Abstract

A system and method for channel estimation and echo cancellation in wireless system repeaters. A repeater with improved echo cancellation comprises an input radio control element having a receiving antenna and an output radio control element having a transmitting antenna; a power amplifier connected between the input radio control element and the output radio control element; and a signal processing unit connected between the input radio control element and the output radio control element. The signal processing unit is configured to estimate the communication channel from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna to produce a channel estimation. The signal processing unit is further configured to perform echo cancellation based on the channel estimation.

17. For use in a wireless network, a repeater with improved echo cancellation, comprising:

a donor antenna apparatus having a first donor antenna and a second donor antenna;

a server antenna apparatus having a first server antenna and a second server antenna; and

an electronic processing block connected to the donor antenna apparatus and the server antenna apparatus, wherein the second donor antenna is cross-polarized with the first donor antenna, and the second server antenna is cross-polarized with the first server antenna.

18. The repeater of claim 17, wherein the second donor antenna is co-polarized with the first server antenna, and the second server antenna is co-polarized with the first donor antenna.

19. The repeater of claim 17, wherein the electronic processing block includes an echo canceller connected to receive two input signals and to detect the amplitude and time delay of any echo between the two input signals.

20. The repeater of claim 17, wherein the electronic processing block includes a least-means-square echo detector.

21. The repeater of claim 17, wherein the second donor antenna detects one or more time-delayed echo signals transmitted by the first server antenna.

22. The repeater of claim 17, wherein the second server antenna receives one or more time-delayed echo signals transmitted by the first donor antenna.

23. The repeater of claim 17, wherein the first donor antenna is cross-polarized with the first server antenna.

24. For use in a wireless network, a method for improving echo cancellation in a repeater system, comprising:

in a donor antenna apparatus, cross-polarizing a first donor antenna with a second donor antenna;

in a server antenna apparatus, cross-polarizing a first server antenna with a first server antenna; and

connecting the donor antenna apparatus with the server antenna apparatus using an electronic processing block.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the second donor antenna is co-polarized with the first server antenna, and the second server antenna is co-polarized with the first donor antenna.

26. The method of claim 24, wherein the electronic processing block includes an echo canceller connected to receive two input signals and to detect the amplitude and time delay of any echo between the two input signals.

27. The method of claim 24, wherein the electronic processing block includes a least-means-square echo detector.

28. The method of claim 24, further comprising:

detecting one or more time-delayed echo signals transmitted by the first server antenna using the second donor antenna.

29. The method of claim 24, further comprising:

receiving one or more time-delayed echo signals transmitted by the first donor antenna using the second server antenna.

30. The method of claim 24, wherein the first donor antenna is cross-polarized with the first server antenna.

31. A wireless communication network comprising a plurality of repeaters capable of wireless communication with a plurality of subscriber stations within a coverage area of the network, wherein at least one of the plurality of the repeaters comprises:

a donor antenna apparatus having a first donor antenna and a second donor antenna;

a server antenna apparatus having a first server antenna and a second server antenna; and

an electronic processing block connected to the donor antenna apparatus and the server antenna apparatus, wherein the second donor antenna is cross-polarized with the first donor antenna, and the second server antenna is cross-polarized with the first server antenna.

32. The network of claim 31, wherein the second donor antenna is co-polarized with the first server antenna, and the second server antenna is co-polarized with the first donor antenna.

33. The network of claim 31, wherein the electronic processing block includes an echo canceller connected to receive two input signals and to detect the amplitude and time delay of any echo between the two input signals.

34. The network of claim 31, wherein the electronic processing block includes a least-means-square echo detector.

35. The network of claim 31, wherein the second donor antenna detects one or more time-delayed echo signals transmitted by the first server antenna.

36. The network of claim 31, wherein the second server antenna receives one or more time-delayed echo signals transmitted by the first donor antenna.
