Abstract

A composition suitable for application as an ink, and a method of producing a composition for forming a porous oxide-based coating on a substrate including: 1) fabricating reactive nano particles; 2) fabricating active submicron powder with a reactive surface; and 3) mixing reactive powders with organic vehicle to form an ink. A viscosity of the ink can be adjusted by adding high boiling point solvents. An ink can be printed via a variety of printing processes to form a coating. Upon thermal cure an oxide-based compound coating is formed with adhesion to a substrate.

Claims

1. A composition comprising:

an organic vehicle; and

metal oxide particles mixed in the organic vehicle,

wherein the metal oxide particles have activated surfaces,

wherein the composition is suitable for printing, and

wherein the composition is capable of forming a porous coating at a temperature that is less than 400°

C.

2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is capable of forming a porous coating at a temperature that is less than 350°

C.

3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the metal oxide particles having the activated surfaces are capable of reacting with one another to form the porous coating at a temperature that is less than 400°

C.

4. The composition of claim 1, wherein the metal oxide particles having the activated surfaces are capable of reacting with one another to form the porous coating at a temperature that is not more than 350°

C.

5. The composition of claim 1, wherein the activated surfaces have been activated through a mechanochemical mixing process.

6. The composition of claim 1, wherein the activated surfaces comprise an alkoxide.

7. The composition of claim 6, wherein the activated surfaces comprise ethoxide.

8. The composition of claim 1, wherein the organic vehicle is capable of being burned off in air at a temperature less than 400°

C.

9. The composition of claim 8, wherein the organic vehicle is capable of being burned off in air at a temperature between 250°

C. and 350°

C.

10. The composition of claim 8, wherein the organic vehicle comprises one selected from polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose, and a derivative of cellulose.

11. The composition of claim 1, wherein the metal oxide particles comprise ruthenium oxide particles.

12. The composition of claim 1, further comprising at least one of a wax, a plasticizer, and a drier.

13. The composition of claim 1, wherein a viscosity of the composition ranges from 5,000 to 15,000 cp, wherein the composition is capable of forming a porous coating at a temperature of 350°

C., and wherein the organic vehicle is capable of being burned off in air at a temperature of 350°

C.

14. The composition of claim 1, further comprising metal hydroxide particles dispersed in the organic vehicle.

15. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition does not include metal hydroxide particles.

16. The composition of claim 1, wherein the metal oxide particles have sizes less than 1.5 microns.

17. A method comprising:

printing a composition on a surface, the composition including an organic vehicle and metal oxide particles having activated surfaces mixed in the organic vehicle; and

forming a porous coating on the surface by heating the composition to a temperature that is less than 400°

C.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein forming the porous coating comprises heating the composition to a temperature between 250°

C. and 350°

C.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein forming the porous coating comprises burning off the organic vehicle in air at the temperature that is less than 400°

C.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein said printing includes printing a composition including metal hydroxide particles having an average particle size that is less than 1.5 microns.

21. The method of claim 17, wherein said printing includes printing a composition including metal hydroxide particles mixed in the organic vehicle.

22. The method of claim 17, further comprising forming a capacitor including the porous coating.
