Abstract

Temporal qualities of electronic documents are verified using a variety of techniques, including human based feedback. The invention can be used in environments such as automated news aggregators, search engines, and other electronic systems which compile information having temporal qualities.

Claims

1. A method of collecting data from users relating to temporal characteristics of electronic documents within an electronic interface comprising:

a) identifying at least a first event or topic within a first portion of the electronic interface;

b) presenting information on one or more electronic documents containing content directed to said first event or topic within the electronic interface;

c) providing a sorting section within the electronic interface which permits users to express their ranking of temporal characteristics of said one or more electronic documents.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said one or more electronic documents are in a list that is periodically refreshed automatically with new content from additional separate electronic documents.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said one or more electronic documents are in a list that is refreshed automatically and dynamically based on a determination by a computing system that an additional separate electronic document should be included in such list.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said sorting section permits said users to identify a highest ranking electronic document containing content describing a most recent state of said event.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein said sorting section permits said users to arrange said electronic documents in a ranked list.

6. The method of claim 4 wherein said sorting section includes a separate field used to identify a temporal rank of one or more of said electronic documents.

7. The method of claim 4 wherein said electronic interface is presented within a web page that is viewable within a computing system browser, including a browser adapted for a portable computing device.

8. The method of claim 4 wherein said electronic interface includes a separate portion used to identify a community wide temporal rank of said one or more of said electronic documents.

9. The method of claim 4 wherein said electronic interface includes a separate portion adapted to identify a list of users who have contributed a greatest number of rankings within an electronic community for electronic documents.

10. The method of claim 4 wherein said electronic interface includes a separate portion adapted to identify a list of users who have attained a highest accuracy rate in ranking temporal characteristics of electronic documents.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein said list of users is maintained and displayed on a topic by topic basis.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein said steps are implemented as one or more computer software routines embodied in a tangible media and adapted to cause one or more computing systems to perform the operations recited therein.

13. A method of collecting data from users relating to temporal characteristics of electronic documents within an electronic interface comprising:

a) identifying a first event;

b) automatically identifying a geographic site associated with said first event;

c) automatically selecting a target set of individuals associated with said geographic site to be used in collecting data relating to said event;

d) communicating and soliciting date from each of said target set of individuals, including by;

1. identifying said first event within an electronic interface;

2. presenting information on one or more electronic documents containing content directed to said first event or topic within the electronic interface;

3. providing a sorting section within the interface which permits users to express their ranking of temporal characteristics of said one or more electronic documents.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein step (d) is performed through a television interface, a cell phone interface, a speech recognition interface and/or web based interface.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein step (d) is performed through an RSS feed.

16. The method of claim 13 wherein step (d) is performed in part through recognizing speech utterances provided by such target set of individuals.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein said target set of individuals include persons who have opted to participate and share voice channel data with an automatic data collection processing routine.

18. The method of claim 13 wherein said electronic interface is customized with topics matched to interests of said target set of individuals.

19. The method of claim 13 wherein said target set of individuals are selected based on studying electronic bookmarks of such persons.

20. The method of claim 13 wherein said target set of individuals are selected from identifying search queries made by such persons.

21. The method of claim 13 wherein said steps are implemented as one or more computer software routines embodied in a tangible media and adapted to cause one or more computing systems to perform the operations recited therein.

22. A method of collecting data relating to an event from users of a social networking site comprising:

a) offering membership to users of said social networking site to a reporting group associated with a first event or topic;

b) identifying at least a first event or topic within a first portion of an electronic interface used by said users;

c) presenting information on one or more electronic documents containing content directed to said first event or topic within the electronic interface;

wherein said information is contributed at least in part by said reporting group;

d) providing a sorting section within the electronic interface which permits members of said reporting group to express their ranking of temporal characteristics of said one or more electronic documents.

23. The method of claim 22 wherein members of said reporting group contribute content for said first event or topic in a temporal order.

24. The method of claim 22 wherein said first event or topic is an entertainment event.

25. The method of claim 22 wherein membership to said reporting group is offered based at least in part on a geographic characteristic of said users.

26. The method of claim 22 wherein advertising is presented to users of said social networking site based on a state identified for said first event or topic.

27. The method of claim 22 wherein advertising is presented to a user of said social networking site based on a temporal sequence identified for an electronic document reviewed by said user for said first event or topic.

28. The method of claim 22 wherein said steps are implemented as one or more computer software routines embodied in a tangible media and adapted to cause one or more computing systems to perform the operations recited therein.
