Abstract

A number of orthopaedic surgical instruments are also disclosed. A method, apparatus, and system for fabricating such instruments are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly, comprising:

a customized patient-specific cutting block comprising (i) a bone-facing surface having a customized patient-specific negative contour configured to receive a portion of an anterior side of a bone of a knee of a patient that has a corresponding contour, (ii) an outer surface opposite the bone-facing surface, (iii) at least one guide pin hole, and (iv) a cutting guide,

an ankle brace configured to be secured externally to an ankle of the patient, and

an external alignment rod having a first end secured to the customized patient-specific cutting block and a second end secured to the ankle brace.

2. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 1, wherein the alignment rod is telescoping and has a first rod which is received into a second rod.

3. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 2, wherein the alignment rod further comprises a securing device that is operable to lock the first rod and the second rod in a fixed position relative to one another.

4. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 1, wherein the customized patient-specific cutting block comprises a customized patient-specific femoral cutting block.

5. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 1, wherein the customized patient-specific cutting block comprises a customized patient-specific tibial cutting block.

6. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 1, wherein the ankle brace comprises a rear strap configured to wrap around the posterior side of the ankle of the patient.

7. A customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly, comprising:

a customized patient-specific cutting block comprising (i) a bone-facing surface having a customized patient-specific negative contour configured to receive a portion of an anterior side of a bone of a knee of a patient that has a corresponding contour, (ii) an outer surface opposite the bone-facing surface, (iii) at least one guide pin hole, and (iv) a cutting guide,

an alignment cord having a first end secured to the customized patient-specific cutting block, and

a weight secured to a second end of the alignment cord.

8. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 7, wherein:

the customized patient-specific cutting block has an extension rod extending anteriorly from the outer surface thereof, and

the first end of the alignment cord is secured to the extension rod.

9. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 8, wherein the alignment cord extends inferiorly from the extension rod.

10. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 7, wherein the alignment cord extends inferiorly from the customized patient-specific cutting block.

11. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 7, wherein the customized patient-specific cutting block comprises a customized patient-specific femoral cutting block.

12. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 7, wherein the customized patient-specific cutting block comprises a customized patient-specific tibial cutting block.

13. A customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly, comprising:

a customized patient-specific cutting block comprising (i) a bone-facing surface having a customized patient-specific negative contour configured to receive a portion of an anterior side of a bone of a knee of a patient that has a corresponding contour, (ii) an outer surface opposite the bone-facing surface, (iii) at least one guide pin hole, and (iv) a cutting guide, and

an external alignment device having a first end secured to the customized patient-specific cutting block and second end that extends inferiorly from the customized patient-specific cutting block.

14. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 13, wherein the external alignment device comprises an elongated rod.

15. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 14, wherein:

the external alignment device further comprises an ankle brace configured to be secured externally to an ankle of the patient,

a first end of the elongated rod is secured to the customized patient-specific cutting block, and

a second end of the elongated rod is secured to the ankle brace.

16. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 14, wherein the elongated rod is a telescoping rod.

17. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 13, wherein the external alignment device comprises (i) an alignment cord having a first end secured to the customized patient-specific cutting block, and (ii) a weight secured to a second end of the alignment cord.

18. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 17, wherein:

the customized patient-specific cutting block has an extension rod extending anteriorly from the outer surface thereof, and

the first end of the alignment cord is secured to the extension rod.

19. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 13, wherein the customized patient-specific cutting block comprises a customized patient-specific femoral cutting block.

20. The customized patient-specific orthopaedic instrument assembly of claim 13, wherein the customized patient-specific cutting block comprises a customized patient-specific tibial cutting block.
