Abstract

The invention provides methods and systems for evaluating a fluid transfer event between a parenteral fluid delivery and a patient. The evaluation of the fluid transfer event can be prospective real-time and/or historic, as desired, and take a variety of different formats.

Claims

41. A system comprising:

(a) a parenteral fluid delivery device; and

(b) a patient associated identifier configured to be associated with a patient;

wherein the system is configured to;

transmit a fluid transfer signal between the parenteral fluid transfer device and the patient associated identifier using the patient'"'"'s body as a signal conduction medium following establishment of a fluid transfer connection between the parenteral fluid delivery device and the patient; and

detect the transmitted fluid transfer signal to evaluate the fluid transfer event.

The system according to claim 41, wherein the parenteral fluid delivery device comprises a broadcasting element for transmitting a fluid transfer signal to the patient associated identifier and the patient associated identifier comprises a receiver element for receiving a fluid transfer signal from the parenteral fluid delivery device.

The system according to claim 41, wherein the patient associated identifier comprises a broadcasting element for transmitting a fluid transfer signal to the parenteral fluid delivery device and the parenteral fluid delivery device comprises a receiver element for receiving a fluid transfer signal from the patient associated identifier.

44. The system according to claim 41, wherein each of the parenteral fluid delivery device and the patient associated identifier comprise both a broadcaster element for transmitting a fluid transfer signal and a receiver element for receiving a transmitted fluid transfer signal.

45. The system according to claim 41, wherein the system is configured to conductively transmit the fluid transfer signal between the parenteral fluid delivery device and the patient associated identifier using the patient as a conductive medium.

46. The system according to claim 45, wherein the system is further configured to non-conductively communicate between the patient associated identifier and the parenteral fluid delivery device.

47. The system according to claim 41, wherein the system further comprises an external processing system.

48. The system according to claim 47, wherein the external processing system is a hospital information system.

49. The system according to claim 47, wherein the external processing system is a home health care information system.

50. The system according to claim 41, wherein the parenteral fluid delivery device is configured to transfer a liquid to said patient.

51. The system according to claim 50, wherein the parenteral fluid delivery device comprises a syringe.

52. The system according to claim 50, wherein the parenteral fluid delivery device comprises an intravenous administration device.

53. The system according to claim 52, wherein the intravenous administration device comprises a fluid delivery pump.

54. The system according to claim 52, wherein the intravenous administration device comprises a fluid containment bag.

55. The system according to claim 52, wherein the intravenous administration device comprises a drip bag.

56. The system according to claim 50, wherein the parenteral fluid delivery device is further configured to transfer liquid from the patient.

57. The system according to claim 56, wherein the parenteral fluid delivery device comprises a dialysis machine.

58. The system according to claim 41, wherein the parenteral fluid delivery device is configured to transfer a gas to the patient.

59. The system according to claim 58, wherein the parenteral fluid delivery device comprises an inhaler.

60. The system according to claim 41, wherein the parenteral fluid delivery device comprises at least two distinct components.

61. The system according to claim 60, wherein each of the at least two distinct components comprises a communication element, wherein the communication element is configured to perform at least one of:

broadcasting a signal and receiving a signal.

62. The system according to claim 41, wherein the patient associated identifier is configured to be implanted in the patient.

63. The system according to claim 41, wherein the patient associated identifier is configured to be topically positioned on the patient.

64. The system according to claim 41, wherein the system is configured to detect an error in a fluid transfer event.

65. The system according to claim 64, wherein the system is configured to prospectively detect an error in a future fluid transfer event.

66. The system according to claim 64, wherein the system is configured to detect an error in a fluid transfer event.

67. The system according to claim 64, wherein the system is configured to retrospectively detect an error in a fluid transfer event.

68. The system according to claim 64, wherein the system is configured to provide an error signal upon detection of an error in a fluid transfer event.

69. The system according to claim 41, wherein the system is configured to prospectively evaluate the fluid transfer event.

70. The system according to claim 69, wherein the system is configured to determine whether a functional fluid communication has been established between the parenteral fluid delivery device and the patient.

71. The system according to claim 70, wherein the system is configured to confirm that a future fluid transfer event has been prescribed for the patient.

72. The system according to claim 71, wherein the system is configured to activate the fluid delivery device to perform the fluid transfer event only after the system has confirmed that the fluid transfer event has been prescribed for the patient.

84. A system comprising:

(a) a patient associated identifier configured to be associated with a patient; and

(b) a communication element configured to be associated with a parenteral fluid delivery device, wherein the communication element is configured to perform at least one of;

broadcasting a fluid transfer event signal to the patient associated identifier and receiving a fluid transfer event signal from the patient associated identifier signal using the patient'"'"'s body as a signal conduction medium.

85. The system according to claim 84, wherein the system further comprises a parenteral fluid delivery device.
