Abstract

A method and apparatus for reducing the longitudinal aspect of the catheter to stent force having at least one grip member for use with a stent delivery system. The grip engages a stent in the unexpanded state prior to delivery of the stent by retracting a stent retaining sheath. The grip has a body region having an outer diameter, a first end and a second end. The outer diameter of the first end is greater than the outer diameter of the second end. The grip is at least partially constructed from a polymeric material.

Claims

1. A stent delivery device, comprising:

an elongate shaft;

a grip member disposed on the shaft, the grip member including a proximal hub portion and a distal portion;

wherein the proximal hub portion has a first outer diameter, wherein the distal portion has a second outer diameter, and wherein the first outer diameter is greater than the second outer diameter;

a stent disposed over the grip member; and

a tubular sheath disposed over the stent.

2. The stent delivery device of claim 1, wherein the stent is positioned adjacent the proximal hub portion.

3. The stent delivery device of claim 1, wherein the stent is butted against the proximal hub portion.

4. The stent delivery device of claim 1, further comprising a second grip member.

5. The stent delivery device of claim 4, wherein the stent is disposed on at least a portion of the second grip member.

6. The stent delivery device of claim 4, wherein a gap is formed between the grip member and the second grip member, and wherein at least a portion of the stent is disposed along the gap.

7. The stent delivery device of claim 4, wherein the second grip member includes a distal hub portion and a proximal portion.

8. The stent delivery device of claim 7, wherein the distal hub portion of the second grip member has a third outer diameter, wherein the proximal portion of the second grip member has a fourth outer diameter, and wherein the third outer diameter is greater than the fourth outer diameter

9. The stent delivery device of claim 1, wherein the grip member includes a polymer.

10. The stent delivery device of claim 1, wherein the grip member includes a radiopaque material.

11. A stent delivery device, comprising:

an inner member;

a grip disposed on the inner member, the grip including a proximal hub and a tapered body extending distally from the hub;

a stent disposed over at least a portion of the grip; and

a tubular sheath disposed over the stent.

12. The stent delivery device of claim 11, wherein the stent is butted against the hub.

13. The stent delivery device of claim 12, wherein the stent extends distally from the hub.

14. The stent delivery device of claim 11, further comprising one or more additional grips.

15. The stent delivery device of claim 11, further comprising a second grip including a second hub and a tapered body extending from the second hub.

16. The stent delivery device of claim 15, wherein the stent is disposed on at least a portion of the second grip.

17. The stent delivery device of claim 15, wherein a gap is formed between the grip and the second grip, and wherein at least a portion of the stent is disposed along the gap.

18. A stent delivery device, comprising:

a catheter including an inner shaft and a sheath, the sheath being proximally retractable relative to the inner shaft;

a stent disposed within the sheath, the stent including a plurality of individual struts; and

a grip disposed on the inner shaft and under at least a portion of the stent, the grip including a proximal hub a tapered body extending distally from the hub;

wherein the catheter exerts a longitudinal force on the stent when the sheath is retracted and the grip reduces the longitudinal force the catheter exerts on the individual struts.

19. The stent deliver device of claim 18, wherein the grip reduces the longitudinal force the catheter exerts on the individual struts by reducing the angle between the individual struts of the stent and the inner shaft when the sheath is retraced and the stent emerges from the sheath.

20. The stent delivery device of claim 18, further comprising one or more additional grips.
