Abstract

A communication system 10 including a host device 14 in communication with an external device 40 through a pair of interfaces 48/50. The external device has an application code image module 42 therein. The host device 14 includes an application execution area 66 and a resource application programming interface (API) 60. The host device 14 stores the application code image in the application execution area 66. The application code image controls a function in the host device 14 using the resource application interface. When the function is performed, the application code image may be removed from the host device 14.

Claims

1. A method of performing a function comprising:

coupling an external device to a host device through an interface;

transferring an application code image into the memory of the host device;

executing the code associated with the application code image;

performing the function at the host device; and

removing the application code image after performing the function.

2. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the external device comprises a video game.

3. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the external device comprises a portable media player.

4. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the external device comprises a memory device.

5. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the host device comprises a personal computer coupled to a satellite receiver.

6. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the external device comprises a memory device separate from the external device.

7. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the host device comprises a set top box.

8. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the host device comprises a satellite set top box.

9. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the interface comprises a USB interface.

10. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the interface comprises an Ethernet connection.

11. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the interface comprises a direct connection.

12. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the interface comprises a Bluetooth connection.

13. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the memory comprises an application execution area.

14. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the memory comprises a RAM.

15. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein executing the code comprise storing data in a secure data store.

16. A method as recited in claim 1 further comprising storing application activity in a secure accounting area of the host.

17. A method as recited in claim 1 further comprising performing conditional access authentication of the code image prior to transferring the application.

18. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein performing a function comprises transferring media file from the host to the external device.

19. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the media file comprises an audio file, a video file or a data file.

20. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the code comprises a browser.

21. A method of performing a function comprising:

coupling an external device to a set top box through an interface;

transferring an application code image into an application execution area in the memory of the set top box;

executing the application code associated with the application code image;

performing a function in the set top box through a resource API; and

after performing a function, removing the application code image from the application execution area.

22. A method as recited in claim 21 wherein the interface comprises a USB interface.

23. A method as recited in claim 21 wherein the interface comprises an Ethernet connection.

24. A method as recited in claim 21 wherein the interface comprises a direct connection.

25. A method as recited in claim 21 wherein the interface comprises a Bluetooth connection.

26. A system comprising:

an external device having an application code image therein and a first interface;

a host device in communication with the external device, said host device comprising an application execution area, a resource application programming interface (API), said host device stores the application code image in the application execution area, said code image controlling a function in the host using the resource API.

27. A system as recited in claim 26 wherein the host device comprises an application secure data store storing data in response to the application code image.

28. A system as recited in claim 26 wherein the application code image is removed from the application execution area after performing the function without removing the data in the application secure data store.

29. A system as recited in claim 26 wherein the application code image is removed from the application execution area after performing the function.

30. A system as recited in claim 26 wherein the host device comprises a personal computer coupled to a satellite receiver.

31. A system as recited in claim 26 wherein the external device comprises a separate memory device.

32. A system as recited in claim 26 further comprising a light client coupling the external device to the host device.

33. A system as recited in claim 26 wherein the function comprises transferring a file from the host device to the external device and the light client reformatting the file.
