Abstract

A system and method for providing media recommendations, such as music recommendations, based on information identifying media recently played by a select group of heavy influencers for a subscription fee are provided. The group of heavy influencers may be a group of one or more celebrities or other persons whose media selections may heavily influence media selections of the users of the system.

Claims

1. A method for providing media recommendations comprising:

identifying a desired group of heavy influencers comprising at least one heavy influencer from a plurality of heavy influencers;

receiving media identification information identifying media presentations recently played by media players associated with the desired group of heavy influencers; and

selecting a recommended media presentation from a plurality of media presentations including the media presentations identified by the media identification information.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein identifying the desired group of heavy influencers comprises receiving user input defining each heavy influencer in the desired group of heavy influencers.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein identifying the desired group of heavy influencers comprises selecting the desired group of heavy influencers from a plurality of predefined groups of the plurality of heavy influencers.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of heavy influencers is a person having substantial influence over media presentations played by other persons.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of heavy influencers is a celebrity.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving second media identification information identifying second media presentations subsequently played by the media players associated with the desired group of heavy influencers; and

selecting a second recommended media presentation from the second media presentations identified by the second media identification information.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving second media identification information identifying second media presentations subsequently played by the media players associated with the desired group of heavy influencers; and

selecting a second recommended media presentation from a plurality of media presentations comprising the plurality of media presentations identified by the media identification information and the second media presentations identified by the second media identification information.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein receiving the media identification information comprises receiving the media identification information in real time as the media presentations identified by the media identification information are played by the media players associated with the desired group of heavy influencers.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein selecting the recommended media presentation comprises:

filtering the media identification information based on user defined filtering criteria to remove media identification information identifying media presentations that are not to be recommended; and

selecting the recommended media presentation from the media presentations identified by the filtered media identification information.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein receiving the media identification information comprises receiving the media identification information at a central server communicatively coupled to the media players associated with the desired group of heavy influencers via a network, and selecting the recommended media presentation comprises selecting the recommended media presentation at the central server.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein selecting the recommended media presentation further comprises providing an associated recommendation to a client media player communicatively coupled to the central server via the network, wherein the recommended media presentation is selected and the associated recommendation is provided to the client media player for a subscription fee.

12. The method of claim 10 further comprising providing a recommendation identifying the recommended media presentation to a client media player communicatively coupled to the central server via the network for a subscription fee.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein providing the recommendation comprises automatically providing the recommendation to the client media player once a previous recommendation has expired.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein providing the recommendation comprises providing the recommendation to the client media player upon request.

15. The method of claim 10 further comprising providing a recommendation comprising a preview of the recommended media presentation to a client media player communicatively coupled to the central server via the network for a subscription fee.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein providing the recommendation comprises automatically providing the recommendation to the client media player once a previous recommendation has expired.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein providing the recommendation comprises providing the recommendation to the client media player upon request.

18. The method of claim 10 further comprising providing a recommendation comprising the recommended media presentation to a client media player communicatively coupled to the central server via the network for a subscription fee.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein providing the recommendation comprises automatically providing the recommendation to the client media player once a previous recommendation has expired.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein providing the recommendation comprises providing the recommendation to the client media player upon request.

21. The method of claim 1 wherein receiving the media identification information comprises receiving the media identification information at a central server communicatively coupled to the media players associated with the desired group of heavy influencers via a network, and selecting the recommended media presentation comprises:

providing the media identification information to a client media player via the network; and

selecting the recommended media presentation at the client media player.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein providing the media identification information to the client media player comprises providing the media identification information to the client media player for a subscription fee.

23. The method of claim 21 wherein providing the media identification information to the client media player comprises automatically providing the media identification information to the client media player in real time as the media identification information is received from the media players associated with the desired group of heavy influencers.

24. The method of claim 21 wherein providing the media identification information to the client media player comprises providing the media identification information to the client media player upon request.

25. A central server for providing media recommendations comprising:

a communication interface communicatively coupling the central server to media players associated with a plurality of heavy influencers and a client media player associated with a user; and

a control system associated with the communication interface and adapted to;

identify a desired group of heavy influencers comprising at least one heavy influencer from the plurality of heavy influencers;

receive media identification information identifying media presentations recently played by media players associated with the desired group of heavy influencers; and

select a recommended media presentation for the user from the media presentations identified by the media identification information.

26. The central server of claim 25 wherein the desired group of heavy influencers is defined by the user.

27. The central server of claim 25 wherein the desired group of heavy influencers is selected by the user from a plurality of predefined groups of the plurality of heavy influencers.

28. The central server of claim 25 wherein each of the plurality of heavy influencers is a person having substantial influence over media presentations played by other persons.

29. The central server of claim 25 wherein each of the plurality of heavy influencers is a celebrity.

30. The central server of claim 25 wherein the media identification information is provided to the central server in real time as the media presentations identified by the media identification information are played by the media players associated with the desired group of heavy influencers.

31. The central server of claim 25 wherein the control system is further adapted to select the recommended media presentation for the user from the media presentations identified by the media identification information and provide an associated recommendation to the client media player for a subscription fee.

32. A central server in a system for providing media recommendations comprising:

a communication interface communicatively coupling the central server to media players associated with a plurality of heavy influencers and a client media player associated with a user; and

a control system associated with the communication interface and adapted to;

identify a desired group of heavy influencers comprising at least one heavy influencer from the plurality of heavy influencers;

receive media identification information identifying media presentations recently played by media players associated with the desired group of heavy influencers; and

provide the media identification information to the client media player, wherein the client media player selects a recommended media presentation for the user from the media presentations identified by the media identification information.

33. The central server of claim 32 wherein the desired group of heavy influencers is defined by the user.

34. The central server of claim 32 wherein the desired group of heavy influencers is selected by the user from a plurality of predefined groups of the plurality of heavy influencers.

35. The central server of claim 32 wherein each of the plurality of heavy influencers is a person having substantial influence over media presentations played by other persons.

36. The central server of claim 32 wherein each of the plurality of heavy influencers is a celebrity.

37. The central server of claim 32 wherein the media identification information is provided to the central server in real time as the media presentations identified by the media identification information are played by the media players associated with the desired group of heavy influencers.

38. The central server of claim 32 wherein the control system is further adapted to provide the media identification information to the client media player for a subscription fee.
