Abstract

A system for wireless data transmission that uses a channel bandwidth, channel separation, and radio frequency power spectrum which is compatible with existing deployments of wireless voice services. The transmitted waveforms are thus compatible with existing cellular networks. However, the time domain digital coding, modulation, and power control schemes are optimized for data transmission. Existing cellular network sites can thus be used to provide a high speed service optimized for wireless data traffic without the need for new radio frequency planning, and without interfering with existing voice service deployments.

Claims

1. A code division multiple access (CDMA) subscriber unit comprising:

circuitry configured to receive a first and second channel, wherein the first channel being substantially continuous and carrying traffic data and the second channel carrying control information associated with a third channel; and

circuitry configured to receive a third channel in response to the received control information;

wherein the third channel carries substantially packet data and the third channel being received over differing numbers of simultaneous CDMA channels.

2. The CDMA subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the first channel is a quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) channel.

3. The CDMA subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the second channel carries modulation information associated with the third channel.

4. The CDMA subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the second channel carries data rate information associated with the third channel.

5. The CDMA subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the third channel having a varying number of CDMA channels based on demand.

6. The CDMA subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the third channel is received in a first time interval, not being received in a second consecutive time interval and being received in a third consecutive time interval.

7. The CDMA subscriber unit of claim 1, circuitry configured to receive a substantially continuous pilot channel.

8. The CDMA subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the first channel carries voice data.

9. The CDMA subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the CDMA subscriber unit is a Wideband-CDMA (W-CDMA) Frequency division duplex (FDD) subscriber unit and the third channel is a high speed channel.

10. The CDMA subscriber unit of claim 1, comprising an antenna configured to receive a wireless signal including the first, second and third channels.

11. The CDMA subscriber unit of claim 1, comprising circuitry configured to transmit a fourth channel, the fourth channel being a quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) channel.

12. The CDMA subscriber unit of claim 11, wherein the fourth channel comprises pilot bits.

13. The CDMA subscriber unit of claim 1, wherein the third channel is received in a first time interval over a first number of substantially simultaneous CDMA channels and in a second time interval over a second number of substantially simultaneous CDMA channels, the first time interval being different than the second time interval.

14. A method for use by a code division multiple access (CDMA) subscriber unit, the method comprising:

receiving a first channel and a second channel;

wherein the first channel being substantially continuous and carrying traffic data and the second channel carrying control information associated with a third channel; and

receiving a third channel in response to the received control information;

wherein the third channel carries substantially packet data and the third channel being received over differing numbers of simultaneous CDMA channels.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the first channel is a quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) channel.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the second channel carries modulation information associated with the third channel.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein the second channel carries data rate information associated with the third channel.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein the third channel having a varying number of CDMA channels based on demand.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein the third channel is received in a first time interval, not being received in a second consecutive time interval and being received in a third consecutive time interval.

20. The method of claim 14, comprising:

receiving a substantially continuous pilot channel.

21. The method of claim 14, wherein the first channel carries voice data.

22. The method of claim 14, wherein the CDMA subscriber unit is a Wideband-CDMA (W-CDMA) Frequency division duplex (FDD) subscriber unit and the third channel is a high speed channel.

23. The method of claim 14, wherein the first, second and third channels are received as a wireless signal over an antenna.

24. The method of claim 14, comprising transmitting a fourth channel, the fourth channel being a quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) channel.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the fourth channel comprises pilot bits.

26. The method of claim 14, wherein the third channel is received in a first time interval over a first number of substantially simultaneous CDMA channels and in a second time interval over a second number of substantially simultaneous CDMA channels, the first time interval being different than the second time interval
