Abstract

Disclosed are compositions and methods related to eukaryotic microorganisms that can produce unsaturated fatty acids which can be purified and use.

Claims

1. A eukaryotic microorganism having an 18S sequence, wherein the 18S sequence has at least 94% identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:

2. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism produces unsaturated fatty acids having a profile shown in FIG. 2.

3. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism is from the phylum Labyrinthulomycota.

4. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism is from the class Labyrinthulomycetes.

5. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism is from the subclass Thraustochytridae.

6. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism is from the order Thraustochytriales.

7. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism is from the family Thraustochytriaceae.

8. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism is from the genus Thraustochytrium.

9. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism is Thraustochytrium sp.

10. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism is Thraustochytrium aureum.

11. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism is Thraustochytrium roseum.

12. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism is Thraustochytrium striatum.

13. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism is from the genus Schizochytrium.

14. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism is Schizochytrium sp.

15. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism comprises an omega 3 or omega 6 fatty acid.

16. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism comprises DHA or DPA.

17. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism produces a lipid or fatty acid fraction of at least about 25 wt. % to 90 wt. %.

18. The microorganism of claim 17, wherein the lipid comprises DHA.

19. The microorganism of claim 17, wherein the lipid composition comprises from about 15 wt. % fatty acid fraction to about 45 wt. % fatty acid fraction of n-3 DHA, from about 6 wt. % fatty acid fraction to about 15 wt. % fatty acid fraction of n-6 DPA, from about 0 wt. % fatty acid fraction to about 4 wt. % fatty acid fraction of n-3 DPA and from about 0 wt. % fatty acid fraction to about 8 wt. % fatty acid fraction of n-3 EPA.

20. The microorganism of claim 1, wherein the microorganism is from the family Thraustochytriaceae and has ATCC accession number PTA-6245.

46. A method of preparing a lipid composition, the method comprising:

culturing the eukaryotic microorganism of claim 1, in a heterotrophic medium, and isolating the lipid composition.

47. The lipid composition prepared according to the method of claim 46.

48. A delivery device comprising a composition of any of claim 47.

50. A microcapsule, comprising an agglomeration of primary microcapsules and a loading substance, each individual primary microcapsule having a primary shell, wherein the loading substance comprises the composition of claim 47, and is encapsulated by the primary shell, and wherein the agglomeration is encapsulated by an outer shell.

69. A nutritional supplement comprising the composition of claim 47.

71. A foodstuff comprising the composition of claim 47.

100. A pharmaceutical formulation comprising the composition of claim 47.

21. A composition comprising a eukaryotic microorganism having an 18S sequence, wherein the 18S sequence has at least 94% identity to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:

43. The composition of claim 21, wherein the eukaryotic microorganism is from the family Thraustochytriaceae and has ATCC accession number PTA-6245.

88. A foodstuff comprising the composition of claim 21.

101. A nutritional supplement comprising the composition of claim 21.
