Abstract

Method and system for reducing battery consumption during an active session wherein an access point (AP) transmits a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) a packet information regarding packets in a queue waiting for transmission to the WTRU and when the packets are to be decoded, whereby enabling the WTRU to enter or remain in an OFF mode in accordance with the packet information. The AP does not send the packets to the WTRU until the AP informs the WTRU about the packet.

Claims

1. A method for reducing battery consumption in a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), the method comprising:

receiving a queue of packets including a plurality of packets, an indication of the relative order of each of the plurality of packets, an indication of the number of packets, and a destination of each of the plurality of packets; and

entering into an OFF mode or AWAKE mode in accordance with the packet information.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the WTRU enters into the AWAKE mode only when a destination of each of the plurality of packets that there is a packet queued for transmission for the WTRU otherwise the WTRU enters into OFF mode.

3. The method of claim 1, transmitting an indication of further comprising:

commencement of a power of a power saving mode in response to a level of battery life falls below a predetermined threshold.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the queue of packets received is in a beacon frame.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the queue of packets is received in a packet header.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the WTRU enters an OFF mode after receiving the packets identified for receipt by the WTRU.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the WTRU sets a timer in accordance with the queue and enters an AWAKE mode when the timer expires.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the WTRU stays in the AWAKE mode to receive all the packets.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the WTRU withholds transmitting of packets during a time period identified for receiving packets.

10. A WTRU for saving battery life comprising:

a receiver configured to receive packets including a plurality of packets, an indication of the relative order of each of the plurality of packets, an indication of the number of packets, and a destination of each of the plurality of packets;

a processor configured to place a component of the WTRU into an OFF mode or an AWAKE mode in accordance with the queue of packets; and

a transmitter configured to transmit an indication that the WTRU will enter an OFF mode or an AWAKE mode in accordance with the queue of packets.

11. The WTRU of claim 10, wherein the queue of packets is received in a beacon frame.

12. The WTRU of claim 10, wherein the processor is further configured to place a component of the WTRU into an OFF mode in response to receiving the queue of packets, to set a timer in accordance with the queue of packets, and to enter an AWAKE mode in response to expiration of the timer.
