Abstract

A World Wide Web registration processing system is disclosed for assisting World Wide Web users in registering at World Wide Web web sites. For each such user, the registration processing system includes a long term repository for the user'"'"'s web site registration information so that this information can be automatically transferred to a plurality of web sites to which the user may at time to time request to be registered. Further, the registration processing system provides the user with the capability to have a common user identification that may be used for accessing services at a plurality of web sites.

Claims

1. A system for registering a user with at least one third party website, the system comprising:

a network interface configured to establish a connection to a network;

a network server operably connected to the network interface, the network server storing at least one application program that, when executed, causes the network server to perform the operations of;

requesting registration information from the user at a user client node, wherein the user client node is connected to the network;

receiving a response from the user, wherein the response provides registration information identifying the user to the at least one application program; and

transmitting the registration information to the at least one third party website, the registration information used in registering the user with the at least one third party website.

2. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a user registration database in communication with the network server, the user registration database configured to store the registration information.

3. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

an access log registration database in communication with the network server, the access log registration database configured to store the identity of a third party website that requests the registration information from the network server.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the registration information comprises a user identifier and password that are adapted for use in identifying the user to the at least one third party website.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the transmitting operation occurs upon a request by the user to provide the registration information to the at least one third party website.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the execution of the at least one application program causes the network server to further perform the operations of:

determining whether the response provides a minimum amount of information necessary to uniquely identify the user; and

in the event that the response does not provide the minimum amount of information, requesting additional registration information from the user.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the network is the Internet.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one third party website is associated with an on-line merchant and the registration information facilitates the purchase of products or services from the on-line merchant.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein the registration information includes at least one of payment information and a shipping address.
