Abstract

The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for improved check valve technology used in flow meters, particularly compound/combo meters. The improved check valve technology may comprise a single piece module that (1) can easily be removed from the check valve chamber without disturbing the metering module, (2) comprises a seal as part of the check valve assembly simplifying seal inspection, seal removal and seal replacement; (3) is secured in its housing only external fasteners; and (4) comprises fluid hammer suppression and monitoring features.

Claims

1. A check valve module for controlling the flow of a fluid, said module comprising:

an enclosure comprising a valve-input and a valve-output suitably configured so that fluid flows into said valve-input, through said enclosure, and then out said valve-output;

wherein said enclosure is further suitably configured to receive a check valve assembly between said valve-input and said valve-output;

a check valve assembly disposed between said valve-input and said valve-output, said check valve assembly comprising a valve section and a stem section;

wherein said valve section comprises a flapper associated with a spring configured to open and allow fluid flow through the enclosure when the pressure exerted by the fluid on the valve-input side of the flapper equals or exceeds a predefined open value;

wherein said flapper is further configured to close and prevent fluid flow through the enclosure when the pressure exerted by the fluid on the valve-input side of the flapper is below a predefined close value;

a check valve plate configured to detachably associate with said enclosure using only external fasteners to the enclosure, wherein said stem section extends from said valve section, through said check valve plate and to a point outside the enclosure thereby defining a stem section distal end;

wherein said check valve assembly may be removed from said enclosure by removing said external fasteners; and

a fluid hammer suppressor associated with said check valve plate so that said fluid hammer suppressor is in fluid communication with said valve-output.

2. A check valve module for controlling the flow of a fluid as in claim 1, wherein said fluid hammer suppressor comprises:

a housing defining an internal void, said housing further defining a housing input at a first end and a plunger interface at a second end;

wherein said housing input is in fluid communication with the fluid at said valve-output;

a vent port defined by said housing;

a plunger assembly disposed at least partially within said internal void, said plunger assembly movably associated with said housing and configured to prevent fluid from flowing from said valve-output and through said vent port when the fluidic pressure at said housing input is below a predefined value; and

wherein said plunger assembly is configured to allow fluid flow from said valve-output and through said vent port when the fluidic pressure at the housing input reaches a predefined vent pressure.

3. A check valve module for controlling the flow of a fluid as in claim 2, wherein said plunger assembly comprises a magnetic component that moves within said housing as the fluidic pressure at the housing input changes.

4. A check valve module for controlling the flow of a fluid as in claim 3, wherein said housing further defines a magnetic interface adjacent to said magnetic component.

A check valve module for controlling the flow of a fluid as in claim 4, further comprising an electronic monitor comprising a processor electrically associated with a memory and further electrically associated with a plurality of magnetic sensors, said plurality of magnetic sensors defining an electronic monitor magnetic interface, said electronic monitor associated with said housing so that said electronic monitor magnetic interface is adjacent to said housing magnetic interface.

A check valve module for controlling the flow of a fluid as in claim 5, wherein each of said plurality of magnetic sensors are configured to generate a sensor-signal when the magnetic flux lines from said magnetic component impinge on the respective surface of each sensor and wherein said processor is configured to receive said sensor-signals and store a digital representation of such sensor-signals in a memory.

7. A check valve module for controlling the flow of a fluid as in claim 6, wherein said processor is an RF enable processor configured to transmit a data signal to a remote device upon the occurrence of at least one of:

(1) a sensor-signal is received, (2) a predefined amount of time has elapsed and (3) a data request from a remote device is received by said processor.

A check valve module for controlling the flow of a fluid as in claim 1, wherein said fluid hammer suppressor comprises a magnetic component configured to move when said fluid hammer suppressor is activated, said check valve module further comprising an electronic monitor magnetically associated with said fluid hammer suppressor, wherein said electronic monitor is configured for detecting magnetic component movement.

A check valve module for controlling the flow of a fluid as in claim 8, wherein said electronic monitor comprises an RF enabled processor electrically associated with an antenna, a memory and a power source, said RF enabled processor configured to transmit a data signal to a remote device when the fluid hammer suppressor is activated.

10. A check valve assembly for flow meters, comprising:

a valve housing defining a fluid-input and a fluid-output wherein said valve housing further defines a inter void between said fluid-input and said fluid-output;

a check-valve disposed within said inter void and configured to allow fluid flow through the valve housing when the fluidic pressure at the fluid-input reaches a predefined pressure value;

wherein said check-valve is further configured to prevent fluid flow through the valve housing when the fluidic pressure at the fluid-input is below a predefined pressure value;

a housing plate configured to secure said check-valve within said void using only external fasteners; and

a fluid hammer suppressor defining a suppressor-input, wherein said suppressor-input is associated with said check valve assembly so that fluid from said valve housing is in fluid communication with said suppressor-input thereby placing said fluid hammer suppressor in fluid communication with said valve housing.

