Abstract

A method of operating a point of sale (POS) terminal includes inputting into the POS terminal information for defining a transaction. The method further includes selecting between a first mode of operation of the POS terminal and a second mode of operation of the POS terminal. In the first mode of operation the POS terminal initiates a payment card authorization request to an acquirer financial institution. In the second mode of operation the POS terminal transmits transaction information to a customer'"'"'s mobile device.

Claims

1. A method of operating a point of sale (POS) terminal, the method comprising:

inputting into the POS terminal information for defining a transaction; and

selecting between a first mode of operation of the POS terminal and a second mode of operation of the POS terminal, wherein the POS terminal initiates a payment card authorization request to an acquirer financial institution in said first mode of operation, and the POS terminal transmits transaction information to a customer'"'"'s mobile device in said second mode of operation.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said transaction information transmitted in said second mode includes information that identifies a merchant that operates the POS terminal.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said transaction information transmitted in said second mode includes information that identifies the POS terminal.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the POS terminal selects said second mode in response to a signal received from said mobile device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the POS terminal selects said second mode in response to an operator'"'"'s use of an input device included in the POS terminal.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the POS terminal receives a payment card account number from the mobile device in said first mode of operation, and said second mode of operation does not include receiving a payment card account number.

7. A method of operating a point of sale (POS) terminal, the method comprising:

inputting into the POS terminal information for defining a transaction; and

selecting between a first mode of operation of the POS terminal and a second mode of operation of the POS terminal, wherein the POS terminal initiates a payment card authorization request to an acquirer financial institution in said first mode of operation, and the POS terminal transmits transaction information to a service provider in said second mode of operation, said service provider not being an acquirer financial institution.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein said transaction information transmitted in said second mode is not part of an authorization request.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein said transaction information transmitted in said second mode does not include a payment card account number.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein said POS terminal does not receive a payment card account number in said second mode of operation, and does receive a payment card account number in said first mode of operation.

11. The method of claim 7, wherein the POS terminal selects said second mode in response to an operator'"'"'s use of an input device included in the POS terminal.

12. The method of claim 7, wherein the POS terminal selects said second mode in response to a signal received from a customer'"'"'s mobile device.

13. A point of sale (POS) terminal comprising:

a processor;

a first input device coupled to the processor and operative to input product information to the processor;

a communication device coupled to the processor and operative to communicate with a customer'"'"'s mobile device; and

a second input device coupled to the processor for signaling the processor to switch the POS terminal over from a first mode of operation to a second mode of operation, wherein;

(a) in said first mode of operation, said POS terminal reads a payment card account number from a payment device and initiates a payment card authorization request to an acquirer financial institution; and

(b) in said second mode of operation, said POS terminal transmits transaction information to the customer'"'"'s mobile device and receives a confirmation of a funds transfer initiated from the customer'"'"'s mobile device.

14. The POS terminal of claim 13, wherein the communication device is a first communication device, and further comprising:

a second communication device coupled to the processor and different from the first communication device, said confirmation being received via said second communication device.

15. The POS terminal of claim 14, wherein said first communication device receives near field communications (NFC).

16. The POS terminal of claim 13, further comprising:

a display coupled to said processor for displaying transaction information.

17. The POS terminal of claim 13, further comprising:

a magnetic stripe card reader coupled to said processor.

18. A method of operating a point of sale (POS) terminal, the method comprising:

inputting into the POS terminal information for defining a first transaction;

reading, from a payment device, a payment card account number;

using the payment card account number to initiate a payment card authorization request to an acquirer financial institution with respect to the first transaction;

receiving an authorization response with respect to the first transaction;

inputting into the POS terminal information for defining a second transaction; and

receiving with respect to the second transaction a confirmation of a payment transaction initiated by a customer for transferring funds into a payment card account issued to a merchant who operates the POS terminal.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

before receiving the confirmation, transmitting to a customer'"'"'s mobile device information concerning the second transaction.

20. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

before receiving the confirmation, transmitting to a payment services provider information concerning the second transaction.
