Abstract

An infusion device for continuously infusion of medication is disclosed, in which infusion is controlled over two separate fluid communications. The infusion is in each fluid communication controlled by restricting means and valve means, and one of the fluid communications further contains a holding device for bolus rate of infusion for a short period. The device comprises a flow regulating device comprising a passage defined by at least a fact element is a primary deformable element adapted to be elastically deformed so as to change the cross sectional area of the passage. Furthermore the device comprises a container for storage and supply of a medication in fluid form, said container comprising a first and a second chamber being arranged relatively to each other so that when volume of the first chamber increases the volume of the second chamber decreases.

37. An infusion device comprising:

a pressure jacket defining a first storage compartment;

a first fluid path in fluidic communication with the first storage compartment;

a detection device for monitoring a flow of a fluid in the first fluid path;

a second fluid path in fluidic communication with the first storage compartment;

a second storage compartment in fluidic communication with the second fluid path; and

an outlet in fluidic communication with the first flow path and the second fluid path.

38. The infusion device of claim 37, wherein the first storage compartment comprises a substantially constant pressure source.

39. The infusion device of claim 37 further comprising a first flow restrictor in the first fluid path.

40. The infusion device of claim 39 further comprising a second flow restrictor in the first fluid path.

41. The infusion device of claim 40 wherein the detection device is located between the first flow restrictor and the second flow restrictor.

42. The infusion device of claim 37 wherein the detection device comprises a pressure sensor.

43. The infusion device of claim 42 wherein the pressure sensor comprises a membrane.

44. The infusion device of claim 43 wherein the pressure sensor further comprises a deflection detector for detecting a deflection of the membrane.

45. The infusion device of claim 37 further comprising a flow restrictor in the second fluid path upstream of the second storage compartment.

46. The infusion device of claim 37 further comprising a detection device for monitoring a flow of a fluid in the second fluid path.

47. The infusion device of claim 46 wherein the detection device comprises a pressure sensor.

48. The infusion device of claim 47 wherein the pressure sensor comprises a membrane.

49. The infusion device of claim 48 wherein the pressure sensor further comprises a deflection detector for detecting a deflection of the membrane.

50. The infusion device of claim 39 further comprising a valve in the first fluid path, upstream of the first flow restrictor.

51. The infusion device of claim 46 wherein the valve is adjustable.

52. The infusion device of claim 37 further comprising a valve in the second fluid path, downstream of the second storage chamber.

53. The infusion device of claim 52 wherein the valve is adjustable.

54. The infusion device of claim 53 wherein the first fluid path is parallel to the second fluid path.

55. A method for administering fluid medication, the method comprising the steps of:

providing an infusion device comprising;

a pressure jacket defining a first storage compartment;

a first fluid path in fluidic communication with the first storage compartment; and

an outlet in fluidic communication with the first fluid path and the second fluid path;

filling the first storage compartment with the fluid medication;

passively releasing a dose of medication via the first fluid path; and

monitoring a flow of the fluid medication in the first fluid path.

56. The method of claim 55, wherein the infusion device further comprises:

a second fluid path in fluidic communication with the first storage compartment; and

a second storage compartment in fluidic communication with the second fluid path.

57. The method of claim 55, further comprising the step of actively releasing a dose of medication via the second fluid path.

58. The method of claim 56 wherein the actively releasing step comprises opening a valve in the second fluid path downstream the second storage compartment.

59. The method of claim 56, further comprising the step of applying a pressure to the first storage compartment to refill the second storage compartment.

60. The method of claim 55 further comprising the step of calibrating a flow of medication through the first fluid path.

61. The method of claim 56 further comprising the step of monitoring a flow of the fluid medication in the second fluid path.

62. The method of claim 61 wherein the infusion device further comprises, in the first fluid path:

a first flow restrictor;

a second flow restrictor; and

a detection device between the first flow restrictor and the second flow restrictor, wherein the flow is monitored with the detection device.

63. The method of claim 62 wherein the detection device comprises a pressure sensor.

64. The method of claim 63 wherein the pressure sensor comprises a membrane.

65. The method of claim 64 wherein the pressure sensor further comprises a deflection detector for detecting a deflection of the membrane.

66. The method of claim 61 wherein the infusion device further comprises a detection device in the second fluid path, and wherein the flow is monitored with the detection device.

67. The method of claim 55 wherein the fluid medication comprises a substance selected from the group consisting of insulin, hormones, and anti-inflammatoric medication.

68. A method for administering fluid medication, the method comprising the steps of:

applying an infusion device comprising a pressure jacket defining a first storage compartment to a skin surface;

inserting a cannula subcutaneously to establish a first fluidic connection with the first storage compartment; and

passively releasing subcutaneously a fluid medication from the first storage compartment.

69. The method of claim 68, wherein the pressure jacket exerts a substantially constant pressure against the fluid medication as the fluid medication is released from the first storage compartment.

70. The method of claim 68, further comprising the step of monitoring a flow of the fluid medication from the first storage compartment.

71. The method of claim 68, wherein the infusion device further comprises a second fluidic connection between the first storage device and the cannula, the method further comprising the step of actively releasing subcutaneously the fluid medication from the first storage compartment, via the second fluidic connection.

72. The method of claim 71, wherein the actively releasing step comprises opening a valve.
