Abstract

A mobile computing device has a radio frequency transceiver and a processing circuit. The radio frequency transceiver is configured to communicate over a wireless network with a remote server. The processing circuit is configured to receive subscribed content from the remote server. The processing circuit is configured to determine a status of at least one local system resource and to determine whether to proceed with accessing the subscribed content based on the status.

Claims

1. A mobile computing device, comprising:

a radio frequency transceiver configured to communicate over a wireless network with a remote server;

a memory;

a display; and

a processing circuit configured to receive subscribed content from the remote server, wherein the processing circuit is configured to determine an availability of the memory and to present to the user an option for accessing the subscribed content, wherein the option presented is based on the availability of the memory.

2. The mobile computing device of claim 1, further comprising a memory port configured to receive a removable memory card comprising the memory.

3. The mobile computing device of claim 2, wherein the availability of the memory comprises whether the removable memory card is present in the memory port.

4. The mobile computing device of claim 1, wherein the availability of the memory comprises whether a predetermined amount of memory is free.

5. The mobile computing device of claim 1, wherein if the predetermined amount of memory is not free, the option presented to the user comprises an option to stream the content.

6. The mobile computing device of claim 1, wherein the option is one of a set of options for accessing the subscribed content, wherein the processing circuit is configured to present a stream option and a download option if the memory is available.

7. The mobile computing device of claim 6, wherein the set of options does not comprise a download option if the memory is not available.

8. The mobile computing device of claim 1, wherein the option for accessing the subscribed content comprises a subscribe option.

9. The mobile computing device of claim 1, wherein the subscribed content comprises a podcast or other enclosed file format in the feed.

10. A mobile computing device, comprising:

a first radio frequency transceiver configured to communicate with a remote server over a wireless local area network;

a second radio frequency transceiver configured to communicate with the remote server over a wireless wide area network;

a display; and

a processing circuit configured in a first mode to download subscribed content from the remote server and in a second mode to stream subscribed content from the remote server, wherein the processing circuit is further configured to select one of the first and second radio frequency transceivers to communicate over the wireless local area 11 network or the wireless wide area network to download or stream the subscribed content from the remote server.

11. The mobile computing device of claim 10, wherein in response to a user selection to stream subscribed content from the remote server, the processing circuit is configured to select the wireless local area network for communication with the remote server.

12. The mobile computing device of claim 10, wherein the processing circuit is configured to communicate over the wireless local area network with the remote server and, if the wireless local area network is unavailable, to communicate over the wireless wide area network with the remote server.

13. The mobile computing device of claim 10, wherein the processing circuit is configured to select one of the first and second radio frequency transceivers for communication with the remote server based on communication speed data stored in a memory for both of the wireless networks.

14. The mobile computing device of claim 10, wherein the processing circuit is configured to present indicia of a download option to download the subscribed content and a stream option to stream the subscribed content, to receive a user selection of one of the stream option and the download option, and to store the user selection.

15. A server computer, comprising:

a data output terminal configured to communicate with a remote mobile computing device over a wireless network; and

a processing circuit configured to receive a user selection of subscribed content to transmit to the mobile computing device, to detect whether the mobile computing device is in an inactive state, and to transmit the subscribed content to the mobile computing device based on the determination of whether the mobile computing device is in an inactive state.

16. The server computer of claim 15, wherein the processing circuit is configured to determine that the mobile computing device is in an inactive state at approximately a time when the processing circuit has completed a data synchronization process with the mobile computing device.

17. The server computer of claim 16, wherein the processing circuit is configured to transmit the subscribed content after the data synchronization during a single communication session.

18. The server computer of claim 15, wherein the processing circuit is configured to determine that the mobile computing device is in an inactive state based on a signal from the mobile computing device indicating the absence of user input for a predetermined period of time.

19. The server computer of claim 15, wherein the processing circuit is configured to receive a request from the mobile computing device to delay transmission of the subscribed content.

20. A mobile computing device, comprising:

a radio frequency transceiver configured to communicate over a wireless network with a remote server; and

a processing circuit configured to receive subscribed content from the remote server, wherein the processing circuit is configured to determine a status of at least one local system resource and to determine whether to proceed with accessing the subscribed content based on the status.

21. The mobile computing device of claim 20, wherein the local system resource comprises a power supply, wherein the status of the power supply indicates whether the power supply is coupled to an external power source, wherein the processing circuit is configured to determine not to proceed with the accessing of the subscribed content if the power supply is not coupled to an external power source.

22. The mobile computing device of claim 20, wherein the local system resource comprises a processor configured to operate an application to be used by the user, wherein the processing circuit is configured to determine not to proceed with the accessing of the subscribed content if the application is in use by the user.

23. The mobile computing device of claim 22, wherein the application uses the radio frequency transceiver for wireless communication.

The mobile computing device of claim 20, wherein the local system resource comprises the radio frequency transceiver, wherein the status of the radio frequency transceiver indicates the availability of a predetermined wireless network operating at a higher speed than another predetermined wireless network, wherein the processing circuit is configured to determine not to proceed with the accessing of the subscribed content if the higher speed wireless network is not available.

The mobile computing device of claim 20, wherein the local system resource is available memory, wherein the status of the available memory indicates whether a predetermined amount of memory allocated for downloads is available, wherein the processing circuit is configured to determine not to proceed with the accessing of the subscribed content if the predetermined amount of memory allocated for downloads is not available.
