Abstract

The presently claimed invention relates generally to processing data representing video and audio. One claim recites a method including: obtaining video, the video comprising at least picture portions and audio portions associated with the video; performing a first act of analyzing data representing picture portions of the video or audio portions associated with the video to determine whether the data satisfies first predetermined criteria; and if the data satisfies the first predetermined criteria, performing a second act of analyzing data representing picture portions of the video or audio portions associated with the video to determine whether the data satisfies second predetermined criteria. The first act of analyzing or the second act of analyzing utilizes steganographic decoding. A related claim recites that the first act of analyzing or the second act of analyzing utilizes pattern matching. Another related claim recites that the first act of analyzing or the second act of analyzing derives information from the data representing picture portions of the video. Of course, other claims and combinations are provided as well.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

obtaining video, the video comprising at least picture portions and audio portions associated with the video;

performing a first act of analyzing data representing picture portions of the video or audio portions associated with the video to determine whether the data satisfies first predetermined criteria; and

if the data satisfies the first predetermined criteria,

performing a second act of analyzing data representing picture portions of the video or audio portions associated with the video to determine whether the data satisfies second predetermined criteria,

wherein the first act of analyzing or the second act of analyzing utilizes steganographic decoding.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first act of analyzing or the second act of analyzing utilizes pattern matching.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the first act of analyzing or the second act of analyzing derives information from the data representing picture portions of the video.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the video is obtained from a publicly accessible internet site.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising generating a report when the second predetermined criteria is met, the report including at least an identification of the video.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising generating billing information when the second predetermined criteria is satisfied.

7. A computer readable medium comprising instructions or circuitry to perform the method of claim 1.

8. A computer readable medium comprising instructions or circuitry to perform the method of claim 5.

9. A computer readable medium comprising instructions or circuitry to perform the method of claim 6.

10. A method comprising:

randomly accessing public internet sites to download media content therefrom;

analyzing downloaded media content to derive at least an identifier from data representing video picture element or audio elements;

performing an action based at least on the identifier.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein said act of analyzing utilizes a steganographic decoder.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein said act of analyzing utilizes pattern matching.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein the action comprising generating a report including at least the identifier.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising communicating the report to a remote third party.

15. The method of claim 10 wherein the action comprises generating billing information associated with downloaded content.

16. A computer readable medium comprising instructions or circuitry to perform the method of claim 10.

17. A computer readable medium comprising instructions or circuitry to perform the method of claim 13.

18. A computer readable medium comprising instructions or circuitry to perform the method of claim 15.

19. A method comprising:

receiving first data representing audio-visual content, the audio-visual content comprising a video portion representing video imagery or picture elements and an audio portion;

receiving second data conveyed along with the audio-visual content, the second data being separate from the video portion and the audio portion,

processing at least a portion of the first data to recover information steganographically encoded therein, if any;

making a determination concerning the audio-visual content based at least in part on a result associated with said act processing and the second data.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein said act of processing the first data only processes the video portion.

21. The method of claim 19 wherein said act of processing the first data only processes the audio portion.
