Abstract

A method and network controller (200) with a radio network controller (206) that transmits (302) a first signaling message to a communication device (108). The first signaling message includes extended information that some communications devices (108) are expected to be unable to process. The radio network controller (206) further transmits (312) a second signaling message that includes substantially all information that is contained within the first signaling message except for the extended information. The method and network controller (200) also includes a signaling message retransmission controller (208) communicatively coupled to the network controller, that identifies information contained within the extended information and indicates the extended information to the radio network controller (206).

Claims

1. A method for managing message transmission in a wireless communications network, the method comprising:

transmitting a first signaling message to a mobile device, the first signaling message comprising extended information;

determining whether receipt and processing of the first signaling message has been successfully acknowledged; and

when receipt and processing of the first signaling message has not been successfully acknowledged, transmitting a second signaling message that comprises substantially all information contained within the first signaling message except for the extended information.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the extended information comprises country specific information that is transmitted within messages conforming to a wireless communications protocol in fewer than all countries.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein when receipt and full processing of the first signaling message has not been successfully acknowledged, the method further comprises:

receiving a response from the communication device indicating that the communication device rejected the first signaling message; and

determining whether the response comprises an indicator of a record in the first signaling message that caused the rejection.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein when the response comprises an indicator of a record in the first signaling message that caused the rejection, the method further comprises creating a second signaling message with the record indicated in the response removed.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein when the response does not comprise an indicator of a record in the first signaling message that caused the rejection, the method further comprises creating a second signaling message with a record predefined to cause compatibility problems removed.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein when receipt and full processing of the first signaling message has not been successfully acknowledged, the method further comprises:

determining that a response from the communication device has not been received; and

creating a second signaling message with a record predefined to cause compatibility problems removed.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first signaling message complies with an IS-2000 protocol definition and wherein the extended information comprises data contained within an Extended Record Type-international information record.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the first signaling message complies with an IS-2000 protocol definition and is an Alert with Information message containing the extended information in an Extended Record Type-international information record;

and

wherein the second signaling message comprises one of a flash message and a flash with information message, the one of the flash message and the flash with information message having the information Extended Record Type-International information record removed.

9. A wireless network controller, comprising:

a radio network controller adapted to;

transmit a first signaling message to a mobile device, the first signaling message comprising extended information

determine whether receipt and full processing of the first signaling message has been successfully acknowledged; and

when receipt and processing of the first signaling message has not been successfully acknowledged, transmit a second signaling message that comprises substantially all information contained within the first signaling message except for the extended information; and

a signaling message retransmission controller communicatively coupled to the radio network controller, adapted to identify information that is contained within the extended information and indicate the extended information to the radio network controller.

10. The wireless network controller of claim 9, wherein the extended information comprises country specific information that is transmitted within messages conforming to a wireless communications protocol in fewer than all countries.

The wireless network controller of claim 9, wherein when receipt and processing of the first signaling message has not been successfully acknowledged, the signaling message retransmission controller is adapted to receive a message failure indicator from the radio network controller indicating that the communication device rejected the first signaling message;

and

determine whether the message failure indicator specifies a record in the first signaling message that caused the rejection.

12. The wireless network controller of claim 11, wherein when the message failure indicator specifies a record in the first signaling message that caused the rejection,

the signaling message retransmission controller is adapted to send a signaling message modification command to the radio network controller, the signaling message modification command comprising the record in the first signaling message that caused the rejection;

and

the radio network controller is adapted to create a second signaling message with the record indicated in the signaling message modification command removed.

13. The wireless network controller of claim 11 wherein when the message failure indicator does not specify a record in the first signaling message that caused the rejection,

the signaling message retransmission controller is adapted to send a signaling message modification command to the radio network controller, the signaling message modification command comprising a record predefined to cause compatibility problems;

and

the radio network controller is adapted to create a second signaling message with the predefined record removed.

The wireless network controller of claim 9 wherein when receipt and full processing of the first signaling message has not been successfully acknowledged, the signaling message retransmission controller is adapted to send a signaling message modification command to the radio network controller, the signaling message modification command comprising a record predefined to cause compatibility problems when the message failure indicator comprises a message acknowledgement timeout;

and wherein the radio network controller creates the second signaling message so as to exclude the record predefined to cause compatibility problems.

15. The wireless network controller of claim 9, wherein the first signaling message complies with an IS-2000 protocol definition and wherein the extended information comprises data contained within an Extended Record Type-international information record.

16. The wireless network controller of claim 9, wherein the first signaling message complies with an IS-2000 protocol definition and is an Alert with Information message containing the extended information in an Extended Record Type-International information record, and

wherein the second signaling message comprises one of a flash message and a flash with information message, the one of the flash message and the flash with information message having the information Extended Record Type-International information record removed.

17. A wireless network controller, comprising:

a radio network controller adapted to;

transmit, to a mobile device, a first alert with information message containing an extended record type-international information record as defined by an IS-2000 protocol definition; and

transmit a second alert with information message with information contained within the extended record type-international information record removed; and

a signaling message retransmission controller, communicatively coupled to the radio network controller, adapted to identify a rejection of the alert with information message by the mobile device.

The wireless network controller of claim 17, wherein the signaling message retransmission controller determines the rejection by receiving an MS reject message from the mobile device, wherein the MS reject message comprises an indicator of extended record type-international information record as a cause of the rejection.
