Abstract

In one embodiment, determining a document specificity includes accessing a record that records the clusters of documents. The number of themes of a document is determined from the number of clusters of the document. The specificity of the document is determined from the number of themes.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

accessing a record stored in one or more tangible media, the record recording a plurality of clusters of a plurality of documents, a document comprising a plurality of words, a cluster comprising a plurality of satisfactorily affine words of the plurality of words, a cluster indicating a theme;

establishing a number of themes of each document of at least a subset of the plurality of documents; and

determining a specificity of the each document according to the number of themes by;

determining that the each document is more specific if the each document has a lower number of themes; and

determining that the each document is less specific if the each document has a higher number of themes.

2. The method of claim 1, the establishing the number of themes of the each document of at least the subset of the plurality of documents further comprising:

determining a number of clusters of the each document; and

calculating the number of themes of the each document from the number of clusters.

3. The method of claim 1, the establishing the number of themes of the each document of at least the subset of the plurality of documents further comprising:

identifying a depth with respect to which the number of themes is to be established; and

establishing the number of themes with respect to the identified depth.

4. The method of claim 1, the establishing the number of themes of the each document of at least the subset of the plurality of documents further comprising:

selecting a plurality of keywords from the each document;

identifying one or more candidate themes related to the keywords; and

if the one or more candidate themes match the document, establishing the one or more candidate themes as the themes of the document.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising performing a specificity analysis by:

receiving a search query comprising a document specificity request; and

retrieving one or more documents of the plurality of documents that satisfy the search query and the document specificity request.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising performing a specificity analysis by:

facilitating a graphical display of the specificity for the each document of the plurality of documents, the graphical display comprising an element selected from a set consisting of a graphical indicator, a graphical modification, and a graph.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising performing a specificity analysis by:

receiving a search query;

retrieving a set of documents that satisfy the search query; and

sorting the set of documents according to the specificities of the documents of the set of documents.

8. The method of claim 1:

the plurality of documents associated with one or more users; and

the determining the specificity of the each document according to the number of themes further comprising determining a user specificity of the one or more users from the plurality of documents.

9. The method of claim 1:

the plurality of documents associated with one or more users;

the determining the specificity of the each document according to the number of themes further comprising determining a user specificity of the one or more users from the plurality of documents; and

further comprising selecting one or more documents for the one or more users according to the user specificity.

10. The method of claim 1:

the plurality of documents associated with one or more users;

the determining the specificity of the each document according to the number of themes further comprising determining a user specificity of the one or more users from the plurality of documents; and

further comprising monitoring the user specificity of the one or more users.

11. The method of claim 1:

the plurality of documents associated with a corpus; and

the determining the specificity of the each document according to the number of themes further comprising determining a corpus specificity of the corpus from the plurality of documents.

19. The method of claim 1:

the plurality of documents associated with one or more users; and

the computer-readable tangible media further operable to determine the specificity of the each document according to the number of themes by determining a user specificity of the one or more users from the plurality of documents.

20. The method of claim 1:

the plurality of documents associated with one or more users; and

the computer-readable tangible media further operable to;

determine the specificity of the each document according to the number of themes by determining a user specificity of the one or more users from the plurality of documents; and

select one or more documents for the one or more users according to the user specificity.

21. The method of claim 1:

the plurality of documents associated with one or more users;

the computer-readable tangible media further operable to;

determine the specificity of the each document according to the number of themes by determining a user specificity of the one or more users from the plurality of documents; and

monitor the user specificity of the one or more users.

22. The method of claim 1:

the plurality of documents associated with a corpus; and

the computer-readable tangible media further operable to;

determine the specificity of the each document according to the number of themes by determining a corpus specificity of the corpus from the plurality of documents.

12. One or more computer-readable tangible media encoding software operable when executed to:

access a record stored in one or more tangible media, the record recording a plurality of clusters of a plurality of documents, a document comprising a plurality of words, a cluster comprising a plurality of satisfactorily affine words of the plurality of words, a cluster indicating a theme;

establish a number of themes of each document of at least a subset of the plurality of documents; and

determine a specificity of the each document according to the number of themes by;

determining that the each document is more specific if the each document has a lower number of themes; and

determining that the each document is less specific if the each document has a higher number of themes.

13. The computer-readable tangible media of claim 12, further operable to establish the number of themes of the each document of at least the subset of the plurality of documents by:

determining a number of clusters of the each document; and

calculating the number of themes of the each document from the number of clusters.

14. The computer-readable tangible media of claim 12, further operable to establish the number of themes of the each document of at least the subset of the plurality of documents by:

identifying a depth with respect to which the number of themes is to be established; and

establishing the number of themes with respect to the identified depth.

15. The computer-readable tangible media of claim 12, further operable to establish the number of themes of the each document of at least the subset of the plurality of documents by:

selecting a plurality of keywords from the each document;

identifying one or more candidate themes related to the keywords; and

if the one or more candidate themes match the document, establishing the one or more candidate themes as the themes of the document.

16. The computer-readable tangible media of claim 12, further operable to perform a specificity analysis by:

receiving a search query comprising a document specificity request; and

retrieving one or more documents of the plurality of documents that satisfy the search query and the document specificity request.

17. The computer-readable tangible media of claim 12, further operable to perform a specificity analysis by:

facilitating a graphical display of the specificity for the each document of the plurality of documents, the graphical display comprising an element selected from a set consisting of a graphical indicator, a graphical modification, and a graph.

18. The computer-readable tangible media of claim 12, further operable to perform a specificity analysis by:

receiving a search query;

retrieving a set of documents that satisfy the search query; and

sorting the set of documents according to the specificities of the documents of the set of documents.
