Abstract

Antimicrobial compositions and methods of using such antimicrobial compositions to provide a reduction in populations of viable microorganisms.

Claims

1. An antimicrobial composition, comprising:

a. an amount of water;

b. an amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water by volume, said amount of diacetone alcohol sufficient in the mixture by volume to allow said amount of water to evaporate from the mixture at a greater rate than said amount of diacetone alcohol, and wherein the mixture provides greater than a 2-log₁₀ order reduction in a population of viable microorganisms over a duration of time of not greater than thirty minutes.

2. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol in the mixture is between about 10 percent and about 95 percent by volume.

3. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol has a concentration in said mixture of between about 20 percent and about 40 percent by volume.

4. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1, further comprising an amount of diluent mixed with said amount of water and said amount of diacetone alcohol, wherein the mixture has not less than 10 percent diacetone alcohol by volume.

5. The antimicrobial composition of claim 4, wherein said amount of diluent contains said population of viable microorganisms.

6. The antimicrobial composition of claim 5, wherein said viable microorganisms are selected from the group consisting of:

Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922, MRI EC

     13), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027, MRI Ps

     10), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538, MRI Sta

     21), Aspergillus niger (ATCC 16404, MRI AN

     2), and Clostridium sporogenes (ATCC 19404, MRI C1

     12).

31. An antimicrobial composition, comprising:

a. an inactive agent;

b. an antimicrobially active agent miscible in said inactive agent within a temperature range of between about 5°

C. and about 90°

C. at about 760 mm Hg, and wherein said antimicrobially active agent has a boiling point greater than said inactive agent of between about 10°

C. and about 80°

C., and wherein said inactive agent evaporates from a mixture of said inactive agent and said antimicrobially active agent at a greater rate than said antimicrobially active agent within said temperature range of between about 5°

C. and about 90°

C. at about 760 mm Hg, and wherein said mixture provides greater than a 2-log₁₀ order reduction in a population of viable microorganisms.

32. The antimicrobial composition of claim 31, wherein said mixture provides greater than a 2-log₁₀ order reduction in said population of viable microorganisms during the period in which said inactive agent evaporates from said mixture.

33. The antimicrobial composition of claim 31, wherein evaporation of said inactive agent generates said mixture which provides greater than a 2-log₁₀ order reduction in a population of viable microorganisms.

34. The antimicrobial composition of claim 31, wherein evaporation rate of said inactive agent from said mixture is greater than evaporation rate of said antimicrobially active agent from said mixture generating an increase in said antimicrobially active agent by volume in said mixture over a period of time.

35. The antimicrobial composition of claim 34, wherein said antimicrobially active agent in said mixture is greater than an amount of said antimicrobially active agent which generates the azeotrope of the mixture.

36. The antimicrobial composition of claim 31, wherein evaporation of said mixture leaves no residue.

37. The antimicrobial composition of claim 31, wherein said antimicrobially active agent comprises an organic substance having a boiling point of between about 110°

C. and about 180°

C. and a melting point of not greater than −

20°

C.

38. The antimicrobial composition of claim 37, wherein said antimicrobially active agent has a log P_ow of between about −

0.3 and about 1.0.

39. The antimicrobial composition of claim 38, wherein said antimicrobially active agent provides an non-ionized molecular structure which includes between four and eight carbon atoms and between two and four oxygen atoms.

40. The antimicrobial composition of claim 39, wherein said non-ionized molecular structure of said antimicrobially active agent further includes one nitrogen atom.

41. The antimicrobial composition of claim 34, wherein said antimicrobially active agent comprises a hydroxyketone.

43. The antimicrobial composition of claim 41, wherein said hydroxyketone comprises a beta hydroxyketone selected from the group consisting of:

4-hydroxy-2-butanone, 4-hydroxy-2-pentanone, 1-hydroxy-3-pentanone, 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone, 4-hydroxy-2-hexanone, 5-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-hexanone, 5-hydroxy-5-methyl-3-hexanone, 5-hydroxy-3-heptanone, 5-hydroxy-5-methyl-3-heptanone, 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-5-heptanone, 4-hydroxy-3,4-dimethyl-2-hexanone.

44. The antimicrobial composition of claim 43, wherein said beta hydroxyketone comprises an amount of 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone.

45. The antimicrobial composition of claim 43, wherein said amount of 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone in said mixture comprises between about 10 percent and about 95 percent by volume.

46. The antimicrobial composition of claim 43, wherein said amount of 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone in said mixture comprises between about 20 percent and about 95 percent by volume.
