Abstract

A mobile phone device configured for overlaying part of a substrate. The substrate contains a printed hyperlink and coded data identifying a plurality of positions on the substrate. The device includes: a mobile telephone transceiver; an optical sensor for reading the coded data; a processor for generating interaction data using the read coded data; a wireless transceiver or memory for retrieval of display data corresponding to the part of the substrate overlain by the device; and a touch-sensitive display screen for displaying information based on the display data. The displayed information includes a displayed hyperlink corresponding to the printed hyperlink. User interaction with the displayed hyperlink via the touch-sensitive display screen causes display of hyperlinked information on the screen.

Claims

1. A mobile phone device configured for overlaying at least part of a substrate, said part of said substrate containing a printed hyperlink and coded data identifying a region identity and one or more positions on the substrate, said device comprising:

a mobile telephone transceiver;

an optical sensor for reading at least some of the coded data;

a processor for generating interaction data using the read coded data, said interaction data identifying the region identity and a position of the device relative to the substrate;

means for retrieval of display data corresponding to the part of the substrate overlain by the device; and

a touch-sensitive display screen for displaying display information based on said display data, said display information including a displayed hyperlink corresponding to the printed hyperlink,

wherein user interaction with the displayed hyperlink via said touch-sensitive display screen causes retrieval and display of hyperlinked information on said screen.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein said means for retrieval of display data comprises:

means for communicating said region identity to a server via a wireless network;

means for receiving a page description corresponding to said region identity; and

means for identifying said display data using the position of the device and the page description.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein said means for retrieval of display data comprises:

means for communicating the interaction data to a server via a wireless network; and

means for receiving said display data based on said interaction data.

4. The device of claim 3 wherein said means for retrieval of display data further comprises:

means for receiving a page description corresponding to said region identity.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein said means for retrieval of display data comprises said mobile phone transceiver.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein said means for retrieval of display data comprises a memory in said device, said memory storing a page description corresponding to said substrate.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein said display information is the same as underlying printed information.

8. The device of claim 1 further comprising means for displaying zoomed-in information or zoomed-out information.

9. The device of claim 1 further comprising a stylus for interacting with the touch-sensitive display screen.

10. The device of claim 1 further comprising an accelerometer for detecting movement of the device.

11. The device of claim 1, further comprising means for snapping said display information, wherein snapped display information is displayed irrespective of a position of said device relative to said substrate.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein a snapped displayed hyperlink remains interactive via said touch-sensitive display screen irrespective of the position of said device relative to said substrate.

13. The device of claim 12 further comprising means for navigation of a display page via said snapped display information, said display page corresponding to the printed substrate.

16. The device of claim 1, wherein said device comprises a power management system for powering down said display screen during periods of inactivity.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein said power management system is coupled with at least one input sensor for initiating powering up of said device, said input sensor being selected from the group consisting of:

said touch-sensitive display screen, said optical sensor and an accelerometer.

18. The device of claim 1 further comprising a printer for printing onto said substrate.

19. The device of claim 18, wherein said printer is configured to print onto said substrate when said device is stationary.

14. The device of claim 14, wherein said means for navigation of said display page enables panning across said display page.

15. The method of claim 15, wherein said means for navigation of said display page comprises said touch-sensitive screen responsive to a panning interaction.
