Abstract

An embodiment pertains generally to a method of classifying information. The method includes providing for a data object and receiving ownership roles for the data object. The ownership roles establishes at least one user as associated with the data object and a relationship of the at least one user to the data object. The method also includes generating metadata comprising the ownership roles and outputting the metadata to be stored with the data object.

Claims

1. A method of classifying information, the method comprising:

receiving ownership roles for a data object, wherein the ownership roles establish at least one user as being associated with the data object and a relationship of the at least one user to the data object;

generating metadata comprising the ownership roles; and

associating the metadata with the data object.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein generating the metadata, comprises:

generating metadata comprising at least one user responsible for the data object;

at least one user accountable for the data object;

at least one user consulted about the data object; and

at least one user informed about the data object.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising notifying each user established in the ownership roles about the data object based on the established ownership role.

4. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

storing the ownership roles associated with the data object in a searchable repository.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein storing the ownership roles in a searchable repository comprises:

storing a link to the data object in the searchable repository.

6. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

accumulating a plurality of ownership roles associated with a plurality of data objects; and

searching the plurality of ownership roles associated with the plurality of data objects based on a desired user.

7. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

developing a subset of the plurality of ownership roles, each ownership roles of the subset of the plurality of ownership roles having the desired user established in the ownership roles; and

assembling a search result list based on the subset of the plurality of ownership roles, wherein each entry on the search result list further comprises the link to a respective data object and its associated native application.

8. An apparatus for classifying data, the apparatus comprising:

an application interface configured to couple with a plurality of applications;

a repository; and

a ownership engine configured to couple with the application interface and the repository, wherein the ownership engine is configured to provide for a data object;

receive ownership roles for the data object, wherein the ownership roles establish at least one user as being associated with the data object and a relationship of the at least one user to the data object;

generate metadata comprising the ownership roles; and

output the metadata to be stored with the data object.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the ownership engine is further configured to generate metadata comprising at least one user responsible for the data object;

at least one user accountable for the data object;

at least one user consulted about the data object; and

at least one user informed about the data object.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the ownership engine is further configured to notify each user established in the ownership roles about the data object based on the established ownership role.

11. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the repository is further configured to accumulate a plurality of ownership roles, the plurality of ownership roles associated with a plurality of data objects.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising a search engine coupled to the repository, the search engine configured to search the repository based on a desired user.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the search engine is further configured to develop a subset of the plurality of ownership roles, each ownership role of the subset of the plurality of ownership roles including the desired user;

and to assemble a search result list based on the subset of the plurality of ownership roles, wherein each entry on the search result list further comprises a link to a respective data object and its associated native application.

19. The system of claim 11, wherein the search engine is further configured to develop a subset of the plurality of ownership roles, each ownership role of the subset of the plurality of ownership roles including the desired user;

and to assemble a search result list based on the subset of the plurality of ownership roles, wherein each entry on the search result list further comprises a link to a respective data object and its associated native application.

14. A system for classifying a variety of data objects, the system comprising:

a server configured to store and execute a plurality of applications for a plurality of users, wherein each user is configured to be assigned a respective application space to execute the plurality of applications and each application of the plurality having a respective data object type;

a repository configured to be accessible to the plurality of users; and

an ownership classification module configured to execute in the application space and to couple with each application of the plurality of applications, wherein the ownership classification module is configured to receive ownership roles for the data object in response to being invoked within the respective application, wherein the ownership roles establish at least one user as being associated with the data object and a relationship of the at least one user to the data object;

to generate metadata comprising the ownership roles in response to being invoked within the respective application; and

to output the metadata to be stored with the data object.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the ownership classification module is further configured to generate metadata comprising at least one user responsible for the data object;

at least one user accountable for the data object;

at least one user consulted about the data object; and

at least one user informed about the data object.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the ownership classification module is further configured to notify each user established in the ownership roles about the data object based on the established ownership role.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the repository is further configured to accumulate a plurality of ownership roles, the plurality of ownership roles associated with a plurality of data objects.

18. The system of claim 17, further comprising a search engine coupled to the repository, the search engine configured to search the repository based on a desired user.
