Abstract

This invention relates to the creation of a software application to: facilitate the creation, representation and publication of digital objects; in particular, methods and apparatus that improve digital resource retrieval on the part of end users and to provide a new system for the web based marketing of digital assets and the online distribution of metadata enriched advertising.

Claims

1. A method, in a data processing system, for creating at least one complex digital object utilizing at least one poly-hierarchical and multi-schema cataloging system that facilitates the qualified description of the at least one digital object from multiple points of view (“

POV”

), said method comprises;

a method to catalog;

a method to author;

a method to publish;

2. the method to catalog of claim 1 comprises:

a method to manage at least one metadata schema template;

a method for POV management;

a method to manage at least one digital object based its poly-hierarchical description;

3. the method to manage at least one metadata schema template of claim 2 manages at least one metadata schema template and its associated workflow;

4. the at least one metadata schema template of claim 3 is validated prior to being used by the inventive system;

5. modification of the at least one metadata schema template of claim 3 generates a new version of the at least one metadata schema template;

6. the new version of the at least one metadata schema template in claim 5 can be substituted for a published metadata schema template after a revision and validation process;

7. the method for POV management of claim 2 manages at least one POV;

8. the at least one POV of claim 7 comprises at least one metadata schema template;

9. the method for POV management of claim 2, where the method for POV management permits the creation of at least one POV;

10. the at least one POV of claim 8 can be a POV definition, POV ontology, POV construction, POV instance, Phylogenic POV or combination thereof;

11. when authorities such as domain ontology, thesaurus or controlled vocabularies, among others are available, the authorities are used as controlled input fields to annotate the at least one POV of claim 8;

12. when authorities are not available, a descriptive field is used to annotate the at least one POV of claim 8;

13. the method for POV management of claim 2 comprises:

a method to align at least two POVs;

a method to mediate at least two POVs; and

a method to map at least two POVs;

14. the method to map at least two POVs of claim 13 comprises linking ontologies in an hierarchical structure;

15. the method to manage at least one digital object of claim 2 comprises:

a method to ingest at least one digital object;

a method to create a history and version of said at least one digital object;

a method to store the said history and version and said at least one digital object in at least one repository;

at least one method to search said at least one repository using at least one metadata filter, for said at least one digital object;

at least one method to search, using at least one topic map, at least one said repository;

at least one method to semantically search said at least one repository;

16. the method to ingest at least one digital object of claim 15 comprises:

a method to authenticate the user of the inventive system;

a method to determine the community and collection into which the at least one object will be cataloged prior to entering said at least one repository of claim 15;

a method to attach administrative metadata, such as, user, collection and community to which the said at least one digital object belongs, among others, to said at least one digital object;

a method to determine the type of said at least one object to be cataloged;

a method to identify at least one POV to be used;

a method to identify the at least one appropriate metadata schema template for content;

a means input data into at least one appropriate metadata schema template;

a method to verify incongruities or duplications of objects on at least one known metadata schema template;

a method to verify versions of the at least one ingested digital object a method to approve ingestion of at least one digital object;

17. the method to ingest at least one digital object of claim 15 comprises:

a method to turn at least one ingested digital asset into an autonomous XML document, said XML document hold content identifiers;

naming said XML document a digital item declaration (DID), said DID will contain and/or reference all related data streams;

said DID can be a DID identifier, content identifier, or a combination thereof;

18. the content identifier of claim 17 is directly related to at least one identifier that is natively attached to a digital object before its ingestion;

19. the at least one digital object of claim 17 is stored in at least one semantic repository;

20. at least one semantic repository of claim 19 is dedicated to at least one digital object user said at least one semantic repository is date/time stamped when created or when updated;

21. a method to track the creation and location of the at least one semantic repository of claim 20;

at least one user interface that allows at least one user to search for at least one digital or complex digital object stored in the at least one semantic repository of claim 19 utilizing at least one semantic metadata format filter, delivering the requested said at least one digital or complex digital object to said user, said portal can be the World Wide Web, cellular connection, among others;

a means to review, analyze, and gather information regarding said user and the requested at least one digital or complex digital object;

a method to edit said at least one semantic metadata filter for said user'"'"'s search behavior;

using the inventive method of claim 1 to modify metadata attached to the said at least one digital or complex digital object requested by said user to reflect said user'"'"'s search behavior;

29. the means to review, analyze, and gather information regarding said user and the requested at least one digital or complex digital object of claim 28 comprises:

statistical analysis of said user'"'"'s navigation and a study of the metadata for the requested at least one digital or complex digital object in distinct phases;

an evaluation of said user'"'"'s success in finding requested at least one digital or complex digital object;

30. at least one semantic metadata format filter of claim 28 provides stratified management for metadata publication, said at least one semantic metadata format filter allows differentiated metadata publication for a distribution channel such as a portal page, the World Wide Web, cellular, or federated institutional repositories, among others;

31. the portal page of claim 30 can be a home page, product page, gallery page, magazine page, album page, search page, or single image, among others;

32. at least one semantic metadata format filter of claim 28 comprises:

a first level filter, said first level filter comprises channel filter, said channel filter is applied to all objects published on the channel;

a POV second level filter, said POV second level filter comprises a POV filter, said POV filter is applied to all objects published on the channel with a specific point of view cataloged;

33. the at least one semantic metadata format filter of claim 28 defines the portal page of claim 31;

34. at least one semantic metadata format filter of claim 32 further comprises:

a product category second level filter, said product category second level filter permits filtering of at least one product category and is applied to all objects in the product category;

a third level filter, said third level filter comprises a user profile filter and defines a generic filter for all of the services associated with a user;
