Abstract

A system and method for creating a visual perspective of operational information that facilitates rapid decision making. The system and method merges existing data sources from any number of computer-fed external data sources through an applications server to display data sets in easily recognizable, repeatable images (tiles) uniquely designed for a user'"'"'s application. The system and method creates visual perspectives of data that accelerate decision-making and problem-solving processes by displaying repeatable images (tiles) that display performance results versus expected performance criteria in high-volume, intuitive displays.

Claims

1. A method of generating a display of information associated with a system comprising at least one object of interest, the at least one object of interest being associated with a display tile and comprising a plurality of attributes whose states are to be displayed within the associated display tile, said method comprising:

inputting first data corresponding to a first attribute of the at least one object of interest;

determining a first value of the input data corresponding to the first attribute; and

placing a first display layer comprising an image representing the first attribute and corresponding to the determined first input data value on a top portion of the display tile associated with the at least one object of interest,

wherein the placed first display layer replaces a prior first display layer associated with the first attribute, but does not obscure other images or regions within the tile that are associated with other attributes.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the placed first display layer is selected from a plurality of first display layers associated with the first attribute, each first display layer having an image corresponding to a different state of the first attribute.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the first display layers use images of different colors to represent the different states of the first attribute.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the first display layers use images of different sizes to represent the different states of the first attribute.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the first display layers use images of different sizes and colors to represent the different states of the first attribute.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein the first display layers use images selected from the group of different sizes, colors and symbols to represent the different states of the first attribute.

7. The method of claim 2, wherein the determining step comprises determining whether the first input data value falls within one of a plurality of ranges and the placing step comprises selecting the first display layer having an image associated with the determined range.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

inputting second data corresponding to a second attribute of the at least one object of interest;

determining a second value of the input data corresponding to the second attribute; and

placing a second display layer comprising an image representing the second attribute and corresponding to the determined second input data value on a top portion of the display tile associated with the at least one object of interest,

wherein the placed second display layer replaces a prior second display layer associated with the second attribute, but does not obscure other images within the tile that are associated with the first attribute or other attributes.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the systems comprises a plurality of objects of interest and said method comprises displaying display tiles associated with each object of interest in a mosaic display, each display tile defined by a plurality of display layers forming a unified image simultaneously representing the states of the attributes associated with the object associated with each tile.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising the act of enlarging a selected display tile in response to a user input and shrinking display tiles in a same row as the selected display tile.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the input first data is real time data.

12. A display system for generating and outputting a display of information associated with a monitored system comprising at least one object of interest, the at least one object of interest being associated with a display tile and comprising a plurality of attributes whose states are to be displayed within the associated display tile, said display comprising:

a database server for storing data corresponding to attributes of the at least one object of interest;

an application server connected to the database server, said application server adapted to;

input first data corresponding to a first attribute of the at least one object of interest from the data stored in the database server;

determine a first value of the input data corresponding to the first attribute;

place a first display layer comprising an image representing the first attribute and corresponding to the determined first input data value on a top portion of the display tile associated with the at least one object of interest; and

output the display tile associated with the at least one object of interest,

wherein the placed first display layer replaces a prior first display layer associated with the first attribute, but does not obscure other images or regions within the tile that are associated with other attributes.

13. The display system of claim 12, wherein the application server selects the placed first display layer from a plurality of first display layers associated with the first attribute, each first display layer having an image corresponding to a different state of the first attribute.

14. The display system of claim 13, wherein the first display layers use images of different sizes and colors to represent the different states of the first attribute.

15. The display system of claim 13, wherein the first display layers use images selected from one of different sizes, colors and symbols to represent the different states of the first attribute.

16. The display system of claim 12, wherein the application server determines whether the first input data value falls within one of a plurality of ranges and selects the first display layer having an image associated with the determined range.

17. The display system of claim 12 further comprising a data management server connected to the application server, said data management server for storing filters and user preferences used by the application server.

18. The display system of claim 12 further comprising data adapters connected between the application server and the database server.

19. The display system of claim 18, wherein the input first data is extensible markup language (XML) formatted data.

20. The display system of claim 12, wherein the application server is further adapted to:

input second data corresponding to a second attribute of the at least one object of interest;

determine a second value of the input data corresponding to the second attribute; and

place a second display layer comprising an image representing the second attribute and corresponding to the determined second input data value on a top portion of the display tile associated with the at least one object of interest,

wherein the placed second display layer replaces a prior second display layer associated with the second attribute, but does not obscure other images within the tile that are associated with the first attribute or other attributes.

21. The display system of claim 12, wherein the monitored system comprises a plurality of objects of interest and said application server displays display tiles associated with each object of interest in a mosaic display, each display tile defined by a plurality of display layers forming a unified image simultaneously representing the states of the attributes associated with the object associated with each tile.

22. The display system of claim 21, wherein the application server is further adapted to enlarge a selected display tile in response to a user input.

23. A server computer programmed to perform a method of generating a display of information associated with a plurality of objects of interest, each object of interest being associated with a display tile and comprising a plurality of attributes whose states are to be displayed within the associated display tile, said server computer comprising:

means for inputting first data corresponding to a first attribute of a first object of interest;

means for determining a first value of the input first data corresponding to the first attribute; and

means for placing a first display layer comprising an image representing the first attribute and corresponding to the determined first input data value on a top portion of the display tile associated with the first object of interest.

24. The server computer of claim 23, wherein the placed first display layer replaces a prior first display layer associated with the first attribute, but does not obscure other images or regions within the display tile that are associated with other attributes.

25. The server computer of claim 23, wherein the placing means selects the placed first display layer from a plurality of first display layers associated with the first attribute, each first display layer having an image corresponding to a different state of the first attribute.

26. The server computer of claim 25, wherein the first display layers use images comprising one of different sizes, colors and symbols to represent the different states of the first attribute.

27. The server computer of claim 25, wherein the first display layers use images comprising two or more of different sizes, colors and symbols to represent the different states of the first attribute.

28. The server computer of claim 23, wherein the server computer displays display tiles associated with each object of interest in a mosaic display, each display tile defined by a plurality of display layers forming a unified image simultaneously representing the states of the attributes associated with the object associated with each tile.
