Abstract

In accordance with some embodiments, a computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a device with a touch screen display is disclosed. In the method, at least a first portion of an electronic document is displayed at a first magnification. A gesture is detected on or near the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom in by a user-specified amount. In response to detecting the gesture, decreasing portions of the electronic document are displayed at increasing magnifications. If, upon detecting termination of the gesture, the magnification exceeds a predefined magnification, a respective portion of the electronic document is displayed at the predefined magnification.

Claims

1. A device, comprising:

a touch screen display;

one or more processors;

memory; and

one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for;

displaying at least a first portion of an electronic document at a first magnification;

detecting a gesture on or near the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom in by a user-specified amount;

displaying decreasing portions of the electronic document at increasing magnifications, in response to detecting the gesture; and

displaying a respective portion of the electronic document at a predefined magnification if, upon detecting termination of the gesture, the magnification exceeds the predefined magnification.

2. The device of claim 1, including instructions for:

displaying a last decreased portion of the electronic document at a first resolution, immediately prior to detecting termination of the gesture; and

displaying the respective portion of the electronic document at a second resolution that is greater than the first resolution, upon detecting termination of the gesture.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the gesture comprises a de-pinching gesture.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is a portable multifunction device.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the electronic document is a web page.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the electronic document is a digital image.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the electronic document is a word processing, spreadsheet, email or presentation document.

8. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

at a device with a touch screen display;

displaying at least a first portion of an electronic document at a first magnification;

detecting a gesture on or near the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom in by a user-specified amount;

displaying decreasing portions of the electronic document at increasing magnifications, in response to detecting the gesture; and

displaying a respective portion of the electronic document at a predefined magnification if, upon detecting termination of the gesture, the magnification exceeds the predefined magnification.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 8, including:

displaying a last decreased portion of the electronic document at a first resolution, immediately prior to detecting termination of the gesture; and

displaying the respective portion of the electronic document at a second resolution that is greater than the first resolution, upon detecting termination of the gesture.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 8, wherein the gesture comprises a de-pinching gesture.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 8, wherein the device is a portable multifunction device.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 8, wherein the electronic document is a web page.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 8, wherein the electronic document is a digital image.

14. A graphical user interface on a device with a touch screen display, comprising:

decreasing portions, including a first portion, of an electronic document, to be displayed on the touch screen display at increasing magnifications;

wherein;

in response to detecting a gesture on or near the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom in by a user-specified amount, wherein the gesture is detected while displaying at least the first portion of an electronic document at a first magnification, the decreasing portions of the electronic document are displayed at the increasing magnifications; and

upon detecting termination of the gesture, if the magnification exceeds a predefined magnification, a respective portion of the electronic document is displayed at the predefined magnification.

15. The graphical user interface of claim 14, wherein:

a last decreased portion of the electronic document is displayed at a first resolution, immediately prior to detecting termination of the gesture; and

the respective portion of the electronic document is displayed at a second resolution that is greater than the first resolution, upon detecting termination of the gesture.

16. The graphical user interface of claim 14, wherein the gesture comprises a de-pinching gesture.

17. The graphical user interface of claim 14, wherein the device is a portable multifunction device.

18. The graphical user interface of claim 14, wherein the electronic document is a web page.

19. The graphical user interface of claim 14, wherein the electronic document is a digital image.

20. A computer readable storage medium having stored therein instructions, which when executed by a device with a touch screen display, cause the device to:

display at least a first portion of an electronic document at a first magnification;

detect a gesture on or near the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom in by a user-specified amount;

display decreasing portions of the electronic document at increasing magnifications, in response to detecting the gesture; and

display a respective portion of the electronic document at a predefined magnification if, upon detecting termination of the gesture, the magnification exceeds a predefined magnification.

21. The computer readable storage medium of claim 20, including instructions, which when executed by the device with the touch screen display, cause the device to:

display a last decreased portion of the electronic document at a first resolution, immediately prior to detecting termination of the gesture; and

display the respective portion of the electronic document at a second resolution that is greater than the first resolution, upon detecting termination of the gesture.

22. The computer readable storage medium of claim 20, wherein the gesture comprises a de-pinching gesture.

23. The computer readable storage medium of claim 20, wherein the device is a portable multifunction device.
