Abstract
An anchoring system for an elongated medical article comprises an anchor pad and a retainer mounted upon the anchor pad. The retainer includes a base, a cover, and a compressible member including a receptacle into which the medical article to be retained is placed. When the cover is closed, the medical article is secured within the receptacle by the pressure of the compressible member and the cover upon the medical article. One or more biasing members act upon the compressible member to increase the frictional forces acting on the retained section of the medical article. The receptacle may form a channel that follows a curved path through the retainer. The retainer may also include guide extensions to support the medical article along a transverse bend toward the skin of the patient.

21. A retainer for securing an elongated medical article to a patient comprising:

a base;
a cover attached to the base and at least movable from an open position to a closed position;
a compressible member being supported by the base and having an inner wall, the compressible member being at least partially covered by the cover when the cover is in the closed position, at least a portion of the compressible member being contacted by at least a portion of the cover at least when the cover is in the closed position, the inner wall having a curvilinear shape in at least a lateral direction along at least a portion of its length so as to contact a portion of the medical article and inhibit longitudinal movement of the medical article through the retainer; and

a compressible member, at least a portion of the compressible member being disposed between the base and the cover at least when the cover is in the closed position, the compressible member defining at least in part a curvilinear receptacle configured to receive at least a portion of the medical article, at least a deformable portion of the compressible member being deformable so as to bear against the secured portion of the medical article when received within the receptacle and the cover is in the closed position, the compressible member being sized so that the cover extends laterally and longitudinally beyond the compressible member at least when the cover is in the closed position; and

a plurality of receptacles, each receptacle being defined at least in part by at least one of the plurality of compressible members and being disposed in a staggered arrangement relative to the base, each receptacle having a curvilinear shape along at least a portion of its length, at least a portion of each receptacle being compressible at least when the cover is in the closed position so as to contact a received portion of the medical article and inhibit longitudinal movement of the medical article through the receptacle; and
