTRU of claim 18, further comprising:

a processor configured to calculate the power offset value.

22. The WTRU of claim 18, further comprising:

a receiver configured to receive a message containing the power offset value from a base station.
