98. A biological research product comprising a radio frequency identifier (RFID) tag, embedded in the biological research product or attached to the surface of the biological research product, wherein the biological research product comprises an electrophoresis gel, a gel cassette, or a gel strip.

99. The biological research product of claim 98, wherein the biological research product is a gel cassette.

101. The biological research product of claim 99, wherein the RFID tag is reversibly attached to the surface of the cassette.

102. The gel cassette of claim 99, wherein the gel cassette comprises an RFID tag embedded within the cassette.

103. The gel cassette of claim 102, wherein the RFID tag is embedded within the cassette during injection molding of the cassette.

104. The biological research product of claim 98, wherein the biological research product comprises an electrophoresis gel.

105. The biological research product of claim 104, wherein the electrophoresis gel comprises agarose, acrylamide, or a combination thereof.

106. The biological research product of claim 104, wherein the RFID tag is embedded in the electrophoresis gel.

107. The biological research product of claim 104, wherein the RFID tag is attached to the surface of the electrophoresis gel.

108. The biological research product of claim 98, wherein the biological research product comprises a gel strip.

114. The biological research product of claim 98, wherein the RFID tag encodes information that is not erasable.

115. The biological research product of claim 98, comprising an RFID tag having memory space that can be written to by a user or an automated system.

116. The biological research product of claim 115, wherein the memory space is erasable.

100. The biological research product of claim 199, wherein the gel cassette comprises an RFID tag attached to the surface of the cassette.

117. An electrophoresis system comprising:

a central processing unit (CPU);

an RFID reader that transmits information to the processing unit; and

a power supply integrated with the CPU.

118. The electrophoresis system of claim 117, wherein the CPU directs the electrophoresis system to display information on at least one display or graphical user interface.

119. The electrophoresis system of claim 117, wherein the CPU controls one or more electrophoresis conditions.

120. The electrophoresis system of claim 117, further comprising a gel cassette, wherein the cassette and/or a gel within the cassette comprise an RFID tag.

121. The electrophoresis system of claim 120, wherein the RFID tag includes information about the gel composition.

122. The electrophoresis system of claim 120, wherein the RFID tag is writable.

123. The electrophoresis system of claim 120, wherein the RFID tag includes information about one or more samples loaded on the gel.

124. A method of performing electrophoresis, comprising:

reading information from an RFID tag attached to or embedded in an electrophoresis gel or attached to or embedded in a gel cassette containing the gel using an RFID reader that is in communication with a CPU; and

electrophoresing at least one sample loaded on the gel using a power supply that is linked to the CPU, wherein at least a portion of the information read by the RFID reader is used to control or direct one or more conditions for electrophoresis.

125. The method of claim 124, wherein the information read from the RFID tag comprises information about the gel composition, the gel expiration date, and/or gel running conditions.

126. The method of claim 124, wherein one or more conditions for electrophoresis comprises the power level to be used for the electrophoresis or the length of time for electrophoresis.

127. The method of claim 124, wherein the CPU controls the one or more electrophoresis conditions by controlling the power supply.

128. The method of claim 124, further comprising writing information to the RFID tag attached to or embedded in the electrophoresis gel or gel cassette.

129. The method of claim 128, wherein the information written to the RFID tag comprises sample identity information or electrophoresis conditions.

130. A method for performing electrophoresis, comprising:

reading information from an RFID tag attached to or embedded in a gel or attached to or embedded in a gel cassette containing the gel using an RFID reader that is in communication with a CPU, wherein the information on the RFID tag comprises sample identity information;

electrophoresing at least one sample loaded on the gel using a power supply in communication with the CPU; and

transferring sample identity information from the RFID tag attached to or embedded in the gel or gel cassette to an RFID tag attached to or embedded in a blotting membrane or sample tube.

131. The method of claim 130, wherein the information from the RFID tag attached to or embedded in the gel or gel cassette includes one or more of biological research product identity information, sample identity information, and sample procedure information.

132. The method of claim 130, wherein transferring sample identity information from the RFID tag attached to or embedded in a gel or gel cassette comprises transferring sample identity information to an RFID tag attached to or embedded in a blotting membrane.

133. The method of claim 132, further comprising incubating the blotting membrane with an antibody.

134. The method of claim 130, wherein transferring sample identity information from the RFID tag attached to or embedded in a gel or gel cassette comprises transferring sample identity information to an RFID tag attached to or embedded in a sample tube.

135. The method of claim 134, wherein a portion of the gel is divided into slices, wherein a gel slice is transferred to the sample tube.

136. A gel scanner system comprising:

a gel scanner linked to a CPU; and

an RFID reader that can transmit information to the CPU from an electrophoresis gel or gel cassette, wherein the gel and/or the gel cassette comprise an embedded or attached RFID tag.

137. The gel scanner system of claim 136, wherein the RFID tag comprises sample identity information.

138. The gel scanner system of claim 136, wherein the RFID reader is integral to the gel scanner.

139. A method of imaging a gel, comprising:

reading information from an RFID tag associated with a gel or gel cassette using an RFID reader;

imaging the gel on a gel scanner;

linking the information from the RFID tag with an image of the gel from the gel scanner in a CPU.

140. The method of claim 139, wherein the information on the RFID tag comprises biological research product identity information, sample identity information, or sample procedure information.