11. A check valve assembly for flow meters as in claim 10, wherein said check-valve comprises:

a flapper and spring mechanically associated with said housing plate, said flapper comprising a flapper interface configured to mechanically associate with a housing interface defined between the fluid-input and fluid-output thereby providing a substantially fluid tight seal configured to prevent fluid flow through said valve housing when the fluidic pressure at the fluid-input is below a predefined pressure value;

wherein said flapper interface is configured to disassociate from said housing interface when the fluidic pressure at the fluid-input reaches a predefined pressure value thereby allowing fluid flow through the valve housing; and

wherein said flapper and spring are removed from the check valve assembly by removing said housing plate from the check valve assembly.

12. A check valve assembly for flow meters as in claim 10, wherein said check valve defines a check-valve-module comprising a flapper section and a stem section;

wherein the flapper section defines a flapper section interface configured to mechanically associate with a housing interface, said housing interface defined between said fluid-input and said fluid-output, thereby providing a substantially fluid tight seal configured to prevent fluid flow around said check valve that would otherwise bypass the flapper section;

wherein said flapper section comprises a flapper associated with a spring configured to place a biased force on the flapper to keep it closed and prevent fluid flow through said flapper section when the fluidic pressure at the fluid-input is below a predefined pressure value;

wherein said flapper is configured to open and allow fluid flow through the flapper section when the fluidic pressure at the fluid-input reaches a predefined pressure value;

wherein a first end of said stem section is one of (a) integral to said stem section, and (b) mechanically associated with said stem section, and wherein a second end of said stem section defines a distal-end;

wherein said stem section is configured to extend from said valve section and through said housing plate so that said distal-end is outside the check valve assembly; and

wherein said stem section provides a fluid path from the output side of the check-valve to said distal-end thereby placing said distal-end in fluid communication with the output of said check-valve.

13. ) A check valve assembly for flow meters as in claim 12, wherein said fluid hammer suppressor is mechanically associated with said distal-end.

14. ) A check valve assembly for flow meters as in claim 10, wherein said housing plate defines a fluid port in fluid communication with said fluid-output and where said fluid hammer suppressor is mechanically associated with said fluid port.

15. ) A check valve assembly for flow meters as in claim 14, wherein said housing plate defines an input-side-fluid-port in fluid communication with said fluid-input and where a fluid hammer suppressor is mechanically associated with said input-side-fluid-port.

A check valve assembly for flow meters as in claim 10, wherein said fluid hammer suppressor comprising a magnetic component that moves when the fluid hammer suppressor is activated, said check valve assembly further comprising an electronic monitor electrically associated with said fluid hammer suppressor, wherein said electronic monitor is configured with magnetic sensor configured for detecting magnetic component movement and further configured to generate a sensor-signal with magnetic component movement is detected.

17. A check valve module for controlling the flow of a fluid as in claim 16, wherein said electronic monitor comprises an RF enabled processor electrically associated with an antenna, a memory, at least one magnetic sensor, and a power source, said RF enabled processor configured to transmit a data signal to a remote device when at least one of (a) a sensor-signal is generated, (b) periodically at one of equal predefined intervals, unequal predefined intervals, random intervals.

18. A check valve module for controlling the flow of a fluid as in claim 17, wherein said electronic monitor comprises an RF enabled processor defines a receiver and wherein said RF enabled processor is configured to transmit a data signal upon receiving a RF signal from a remote device.

19. A method of providing water hammer protection to a fluid delivery system, said method comprising the steps of:

providing a fluid hammer suppressor comprising a housing defining an internal void, said housing further defining a housing input at a first end and a plunger interface at a second end, and wherein said housing further defines a vent port between said housing input and said plunger interface;

associating said housing input with said fluid delivery system so that said housing input is in fluid communication with the fluid in said fluid delivery system;

disposing a plunger assembly at least partially within said internal void so that said plunger assembly is movably associated with said housing;

configuring said plunger assembly to prevent fluid from flowing from said fluid delivery system and through said vent port when the fluidic pressure at said housing input is below a predefined value; and

configuring said plunger assembly to allow fluid flow from said housing input and through said vent port when the fluidic pressure at the housing input reaches a predefined vent pressure.

20. A method of providing water hammer protection to a fluid delivery system as in claim 19, wherein said plunger assembly comprises a first plate mechanically associated with a plunger rod and an energy absorber.
