Abstract

There is provided an illuminated surface mounted on a base surface. The illuminated surface includes a plurality of transmissive tiles configured to allow light to pass therethrough. Each of the transmissive tiles includes an exterior surface, an attaching surface and a plurality of lateral sides disposed between the exterior and attaching surfaces. The attaching surface is affixable to the base surface. The transmissive tiles are arranged in spaced relation to each other to define a cable channel. The cable channel is defined by opposing lateral sides of adjacent transmissive tiles. A fiber optic cable is in optical communication a light source and receives light therefrom. The fiber optic cable includes a longitudinal axis and a first segment disposed within the cable channel. The first segment is configured to radially radiate light along the longitudinal axis into the lateral sides of the adjacent transmissive tiles.

Claims

1. An illuminated surface for use on a base surface, the illuminated surface comprising:

a plurality of transmissive tiles configured to allow light to pass therethrough, each of the transmissive tiles having an exterior surface, an opposing attaching surface, and a plurality of lateral sides disposed between the exterior and attaching surfaces, the attaching surface being affixable to the base surface, the plurality of transmissive tiles being arranged in spaced relation to each other to define a cable channel, the cable channel being defined by opposing lateral sides of adjacent transmissive tiles;

a light source being operative to radiate light; and

a fiber optic cable in optical communication with the light source to receive light from the light source, the fiber optic cable having a longitudinal axis and a first segment disposed within the cable channel, the first segment being configured to radially radiate light along the longitudinal axis into the lateral sides of the adjacent transmissive tiles.

2. The illuminated surface of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the first segment abuts at least some of the plurality of lateral sides defining the cable channel to enhance the transmission of light from the fiber optic cable into the adjacent transmissive tiles.

3. The illuminated surface of claim 1 wherein the plurality of transmissive tiles are comprised of glass.

4. The illuminated surface of claim 1 wherein the plurality of transmissive tiles are comprised of a plastic material.

5. The illuminated surface of claim 1 further comprising grout disposed within the cable channel, the fiber optic cable being positioned between the grout and the attachment surface of the adjacent transmissive tiles.

6. The illuminated surface of claim 5 further comprising a transmissive sleeve disposed within the cable channel, a substantial length of the first segment being disposed within the transmissive sleeve, the transmissive sleeve abutting the lateral sides of the transmissive tiles.

7. The illuminated surface of claim 5 further comprising transmissive caulk disposed within the cable channel, the transmissive caulk being disposed between the fiber optic cable and the grout.

8. The illuminated surface of claim 1 further comprising a color wheel in optical communication with the light source and the fiber optic cable, the color wheel being operative to vary the color of light received by the fiber optic cable from the light source.

9. The illuminated surface of claim 8 further comprising a color controller in electrical communication with the color wheel, the controller being operative to enable a user to control the color wheel.

10. The illuminated surface of claim 1 further comprising an illumination controller in electrical communication with the light source, the illumination controller being operative to vary the intensity of light emitted by the light source.

11. A method of constructing an illuminated surface, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) providing a light source and a fiber optic cable optically coupled thereto, the light source being operative to radiate light and the fiber optic cable being configured to receive light therefrom, the fiber optic cable having a longitudinal axis;

(b) affixing a plurality of transmissive tiles to a base surface, each of the transmissive tiles having an exterior surface, an opposing attaching surface, and a plurality of lateral sides disposed between the exterior and attaching surfaces, the attaching surface being affixed to the base surface, the plurality of transmissive tiles being affixed to the base surface in spaced relation to each other to define a cable channel, the cable channel being defined by opposing lateral sides of adjacent transmissive tiles; and

(c) disposing a first segment of the fiber optic cable within the cable channel, the first segment being configured to radially radiate light along the longitudinal axis into the lateral sides of the adjacent transmissive tiles.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein step (c) comprises abutting the first segment against at least some of the adjacent transmissive tiles to enhance the transmission of light from the first segment into the adjacent transmissive tiles.

13. The method of claim 11 further comprising the step of disposing grout within the cable channel, the fiber optic cable being positioned between the grout and the attachment surface of the adjacent transmissive tiles.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising the step of disposing transmissive caulk within the cable channel, the transmissive caulk being disposed between the fiber optic cable and the grout.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein step (c) includes:

providing a transmissive sleeve;

disposing the transmissive sleeve within the cable channel, the transmissive sleeve abutting the lateral sides of the transmissive tiles; and

disposing the first segment of the fiber optic cable within the transmissive sleeve.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein step (a) includes further providing a color wheel in optical communication with the light source and the fiber optic cable, the color wheel being operative to vary the color of light received by the fiber optic cable from the light source.

17. A method of installing a prefabricated illuminated surface onto a support member, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) providing the prefabricated illuminated surface including;

a plurality of transmissive tiles configured to allow light to pass therethrough, each of the transmissive tiles having an exterior surface, an opposing attaching surface, and a plurality of lateral sides disposed between the exterior and attaching surfaces, the attaching surface being affixed to a mounting member, the mounting member having a tile surface and a support surface, the tiles being affixed to the tile surface, the plurality of transmissive tiles being arranged in spaced relation to each other to define a cable channel, the cable channel being defined by opposing lateral sides of adjacent transmissive tiles;

a light source being operative to radiate light; and

a fiber optic cable in optical communication with the light source to receive light from the light source, the fiber optic cable having a longitudinal axis and a first segment disposed within the cable channel, the first segment being configured to radially radiate light along the longitudinal axis into the lateral sides of the adjacent transmissive tiles; and

(b) attaching the support surface of the mounting member to the support member.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein step (a) includes providing a prefabricated illuminated surface having grout disposed within the cable channel, the fiber optic cable being positioned between the grout and the attachment surface of the adjacent transmissive tiles.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein step (a) includes providing a prefabricated illuminated surface having transmissive caulk disposed within the cable channel, the transmissive caulk being disposed between the fiber optic cable and the grout.

20. The method of claim 17 wherein step (a) includes providing a prefabricated illuminated surface having plastic tiles.
